As I continue an almost-endless effort at trying to get caught up on the music sent in, we've made it up to stuff that arrived in July so there's hope. Thanks to all the artists, labels and hired hit men for their patience. Comments will be brief, but the music is what matters anyway. • • • • Sounding much more musically polished than his 18 years, Portland's Jacob Magers released his debut EP Pendulums, which he wrote and recorded a while a high school senior. His music is influenced by the [...]

I’m getting this post out early this morning then heading out the door for my last week of work before a week of vacation. Well, more like time off, really – not like I’m taking a real vacation; I will unfortunately be staying in and around town. This go-round with the mailbox yielded up a couple of artists I’ve written about before: Sir Salvatore and Leerone have both previously graced these pages and both have new music out that you should be aware of. I’ve also gotten a handful of country contributions lately. That [...]

Going offline for two weeks means returning to an inbox in the triple digits, and though my brain is swimming a bit from trying to cut it down to size in one afternoon, sifting through the backlog of sound is made easier by the presence of a few true gems, and a few others with moments of greatness they just cry out to be heard in spite of any rough edges. I'll have video, audio, and commentary from the newest and best from my annual pilgrimage through the New England folk scene anon, probably early [...]

As long as there have been bands, there have been songs about women, from Marilyn Monroe to Monica Lewinsky to Queen Elizabeth. So why not Paris Hilton, the modern era's most disposable tartlet, a perfect subject for the modern era's disposable pop songs. Which isn't to say that all of the below are lousy, but unlike say "Alison," "Melissa" or "Angie," won't likely be remembered generations from now. Nor for that matter will the lasting cultural contributions of Ms. Hilton. Cansei de Ser Sexy - "Meeting Paris Hilton" Attempts to set [...]

Steven Mark has always found writing any form of art to be personally natural. Whether it was the writing of a play, a story, or even a song, the esteemed graduate of Columbia Journalism School has long balanced his stellar introspective on art with his own personal artistic creations. Balancing a career between a journalist and a playwright, Mark eventually found solace in the risky but rewarding career choice of a musician. Growing up an avid music fan, Mark had a present and concise ear for melodic enjoyment, making the incorporation of instrumental and journalistic lyrical content come off [...]
