We just got word over here at The Key that Steve Goldberg and the Arch Enemies - the Brian-Wilson-fronting-Fountain s-of-Wayne orchestral indie ensemble that warmed our hearts with its Flood EP last year - is on hiatus following its gig at Kungfu Necktie on Friday. The frontman tells us he's using the downtime to move from symphonic pop to synthpop, and has created a new monicker to do so: Resistor . Listen to and download their debut single "First World Problems" below. First World Problems by Resistor [...]

The first batch of 'new' for the New Year: Of Montreal – Dour Percentage [mp3] (from Paralytic Stalks , out Feb 7) New Hands – This I've Heard [mp3] (from the free single This I've Heard , out now) [...]
Whimsical pop-rock combo Steve Goldberg and the Arch Enemies love lush orchestrations. Dig the string section on today's Philly Local Phile, "July," the lead single from their forthcoming release The Flood . If the Flickr photostream on the band's website is anything to go by, the new EP will also feature clarinet and horns in the mix, along with snappy, Fountains of Wayne-style choral singalongs. We've come to expect this artful approach to songwriting from Mr. Goldberg & Co. What perhaps is unexpected is that music isn't the only art he's into. Goldberg volunteers at Philadelphia [...]
Although July is now over and done with, the heady and (innocently) hedonistic spirit of summer's hottest month is perfectly captured in "July", the new video from Steve Goldberg and the Arch Enemies . Goldberg and co. are prepping for the release of their newest EP, The Flood , by raising funds for the record's post-production . There's 10 days left in their campaign, and any assistance you can provide in helping them get to their $5000 goal would be greatly appreciated. And really, after listening to and watching "July" how [...]

In this edition: New George Harrison Documentary and book; Okkervil River on World Cafe; videos from Battlekat, Stripmall Arhictecture, Vandaveer, the Poison Control Center, and others George Harrison as seen by Martin Scorsese: Click here for details on the forthcoming Living in the Material World. I guess I could say that I hope and expect this Scorcese Bio-doc treatment will be even better than No Direction Home . I think this one will be [...]

Photography by Me ! What is twee? Since the beginning of the dawn of man, this question seems to exist at the very core of our being... I asked the Super Desserts during my interview , and the standard mentions of cutesy music and not-so-cutesy lyrics came up, but really what is cutesy? Is THIS twee? What about this? *shrug* But really, this is really not about "twee", [...]
(photo:Sarah Cass) I wrote about Steve Goldberg and the Arch Enemies back in September of 2007, and that feels like ages in blog years. Back then I was digging Goldberg & co.'s self-titled debut of elaborately orchestrated pop songs, which grew out of a project of Goldberg's while attending Carnegie Mellon University School of Music. The band is back with a new EP called Labyrinths , and while not a huge leap forwards from their debut, it solidifies Goldberg's reputation as a great songwriter. Matt Picasso has given it [...]
Steve Goldberg's new EP "Labyrinths" is out today. It's been a long while since I wrote about him and that's nobody's fault but mine. He's been churning out pop music since I knew him back on the Decemberists' message board in 2005 and it seems he's only gotten better with time. MP3: Steve Goldberg and [...]
It's Thanksgiving in the U.S. this week, and so Fingertips is taking a holiday. Not to leave you empty-handed, here are five current free and legal MP3s that are available from artists previously featured here, minus lengthy reviews. Princeton was just featured last week so I will not likely feature them again quite so quickly, but any of the others may yet get a full-fledged review here, once I listen in more detail and see what my ears make of each of them. Wishing a Happy Thanksgiving to all those who celebrate, and a cheerful week to one [...]

>> More photos on Flickr Steve Goldberg and the Arch Enemies @ Kung Fu Necktie, Philadelphia (6/16/09) Don't be fooled by their weak-ass band name... Philly's own Steve Goldberg and the Arch Enemies play thoughtful and catchy "baroque pop" that's worth a listen. Even if their non-descript straightforward appearance doesn't appeal to you, their '60s-style melodies and well-composed orchestration definitely will. Kidding aside, they play a great live set and seem to be a nice bunch of guys. Steve better watch his [...]
In my personal journal, I made a post about the SXSW tracks that I liked from this year, which didn't seem to get any interest from my flist, so I figured I would inflict it on people who might appreciate it a bit more. And here goes. --- No, I didn't go. But, thanks to Paul Ford over there at the Morning News website, I got a chance to listen to all the tracks in the SXSW09 torrent file, without having to download the whole thing. And from the 1,000 plus tracks, I have found a [...]

Aaron Stout: This emerging 27-year-old reveals vivid images of travel, heartbreak and spirituality in whatever he's working on. All of this, encrypted with brooding layers and ethereal sounds, further the listener's experience. "The Coronation" "Fountain of Youth" Cannonball Jane: "Cannonball Jane is the coolest one woman band I've heard in a long time. This is what Carole King would sound like if she had a sampler and was really into Francoise Hardy. I love her recordings and can't wait for more!" – Kathleen Hanna [...]

S teve Goldberg and the Arch Enemies debut album also doubles as Goldberg's thesis project and the credits read like they just might be the project of the entire campus of Carnegie Mellon's School Of Music. There's even a little local connection as the album was recorded and mastered by Garrett Haines (Starlight Mints.) You can stream the whole thing here or catch some Neutral Milk Hotel and John Vanderslice covers on their website . mp3 [...]
