by teepoo Halifax's Steve Gates released his debut full length album A Bee In Her Mouth in February. It was produced by John Critchley who's worked with such acts like Dan Mangan and Elliott Brood , so you know it's going to feel intimate. The album also features other Halifax artists like Jenn Grant and Rose Cousins. Check out the title track Proud Convey It . If you're in Toronto, he'll be playing a show May 2nd [...]

A new collection from the pride of Nova Scotia. Recorded with a large cast of friends, this full-length from Nova Scotia singer-songwriter Steve Gates (Caledonia) is as spare and beautiful as anything touched by either Neil Young or Daniel Lanois in his solo work. Gates is at his most soulful on "Bright Blue Candy Suns", his most honest on "Five White Tigers", the title track, and "Godforsaken", and at his best throughout. We never lose our connection with him as a vocalist but his...
Winter. You may not like it, but you cannot escape it. Unless you live somewhere where they don't have winter, then kudos, you have escaped winter! For the rest of us though, it's best to find some way to enjoy these frigid months. Outdoor activities are fine and dandy, goodness knows our new skating oval here in Halifax has been a huge hit by all accounts, but if you're looking for something indoors, intimate and musical, then the 2012 edition of the In The Dead of Winter festival is a must. Standing on the escalator, descending from the viewpoint, he passes an acquaintance, his former florist. "Hey how are you," says the florist, who is ascending. Tyrone nods a greeting. But he asks himself: How am I? It shouldn't be so hard to work out. Is he brokenhearted or [...]
by teepoo This is something really down right country. Hey his EP is even called Hello Jesus . That doesn't make his music any less heartfelt. I love this duet with Catherine MacLellan that is a tribute to the women of Highway 16 in British Columbia. Steve Gates- You Were Always On My Mind

Of all the local bands made good, I'm always surprised by how little attention we give Caledonia . The boys write solid songs, stand for something and aren't afraid to pile in the van and tour the shit out of their songs. In this era of blog TUMBLR-born and praised bands, it's refreshing to see a band still go out and earn fans the old fashioned way. The band has taken a pause, but refuse to idle. Zac Crouse just completed an epic Ottawa-Halifax sea kayaking journey to show [...]
