The Problem with Music, by Steve Albini

The Problem With Music by Steve Albini Whenever I talk to a band who are about to sign with a major label, I always end up thinking of them in a particular context. I imagine a trench, about 4 feet ... Continue reading

How to Eat Like Your Favorite Musicians

How to Eat Like Your Favorite Musicians We were rather fascinated to see the recipe for Freddie Mercury's favorite chicken dhansak turn up on the internet recently, courtesy of his onetime personal assistant, who published the secret behind the dish at the late singer's official website . We're not surprised to discover that Mercury was a good cook, nor that his favorite recipe draws on his Parsi heritage — and anyway, the whole thing got us thinking about what some of our other favorite musicians might eat. Cooking is an extension of creativity, after all, and as it turns out, there's a heap of good recipes to [...]

Fascinating Photos of Famous Musicians in Their Studios

Fascinating Photos of Famous Musicians in Their Studios We're constantly fascinated with the creative process here at Flavorwire, and one of the most important components of that process is the space in which it takes place. For musicians, at least as far as the recording process goes, this place is the studio, and as such we thought we'd take a look at the studios of some of our favorite musicians. The contrasts on display are intriguing, from the endearingly chaotic to the pristine and very expensive, from analog to digital, from minimalist to decked out in all sorts of crazy-looking gear. We hope you enjoy them as much [...]

Best Albums Of 2012 – #13 – Cloud Nothings – Attack On Memory

Best Albums Of 2012 – #13 – Cloud Nothings – Attack On Memory Timing is everything for a band or musician that wants to see their record chart high on the end of year lists. Release your album too late and you’ll have missed the party altogether, too early and you run the risk of being forgotten when decision time comes. So it is no mean feat that Attack on Memory , released waaay back in January, has charted so high on our list. Attack on Memory came as a slap in the face to those who heard [...]

Killer Intro, Kim Deal.

Tragically infrequently do we happen upon indie publications doing everything staunchly on their own terms, and with that doing it quite so magically as Wears The Trousers irrefutably do. I only wish I'd happened upon the words and pearly wisdoms of Alan Pedder's self-professed  women in music compendium sooner. Years ago would do. But yeah, in the buildup to last weekend's Shellac ATP (which I'm still kicking my shins in 'til a bloody mess over not having gone to), they ran an enlightening two - part interview with Kim Deal concerning [...]

Guillotine Riot: Porno-Punk Band Plays Fontana's on Nov. 28th / Recording New Album w/ Steve Albini in the Spring

Guillotine Riot: Porno-Punk Band Plays Fontana's on Nov. 28th / Recording New Album w/ Steve Albini in the Spring I've read too many band bios that read something like the following - 'Timmy and Tommy were best friends since childhood and formed a Bright Eyes tribute band in high school. The duo started writing their own music (which Timmy's grandmother said sounds better than Bright Eyes) and moved to New York to make it big. Thus far, the duo has played legendary clubs like Sidewalk Cafe and Arelene's Grocery (where THE STROKES got their start!!)'. To that point - Guillotine Riot's bio (below) is refreshing....and what is even better is that the band [...]

Amanda Palmer: Albini Is A Grumpy Fuck / Albini: She’s Gross

You'd think this Amanda Palmer-Steve Albini beef would just die a quiet death, wouldn't you? Not just yet, if either of the two subjects have anything to say about it. (And they do! In fact, it seems they have A LOT to say!) To recap: First, Palmer solicited her fans to perform with her in exchange for beer and hugs. Then, Albini called her an "idiot" for making such a request. Then Albini apologized to Palmer for the way in which "the Internet" twisted his words, making it sound like he called Palmer an [...]

Steve Albini Attacks The Flaming Lips for Turning Audience Into 'Slave Labor' Chicago Dispatch Daily Chicago, IL - September 17, 2012 Now that former Rapeman Producer/Songwriter Steve Albini has assailed former Dresden Dolls band member Amanda Palmer for what he alleges is exploiting her fan base after asking them to perform as her backing musicians without financial compensation , he how has his sights set on a new foe.
