CLICK IMAGE TO VIEW VIDEO Very Insightful interview by GlitterFab L*Boogie: An Interview With Prince Paul- mastermind behind Stetsasonic, De La Soul, and much more. This interview was almost 8 months in making! Between delays, cancellations, rescheduling, work, weekends, and so forth- this interview finally took place on a hot day in June in Bryant Park- and of course on the worst day of allergies kicking my ass! Next to a huge lawn-full of people practicing group yoga, Prince Paul and I got to chat about a [...]

On May 19-20 , The Ohio State University will host a Hip Hop academic conference entitled, Hip-Hop Literacies: We All In The Same Game . There will be panels, workshops and performances. The conference is organized by Dr. Elaine Richardson aka Dr. E , professor of literacy studies in The College of Education and Human Ecology and author of Hip-Hop Literacies . I loved this track when I was growing up, and (like some of you probably) it's how I learned the names of various locales in Africa - Angola, Soweto, Zimbabwe, Tanzania, Zambia, Mozambique and Botswana. With South Africa having been liberated from Apartheid, this song may seem dated to some. But I still have mad love for the Stet and for this jam. I wish I could find my copy of the original mix, this one comes from Stetsasonic 's out-of-print album On Fire , but is remixed by Norman Cook. You know...Fatboy Slim? [...]

People are waking up today still angry at Lebron James , now probably the most hated man in all of pro sports. They're all shaking their heads, saying to themselves, "Lebron, why in the F**K did you pick Miami?" Some people say it's to complete a dream team . Others say it's because that's where people with money go . Me? I don't know why he'd leave Cleveland. The only logical explanation in my mind is that he took notes from Stetsasonic and said to himself: New York [...]

After the rousing success of last week's OSM (according to me anyway), I decided to keep the tape-fueled fun going with a part 2. To recap, last week I found a mix tape I made who knows when, that was entitled "Classics 88-903, and so I decided to post the first five songs on the tape. This week? We flip the tape to side B, post another 5 songs, and the posting magic continues. The first song on side two of a good mix tape is tricky business, you've got to find a [...]

Essential ?? YES!!! Stet group member, Prince Paul mentored and introduced the world to De La Soul . And before The Roots , there was Stetsasonic , 'the original hip hop band.' Shake threw this up last night and I already knew what I was playing today, strictly off seeing "Go Stetsa" and "Suzy..." in the tracklisting. DJ ReMike & Soul Productions take it back to the old school with a new mixtape dedicated to the original hip hop band. A welcomed mix of music that will spark memories for some, kick knowledge for others; but overall bring good music to the speakers of anyone that listens. [...]

Though it's still summer in the Northern Hemisphere, we're heading for the homestretch as colleges and university students return, Back To School sales start and vacations end. Here are some tunes that have no particular relevance to the season, outside of helping set the mood for some last minute fun in the sun. Hope it's been a good one so far for one and all. Stetsasonic: Talkin' All That Jazz Hugh Masekela: Grazing In The Grass B&T Express: Express Sly & [...]

This track takes 40 seconds to start but when it does it's worth it. I wish I had it on vinyl because I can imagine it would sound so sweet with the pitch wacked up played fast. Ed DMX once rapped it to me a few winters back at a 7 Year Glitch night. He went 'my first taste of Miami bass came when I was on tour in '842 - totally wrong. STETSASONIC - MIAMI BASS
Stetsasonic - "Stet Troop '88!" "Stet Troop '88!" is a portrait of some pretty well-adjusted dudes. They're trying to cut meat out of their diet, they like staying at home with a nice girl, they remember fondly the days they used to build go-karts, and they break even at the casino. They spend maybe a little bit more than they should ( we like cordless mics, we ride ninja bikes ) but I get the feeling they're probably putting a bit away for savings too. A year ago, I discussed the relationship of jazz & hip-hop . As I said then, there is an "uneasy tension" between the two. This issue appeared as early as the Eighties. For example, hip-hop was already smarting under the charge that sampling wasn't creativity (also see this earlier post on the myth that hip-hop was a product of poverty ). Stetsasonic 's "Talkin' All That Jazz" was a little defensive in tone, and it overplayed its argument lyrically, but the music made the point very effectively. Both [...]
