One thing I love about prog rock from the 1970s is that I know very little about it. All I do know is that it puts a smile on my face. My single most favorite thing about the genre is the weaving of so many entities into one musical extravaganza. Trace was a Dutch band created after a break up of Eskeption and formed by Rick van der Linden . On January 1, 1975 Trace released their second album Birds . One aspect of listening to this older music that I've never heard of [...]

photo by Jim Bennett It’s time again for Friday on My Mind the weekly blog post where we look at videos centered around one common theme. This is a collaborative effort between KEXP and King 5 News. This Saturday will mark the opening of the Worn to Be Wild exhibit at the EMP Museum. This exhibit pays tribute to the Black Leather Jacket and it’s place in pop culture and our history. In honor of this exhibit, this week we are looking at songs related to motorcycles and black leather jackets. [...]

It may not look like much in the photo, but this is the largest convenience store in the world. In most places around the country, gasoline prices are dipping. You know what that means - summer's here and the time is right for piling the kids and/or the dog into the car for a road trip. We were on the road this past week, and deep in the heart of the Lone Star state we wheeled in to a truly awe-inspiring site: the Buc-ee's truck stop/convenience store just north of New Braunfels, Texas, between [...]

Leave it to my expat brother Alexi, who has been living in Toronto since the end of the last century, to set me straight and send me a list of key mainstream Canadian artists that I left out of my previous post. Some of them I've never heard of (Angela Hewitt? Ben Heppner? Canadian Brass? jacksoul?), which sort of makes me wonder what I'm missing out on. Crash course time! Others I'm not terribly familiar with -- or in love with -- outside of a few singles or their glowing industry reps (Crash Test Dummies, Steppenwolf, Diana [...]
Music DVD Roundup: Some fine rock music DVDs have been released in the last few months. Included here are three of the best.

Here we go with another roundup of remixes, old and new, that I've been listening to over the past week or two. I am going to start with something off the Wugazi mashup album. It's rare for mashups to be any good at all, let alone comparable with the original songs. Yet somehow Cecil Otter and Swiss Andy have managed to pull this off. Picking one song off the album is a pretty much impossible task. So rather than simply listening to this one song, head over to www.wugazi.com , download [...]
Filed under: The Hit List Since we dropped our epic Best Opening Songs and Best Closing Songs in Film lists, we've had some very enthusiastic input from our readers, many beginning with a [...]

Filmed in the early part of 1968 and released in the summer of 1969, Easy Rider was a surprise box-office hit, pulling in over $19 million dollars (~111 million in 2010 dollars) in its initial run. Unafraid of stepping on the toes of conventionality, Dennis Hopper’s directorial debut certainly helped usher in a new approach to filmmaking. Much has been written about the film Easy Rider and its subsequent effect on Hollywood; however, little has been written on the film’s groundbreaking soundtrack. According to Hopper, Easy Rider [...]

Both Steppenwolf the band and Steppenwolf the book provided the thematic inspiration for this design. The book follows Harry Haller, a man searching for balance in a life full of extremes. His character embodies these extremes as he deals with questions of life and death, the spiritual and material, and what it means to be human. The story blurs the lines between reality and hallucinations as Haller seeks for stability in the battle between his uniquely human thoughts and his undeniable animal instincts. The band Steppenwolf also embodied these themes, balancing approachable radio hits with guttural rock [...]
Although most famous for "Born to be Wild," Steppenwolf recorded other groundbreaking songs, such as this underrated classic.
First half of the list is complete. Here are six more songs to enjoy. One of my Favorite Mixtapes by Eddy B & Tim Gunter is featured here as well as a track from Distant Relatives from Damian Marley and Na s. Rounded out the list are a dope Remix to Steppenwolf's classic , Rhymefest , Kickdrums Remix and an awesome fan submission in the Madison, RAC Remix . 26. Eddy B & Tim Gunter - "It's A Mad World" [...]

Saturday marks The Steam Co.'s dear friend Megan's GOLDEN BIRTHDAY. In honor of the occasion, Ms. Megan requested a dinner party mix - but we're going a bit further and will feature songs that have something to do with 27, November 1983, things that are gold or the birthday girl herself. Happy Birthday Meggie! "Souls of Gold - Sister Crayon" "The Pointer Sister - Jump (For My Love)" ( Break Out released November, 1983) "Billy Idol - Rebel Yell" [...]
