I've always thought I deserved a better song. I mean, my name deserves a better song. It's not that I don't appreciate that it got one to begin with. Pearl Jam couldn't have picked a better name for the anti-hero of its best-known song, if not its biggest hit (Hot 100 peak: No. 79). Would Nathan have had the same ring? Or Brendan, Ryan or Justin (three of my favorite guy names -- apparently I'm a sucker for ones with two syllables that end in "N")? Probably not. Though I like to [...]

Last week we broke the news that the Allman Brothers Band would play a series of shows with Steve Winwood this summer. Today, the dates for the jaunt have been revealed. While the Allmans will share the bill with Winwood at a number of shows, they'll also perform at Chicago's Chicago Theatre by their lonesomes and have announced four shows with Grace Potter and the Nocturnals. The tour starts with the ABB's headlining appearance at The Peach Music Festival before the band hits the [...]
![[stream] Ra Ra Riot // All I Fear](http://cdn.elbo.ws/posts/4901542_lg.jpg)
Everything I heard from Ra Ra Riot's most recent effort - Beta Love - caused me to cancel my pre-order of the album. I didn't like the synth-centric direction in which the band seemed to be heading on it; it's not that I mind synths, but more that I didn't like Ra Ra Riot's use of them. I said something disparaging about one of the songs on Twitter and the band tweeted back about it, which made me feel bad that I was harsh about a band that I rather enjoy. That said, the band has always [...]

For the past month or so rumors have been circulating among Allman Brothers Band fans that the Southern Rockers would team up with Steve Winwood for a series of shows this summer. Today we have our most definitive proof of the pairing as a listing for an August 28th show at SPAC in Saratoga Springs, New York featuring the two acts has appeared on LiveNation.com [screenshot here ]. As of now that's the only date listed, but we'd be surprised if Winwood and the [...]

A few weeks back Brock Butler played a solo acoustic show at Pawley's Island Tavern in South Carolina, where he offered his usual mix of covers from the '60s through today, sung and performed as only he can. Among the groups Butler covered at the March 28th performance were Ryan Adams, Pete Townshend, Adele, Massive Attack, Paul Simon, Sublime, Pearl Jam and Mumford and Sons. Taper Chris Davis recorded Brock's show and has posted a fantastic soundboard matrix to the Live Music Archive. Today [...]

Today's Monday Matinee offering is a documentary that highlights the amazing career of Steve Winwood. Steve's success includes stints in historic groups such as The Spencer Davis Group, Traffic, and Blind Faith (to name a few) and an amazing solo career that continues through today. The documentary is named English Soul, highlighting the soulful quality of Steve's voice. I think you will really enjoy this one.....thanks to the BBC for putting it together!
Clapton's lone songwriting credit for Blind Faith actually came from the Derek and the Dominoes sessions. Eric handles the guitar and leaves the vocals to Steve Winwood. Rounding out this original "super-group" Ginger Baker on drums and Traffic bassist Rick Grech.

David Bowie and Eric Clapton both released albums today. One is a bit more brave, the other functions as musical comfort food. I want to talk about the latter. Why? Because after two listen-throughs, I'm not entirely convinced that David Bowie's album is quite as brilliant as some are claiming it is. Granted, both times I was plugging away in my cubicle, I still wasn't convinced. Maybe the beauty is in the lyrics. That being said, let's talk about mashed potatoes mom always makes for Thanksgiving Old Sock is Eric Clapton's 21st [...]
Like 461 Ocean Boulevard, but with better singing, Eric Clapton's Old Sock is similarly thin on original songs, swerves into an amiable island-inflected vibe, and never gets too far outside of its super-mellow box. It's also similar in that it features a stellar band - this time including keyboardist Chris Stainton, drummer Steve Gadd and bassist Willie Weeks - but [...]
ha ha fucking prince! he freaking brings it huge time on this, and then fucking walks off stage. hilarious! with that said, i tend to forget what an amazing guitarist he is. The post tom petty, prince, jeff lynne, steve winwood, and others "while my guitar gently weeps" appeared first on exit flagger .

Guitar legend Eric Clapton has announced plans for his 21st studio album, and first since 20102s Clapton . The musician's own imprint Bushbranch Records (in association with SurfDog in the U.S. and Canada and Polydor internationally) will release Old Sock on March 12th. The record features two newly penned originals ("Every Little", "Gotta Get Over") and 10 covers of Clapton's all-time favorite works rounded out by a number of his contemporaries and friends. Blues legend J.J. Cale adds backing vocals and extra guitar to "Angel", R&B singer Chaka Khan sings backup vocals on "Get [...]

We don't have any doubt that the recently announced Fleetwood Mac show at Wells Fargo on April 6th doesn't have the potential for a night of awesome classic rockness. But here's one we're cautiously optimistic about - Rod Stewart with Steve Winwood at the Wells Fargo Center on April 12th. Here's why: very likely we're ... Continue reading
While it remains to be seen whether or not Conor Oberst was serious about hanging up his Bright Eyes moniker, the wordy singer-songwriter has decided to revive his old side-project - Desaparecidos . The politically charged, punk-y hardcore band have only seen sparse action over the last decade since the release their lone studio album Read Music/Speak Spanish all the way back in 2002. This past summer Oberst dusted the band off, releasing the single MariKKKopa / Backsell , which took aim at Arizona's controversial Sheriff Joe Arpaio and the state's immigration laws, as well [...]

Jimi Hendrix would have been 70 years old today. A few weeks ago, during his concert in Houston Paul McCartney paid tribute to his friend Jimi Hendrix. At the end of "Let Me Roll It," McCartney's churning rocker, he appended some surprising lead guitar work in the form of "Foxey Lady." How awesome is a musician who has earned a tribute even from a Beatle? When Eric Clapton and Steve Winwood toured together, the finale of their show was a fiery guitar duel on Hendrix's "Voodoo Child (Slight Return)" and ZZ Top's Billy Gibbons [...]

Solitude, like silence, is golden, but in music it doesn't always yield gold and platinum rewards. If you're used to being part of a group, and fans are accustomed to seeing you that way, too, going solo can be risky. Even if you manage to scrounge up a hit or three on your own, Peter Cetera and Steve Perry style, chances are you'll still end up crouching in the shadow of your former band, Peter Cetera, and Steve Perry style. There's commercial -- an sometimes creative -- safety in numbers. That might be why Chrissie Hynde has [...]
The Spencer Davis Group was, and remains, more than Steve Winwood – having continued recording and touring into the new millennium under the auspices of its Welsh-born multi-instrumentalist namesake. Post-Winwood highlights have included 1967’s Here We Go Round the Mulberry Bush film and soundtrack, a pair of Top 40 U.S. hits in “Time Seller” and “Mr. Second Class,” an underrated [...]
