Before I give you a brief history lesson I have to mention, this is sort of a bitchy dish. Back in November I cooked up this compromise and exuded about it in a playlist . I then moved on to other foods, the holidays, life stuff. Unfortunately, like a spoiled brat, this posole would not let me live a day without reminding me that I had not dedicated a post to it. I tried to reason that a playlist is infinitely better than a post but it would not listen. So, I gave in. Tonight. Anyway, during [...]

As the year comes to a close, we at 1001Songs realize there are some gaps to fill before we can declare that we have successfully scratched that 40 year itch. Today we scratch that soul itch with notable releases we didn't get to in 2012. Funkadelic : Biological Speculation [Purchase] Funkadelic follows up their classic 1971 album Maggot Brain with a freak funk double album. The star of [...]

As songwriters, Stew and his longtime collaborator in the Negro Problem , Heidi Rodewald, have the moves of a boxer; They lure with melody, feint with hooks and jab with couplets, sometimes mercilessly. Race, relationships, artistic authenticity — they've gone a few rounds with them all over four the course of Negro Problem albums (and four more solo outings by Stew, the L.A. native born Mark Stewart). Now doing business as Stew & the Negro Problem, the duo — once a couple and still creative partners — today announced the January release of "Making It," their first album since [...]

Mancunian photographer/all-round-good-gu y Gareth Hacking got in touch to point out that, after discovering a flurry of pop star/cookery cross-over projects ( see post and subsequent comments ), the joker in the pack has been found in the form of Luke Haines, skewed pop star extraordinaire . Luke describes the making of his rabbit stew thusly: "I f you we're making this stew for Hawkwind (underrated), as opposed to just grooving to Hawkwind whilst you heat shit up, then it would be better if you used magic mushrooms. " Cooking for rock stars is a [...]
Warm weather is coming. Starting tomorrow it will be in the 502s for the next four or five days. My only wish is that the wind takes a break and stays off-shore so we can enjoy the weather. Gracie and I have a few things to do this morning then we'll be back to watch the Red Sox play their home opener. Never in my scariest nightmares did I expect them to be 0-6 to start the season. Maybe playing the Yankees this afternoon will raise them to a higher plane. I don't cook for myself very often. [...]

A lot of musical traffic has coursed down Silver Lake Boulevard since that band with the confrontational name — the Negro Problem — held down the very first monthly residency *** at Spaceland in September, 1996. In the middle part of last decade, the beloved L.A. band anchored by Stew (born Mark Stewart) and Heidi Rodewald rode off to New York City. There, they became, as they call it, "show folk," collaborating on the Tony-winning musical "Passing Strange," which also became a Spike Lee-directed movie . Now they are dusting off old [...]

After a week of what felt like I had competed in a tractor pull sans the tractor, I needed some music that would ease my weary body, mind, and soul. You gotta’ know where I’m coming from. Traffic congestion to and from the office, dealing with people who you’d swear have multiple personalities and aren’t afraid to use them, old coffee left in the coffee pot. It was enough to make me go all Ripple on someone. And then . . . enter Gumshen . It’s almost as if these lads from Seattle were psychically connected with my plight [...]

This thing we do here at The Ripple Effect can, at times, be a thankless job. Some of the reviewed bands just give us that casual nod like, ‘Yeah. We know.’ Other times, it can be quite fulfilling with gracious musicians returning every email or correspondence with the same fervor that we put into our reviews. Put yourself in our position for just a second and you’ll find yourself sifting through bargain bins of CD’s that are randomly chucked into place. Or, wading through a virtual sea of shifting discs as the ever so patient postal worker drops [...]

I got to see the show with Kim a few weeks ago. I'm not a big fan of musicals, but this is Stew from The Negro Problem, a longtime favorite. Stew has become one of my favorite songwriters, right up...
