I thought I'd continue with the theme of 'Beautiful' this week, so let's start out with a few quotations: "The world is beautiful, but has a disease called man" - Friedrich Nietzsche "You don't love a woman because she is beautiful, but she is beautiful because you love her" - Anon "The only beautiful things are the things [...]
I've been airborne for about eight hours in the past week, and one of my favorite parts of flying is bursting through the clouds (or better yet, hovering right above them). This experience has inspired the latest playlist, albeit a short one. The top seven "cloud" songs. (Click on the word cloud in each for [...]

Round Like a circle in a spiral Like a wheel within a wheel Never ending or beginning On an ever-spinning reel... Yep, it's Pi Day today. Go forth, eat pie, be merry. Hard 'n Phirm - Pi We kick off the celebrations with pretty much the greatest π song ever, a staple of Pi Day posts for many years to come. Also check out the hilarious Keith Schofield-directed music video , which is where I first heard the song. Hard 'n Phirm - [...]

Under the Covers, Day 5/5 Up for Review: The Glory of Gershwin , 1994 While the rest of this week's features looked at albums done in this decade, today we go back to 1994, which I still consider "modern" because for the life of me, I just cannot believe that it was already 13 years ago. Anyway, The Glory of Gershwin works as a two-fold tribute album. One, of course, as a means of paying tribute to [...]
Someone commenting on my last post labeled my as a misogynist, which is something I don't take lightly so I feel that I must defend myself. Misogyny is typically defined as a hatred towards women because they are women. I don't hate women. Sure, sometimes they confuse the hell out of me , but I definitely don't hate them. I also don't believe that calling for corophagia-related death of Fergie is a misogynist statement at all. Sure, it may be in poor taste and more than a little gross but being in good taste is [...]

The Police Churchill Downs, Louisville, KY Saturday, July 14, 2007 For as long as I can remember, the top spot on the list of bands I wish I had seen live has been The Police. But they broke up when I was fourteen, and even if I had been old enough to go to concerts without my parents, Spokane, Washington was not a regular stop on most major rock acts itenerary. So when they announced their reunion tour back in February, the question wasn't if I was going to see them, but where. The first thoughts [...]

Mercury Rising by Sting isn't considered one of the highlights in his solo-career, although he had a crack band behind him. Featuring the late pianist Kenny Kirkland and guitarist Dominic Miller. On this album from 1996 is a French song Sting wrote with Miller, La Belle Dame Sans Regrets . I'm not a big Sting fan (although I'm looking forward to see the reunited Police in concert, after summer), so I really wouldn't know why Mr Tantra Sex went French on us. Then again, he did a passable version of Ne Me Quitte Pas too ( [...]
The weird shit that you can find on soundtracks to obscure movies never ceases to amaze me. Most recently I found the soundtrack to Party Party , a forgotten 80s teen flick about (surprise) a party. I can find absolutely no information about it online so if anyone knows anything about it please comment. It certainly had a decent soundtrack though, with some odd ska-tinged covers of classic tunes, and some appearances by some very noteworthy 80s artists that you might not expect. Time for a track-by-track rundown. Elvis Costello - [...]
Unchained Melody is one of the most iconic songs of all time. The writer of this song, Lyricist Hy Zaret, passed away yesterday at the ripe old age of 99. In his memory, I found some of the more well known renditions (and there are a lot to choose from): Elvis Presley, Righteous Brothers , U2, The Scene from the movie Ghost , Tom Jones, and Engelbert Humperdinck. There are two other songs which I had always attributed to others were in fact [...]
Here's a list of links from Chris Carder. But first, if you ever google , msn , or yahoo chris carder you'll notice one of the paid ads almost always associated with my name. as of yet, this link does not have any Chris Carder Music, thus a warning label is in order: Carderville Dependent Artists (a swicki - a search community) You Can get Trust Now [...]
I vow to clear out all my fucking remixes, because they're half the backlog I got right now. Expect more from some Lost Turntable favorites (New Order, Depeche Mode, etc.,) in a few days. The Smashing Pumpkins Perfect (Perfecto Mix) Perfect (Electro Breakbeat Mix) I was a die-hard Pumpkins fan back in the day (the day being the mid-to-late 90s). I saw them live in Toledo in 1996 and they fucking blew my mind away. It seemed like they played forever and didn't leave until everyone [...]

As Shane's post mentioned, the Spurs won the title last night. I would have trouble caring less about those guys, so good riddance '07 NBA.A team with Horry, Brent Barry, a dude who looks like the Jamaican guy from Marked For Death, and bald spot Ginoblli will never be a team I want to watch, but this year in the NBA was not too bad. So to close the year, I decided to compare the '07 All-NBA team to some bands. A stretch? Maybe, but hopefully you enjoy it. Dirk Nowitzki :: Sting Shane [...]
// Tori Amos - Cool On Your Island (live)// Sting - Island of Souls (live)// Sarah McLachlan - Building A Mystery (live) p.s: I love Lost...
Yesterday news outlets were falling all over themselves mentioning that it was the 40th anniversary of the release of the Beatles psychedelic masterpiece Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band . If you were listening to the BBC, that would be accurate. But here in America, the album didn't come out until June 2, 1967. So all those cheesy intros about how "it was 40 years ago today" were (slightly) inaccurate. The album is often cited as the band's magnum opus, but [...]

Sting 's Ghost Story (from Brand New Day ) is the song sitting in my ear today, after Ray LaMontagne 's Be Here Now (from Until the Sun Turns Black ) reminded me of it: the guitar lines are very similar in the beginning, and both songs have similarly hushed vocals and hesitant, upward-flowing melodic phrases. tags: [Music] , [mp3] , [Earworms] , [Sting] , [Ray LaMontagne]

Oh my... is it Friday again??? Time just seems to fly, and I haven't really prepared much for today's Flashback Friday. But instead of putting together a half-hearted posting about past heroes now, let's get the plateaus out, turn on the mirrorball and D - A - N - C - E !!! Wang Chung - Dance Hall [...]

As promised , we're closing the Month of Male with a top 15 of the bestest Brel-covers by men. Yes, I know I said Top 25 before, but how many Ne Me Quitte Pas-versions can you take? I left out the four covers already posted (Pierre Lapointe's version should be in this list, though). And I've added a few miscalleneous versions. Thanks to Gerwin, SOM, John, Billy and everyone else who has send me emails and tips about coverversions. Hors Categorie Dusty Springfield - If You Go Away [...]
Having lassoed the best-selling classical record last year by reinvigorating the lute, Sting now seems to be turning his attention to bringing new life to another long-forgotten endeavour considered by many to be better left in the past: A Police reunion . Fuel to the rumour-pyre has been given by the heavy hint A&M dropped when announcing a bunch of DVD stuff to mark the 30th anniversary of the band recouping ("breaking America"): "It is our intention to mark the anniversary by doing something special with the band's catalog of [...]
