Though it's only March, the venerable Arts and Crafts label is already working overtime on new releases and A&R, in fact, they've already put out three albums and signed three new bands. Here's a little bit about their new signees and the new one from the Apostle of Hustle : Years "A true visionary of compositional soundscaping, Ohad Benchetrit , provides an immense soundtrack and illustration of his accomplished production and guitar proficiencies." Kyle Hutton When Rajiv, singer and guitarist for Oh No Forest Fires , contacted me about running this giveaway, he offered up a decidedly graphic if colourful name for the bill which will grace the stage at Lee's Palace in a couple Fridays. Unfortunately, I couldn't think of a way to utilize said phrase without showing up in Google searches that I'd rather not appear in, so I'll have to keep it between us - unless he takes my suggestion and gets t-shirts with it made. But the facts are these. On March [...]

I'm at the point where I've really had just about all that I can stand of winter, and I'd be lying if I didn't admit to really wanting to stay home on that freezing Friday night last week. But I had invested so much time and energy into promoting this show at The Silver Dollar that I knew I had to go. Add to that the extra motivation of the fact that a friend of mine, whom I hadn't seen for a couple of months, had just returned from Mexico itching to go to a show, and you've [...]

STILL LIFE STILL Everybody needs a support group, and from what I've seen, no Toronto band has a greater one than Still Life Still . In a recent interview on the Zygiella podcast with local sensations Dinosaur Bones , the members of that band could not stop singing their praises. The notorious Lonely Vagabond has described them as a "sonic-stew of epic rock with rhythmic theatrics rivaling that of a frat celebration." And James L. Burling of Boxes and Bags has declared [...]
Prior to Broken Social Scene taking the stage at Bass Concert Hall we were able to grab a few minutes with Brendan Canning and Charles Spearin. They talk about the current state of the band, their most recent tour, and details about their solo albums. Thanks to Robin and Brendan for all of the arrangements and preparations. On Tuesday night, I attended the show that I had contested out a few weeks ago at Sneaky Dee's featuring two of the most talked about local bands on the scene today as well as an Australian import that truly is one of the most unique acts that I've ever seen. Rudely Interrupted were right smack dab in the middle of an incredible rock 'n roll experience, one that I'm sure band mentor and musical director Rohan Brooks never anticipated when he formed the band as part of a [...]

I got a note from Musebox recently about a show they're putting together on Dec. 9th in Toronto. Rudely Interrupted , a 6 person band from Australia, are touring to North American to perform at the UN in New York for Disability Day on December 3rd. Of the 6 members of the band, 5 members share a range of disabilities from autism, blindness to down syndrome. Musically speaking, they describe themselves as " Joy Division having a Gary Numan Party while eating pitch-perfect cookies ". The show looks to be a fun night, with local [...]

Rudely Interrupted - Don't Break My Heart EP In the early 80's, many talented bands found themselves at a serious disadvantage with the rise of music video requiring them to engage a certain look if they wanted to enjoy a measure of success. This was unfortunate and, perhaps more importantly, very unfair in the sense that many good artists were tossed aside simply because they didn't have the supermodel good looks of Duran Duran or the quirky sexiness of The Go'Go's . Thankfully, it appears [...]

When I first heard that Halifax's Dog Day was going to be playing Bookie's Nu Music Nite at The Horseshoe, I was pretty excited. Their CD Night Group is easily one of my most listened to albums of the year. At that time, the Horseshoe Concert Listings site said that they were opening the night, to be followed by "surprise guests." Colour me curious. Later it was revealed that this was to be The Stills CD release party for their brand new Oceans Will Rise release. I'm really not much of a [...]

I tried on a dress yesterday at Value Village. Its purple with fake jewels on it. Why was I trying on dresses? It's for my twin brother; I'm going to make him wear it all weekend at his bachelor party up north..... expect posts this weekend to be infrequent, sloppy and sunburnt. Thought I'd post a song here from a young local group called Still Life Still . They're a six piece indie pop/rock band hailing from East York (and proud of it). During their set during NXNE at the Silver Dollar [...]
