Stephin Merritt – Obscurities

Stephin Merritt – Obscurities For an artist with so many projects and musical outlets (and lets face it, Stephin Merritt has been fantastically prolific over the years) an obscurities package presents more than your usual stop gap between albums. Rather it serves as a primer for things you might have missed, things that first saw the light of day as 7” b-sides, location specific bonus tracks or alternative takes on subsequently released songs. Obscurities also includes five unreleased tunes from projects that haven't quite come to fruition (three songs here are from the sci-fi musical 'The [...]

Stephin Merritt, Amanda Palmer, Neil Gaiman cover “Science Fiction, Double Feature”

5. Science Fiction / Double Feature 2011.10.31 - Craig Ferguson [HD]
As great as the live action Rocky Horror Picture Show performance I saw on Monday was (more on that later), this one takes the cake. Stephin Merritt, Amanda Palmer, Neil Gaiman and Moby teamed up to tackle the opening track from Rocky Horror on Craig Ferguson's Halloween show.

Amanda Palmer, Stephin Merritt, Moby & Neil Gaiman Cover Rocky Horror On Ferguson

5. Science Fiction / Double Feature 2011.10.31 - Craig Ferguson [HD]
The song is Rocky Horror Picture Show classic "Science Fiction/Double Feature," and the lineup is Coraline crew Stephin Merritt and Neil Gaiman, backing up the latter's wife along with Moby, because Moby is everywhere. In conceptual terms, at the very least, this is a sheer Halloween delight. And it is fair to say that this quartet dines out on "conceptual terms." Enjoy this: Read More...

Stephin Merritt, Amanda Palmer: “Science Fiction/Double... Stephin Merritt, Amanda Palmer: “Science Fiction/Double Feature” In which Amanda Palmer takes a few friends (and her husband, Neil Gaiman) to the Late Late (Rocky Horror Picture) Show for a Halloween version of said cult classic’s opening number, “Science Fiction/Double Feature.” Watch above (via WLFY ) as the Magnetic Fields’ Stephin Merritt strums a ukulele and duets with Palmer while Moby provides acoustic guitar and backing vocals.

Watch: Amanda Palmer, Stephin Merritt and Moby – “Science Fiction/Double Feature” (live on Craig Ferguson)

Last night Craig Ferguson had some very special musical guests on his Late Late Show to help celebrate Halloween. Former Dresden Dolls singer Amanda Palmer led a band which included Moby and The Magnetic Fields' Stephin Merritt (and her husband Neil Gaiman) in a cover of the song "Science Fiction/Double Feature" from the movie The Rocky Horror Picture Show . It's a pretty marvelous performance not only for the crowd cheering every chorus, but for Merritt's uniquely curmudgeon-like attire. Check it out below. [via [...]

Amanda Palmer and Stephin Merritt Cover The Rocky Horror Picture Show

Amanda Palmer and Stephin Merritt Cover The Rocky Horror Picture Show The best part of my Halloween was flipping through the channels late last night and landing on Craig Ferguson right as magic was about to happen. My eyes first caught Moby, what's Moby doing with acoustic guitar? Then Amanda Palmer and over to my hero Stephin Merritt. They were also joined by Palmer's husband and writer Neil Gaiman to cover "Science Fiction/Double Feature" from the cult film The Rocky Horror Picture Show . The combination is bizarre but the result is everything I could ever want from a Halloween performance.

Stephin Merritt Obscurities

Stephin Merritt Obscurities Stephin Merritt -Obscurities Nobody likes being taken for a sucker. And yet how often do we as music fans get unnecessarily excited when one of our favourite artists deigns to release that unholy trinity: previously unreleased tracks, alternate versions and rarities? Yep, we're suckers alright. But this is Stephin Merritt so it'll all be fine, won't it? On his day, the Magnetic Fields et al's front man is quite possibly the greatest songwriter alive [...]

Stephin Merritt – Obscurities

Stephin Merritt – Obscurities Stephin Merritt - Obscurities By Lucy Dearlove Stephin Merritt 's musical output has always sounded a bit like the product of a parallel New York City universe; he sings about the Chelsea Hotel, but it's in Manhattan where tangles of tiny guitars, Casio keyboards and bittersweet sad pop songs rattle down the streets and avenues like tumbleweed. While his later-recorded classic Magnetic Fields release 69 Love Songs was largely tight and precise production-wise, this collection of previously unreleased and side project material is full of barely [...]

Audio Archaeology: The Music of The Adventures of Pete & Pete

peteandpete
Sometimes, nostalgia turns out to be a very good thing. A long time ago, The Adventures of Pete & Pete was a totally awesome show. And after watching it again just this afternoon, it turns out it's still totally awesome and a lot deeper in the musically awesome department than we realized at age eight (and we're not just talking the theme music). When discussing the music of Pete & Pete , it all starts with Polaris. The wonderfully '90s theme song "Hey Sandy" was penned by Mark Mulcahy, originally the frontman for Miracle Legion [...]

[Review/Listen] – Stephin Merritt – “Obscurities”

[Review/Listen] – Stephin Merritt – “Obscurities” Tweet Buy the album: Amazon | iTunes | Merge Records Stephin Merritt's "Obscurities" is an elegant compilation of tracks strung together by Merritt's identifiable songwriting style and the recurrence of his gentle, forlorn baritone (referenced playfully in the album's opening track "Forever and a Day" , "You're my sine qua non/And I'm a baritone/Marry me"). The songs are unreleased recordings, re-recordings, and B-sides from his work under many monikers, and from as early [...]

Stephin Merritt: Dour & Dusty

Magnetic Fields songsmith Stephin Merritt rifles through his mind’s attic in compiling Obscurities. Stephin Merritt is nothing if not precise—in his speech, his painstaking approach to conceptually specific projects (including, most famously, the Magnetic Fields’ self-explanatory 1999 opus 69 Love Songs), and, especially, in his meticulously well-formed songcraft. Uncharacteristically, then, Obscurities, a new compilation issued [...]
