The lineup for High Sierra Music Festival was just announced and it's absolutely a fantastic day for all my friends (based on my chat windows and the status updates I'm reading). We wait all year for this announcement locally because we know that High Sierra is one of the best festivals that all of us [...]

Your Sunday selections: ► San Diego-based Steve Poltz , the wildly entertaining singer-songwriter-satirist who rose from coffeehouse phenom to collaborate with Jewel and become known for sing-alongs, headlines this month's edition of the Sunday Night Jones at the Satellite. The evening also features Billy Harvey , the hosts Daniel Ahearn & the Jones and a post-headliner songwriter circle in the Satellite's back room. ► Guitar whiz Marnie Stern (pictured) visits the Bootleg Theater, supported by Dunes, Wet & Reckless and Cinderella Motel. ► The Chapin Sisters bring their [...]

Sunday was the last day for the Ottawa Folk Festival . The weather changed from hot to cold due to the incoming of Hurricane Irene. Luckily it didn't hit Ottawa but gutted parts of the USA. Mostly it was cool and windy. People braved the weather and came out to the workshops that happened at the festival. The workshops I attended were: Intro to Harmonica Cigar Box Guitar [...]

Schmaltzy as all heck, but in a good way.

Time to tango with the inbox! ++ Here's a version of the classic The Way We Were by Steve Poltz . This is one of those songs that might could go sour in the wrong hands, but if you like Ariel Pink or Devendra Banhart, there's a certain similar bead curtain hippie feel to this interpretation that makes the song unique and interesting*. [...]

I still say mixtape, even though I think tapes are a long way behind us now. I remember getting my first Walkman and frantically taping songs off Take 40 Australia to listen to when falling asleep. That was back in the days of TLC's 'Diggin' On You' and No Doubt's 'Don't Speak'. Rock. On. This is not the longest mixtape in the world, it's true (I'm still trawlin' through my emails you see), but I've been spinning these tracks while I've been getting all those links organised and they sound pretty damn good together. Listen [...]

the house was deathly quiet the other night and i actually got to listen to some stuff, alone, in peace. not new stuff mind you cause that would make too much sense, but i started listening to bee thousand and was trying to remember what my thoughts/feelings were, all the way back when, during my first listen to it. sadly, its almost impossible to re-feel something, as hard as you may try. then i started wishing/hoping/dreaming that i could go back and experience a whole bunch of first listens again. then came up with the list below of records that [...]

The countdown is officially on folk. Next week The Hermit reunion shows will hit Halifax and the mix of nostalgia, rock, and lines shaved into people's head will reach critical mass. To help get everyone excited, Joel sent over a great video of one of the unreleased gems on the Box Set - out March 17th on New Scotland Records. The video is collection of tour & backstage footage that shows the band back in the day and as they grow older, including MacGetts wearing an outfit that looks like he should be working at a frozen [...]

It's a bit surprising that we haven't beat you over the head with Steve Poltz coverage here on herohill. Considering the Halifax born, San Diego resident has been writing music for years and how easy it is to sink in to his mix of charm, humour and simple, but amazingly catchy melodies, you'd think every update he offers would be documented in all of the social media outlets the hill has access to. Sadly, that's not the case. This is our first post on the man and even though I thoroughly enjoyed anything I've heard from [...]
