Max Bell has been known to say, " eh mon ," in mixed company. Stones Throw perennially cracks the top ten (and some years top one) lists for 'The Best Independent Record Label.' The same can be said for Dub Club—the Wednesday night Dub/Reggae/Dancehall show that blasts blunted and bone-soothing bass out of Los Angeles's Echoplex—which should be in the top three on the list of the 'Best Things to Do on a Wednesday in LA' (I don't see it here , but maybe that's a good thing). Whether or not you believe in Jah, he [...]

Northern Californian soul duo Myron & E , backed by the Timmion Records in-house band, The Soul Investigators, give us a slice of retrograde soul 'n' funk action with a new track taken from their forthcoming album on Peanut Butter Wolf's legendary Stones Throw Records - a neat, logical fit despite the fact the label is most famous for sampling classic sounding tunes such as this rather than putting them out. Having collaborated with the Timmion band on a slew of 45s already, the duo, whose sound positively radiates the classic soul vibes of the 60s [...]

Independent record labels are sprouting up all over the place - in location & style. And the ones that are doing it right not only have a choice selection in catalogue, but also take the time to artfully craft their image as they do their artists. Each of these 12 labels sport some of the most well respected producers & musicians that belong on this blog and create a culture with style around their music. On here I may point out a few that lack in proper online presence, but they are all doing [...]

This one is a fantastic edit of Daft Punk - normally these are a dime a dozen, but Vanderway has hit on something here. Daft Punk - Random Access Memories (Vanderway Edit) by L'ordre This slow instrumental hip-hop track is drawn from Kendrick Lamar's "Bitch Don't Kill My Vibe." BDKMV Refix feat. Bay Area duo Myron & E released a new single "If I Gave You My Love," off their upcoming BROADWAY album dropping July 2nd 2013. Both from the Bay Area, Myron & E (Myron Glasper and Eric "E da Boss" Cooke) met while on tour with Blackalicious. Cooke was the tour DJ, Glasper sang backup. While on another tour through Finland, Cooke found himself in an impromptu jam session with members of The Soul Investigators, whose work with singer Nicole Willis helped define them as one of Europe's foremost retro-soul bands. Today's mix is more downtempo and should help you get into a good warm weather groove. My personal favorite is Kyogi's remix of "Valentine." We're saving the best for last. We'll start off with some reggae. Dub Club's latest lends a great groove. Dub Club - Beware Dub by Stones Throw Records The best part of this mashup is Jhameel - the graduated-in-2-years-from-UC-B erkeley-with-a-degree-in-arabi c-second-coming-of-MJ artist. Jonwayne uploaded another track -"Cool Runnings"- off of his Cassette 2 yesterday, featuring the cool-tounged, Long Beach residing rapper, Zeroh . In case you needed it, (which you didn't), "Cool Runnings" is proof of Jon's mastery in beat production and spoken word. If you haven't heard of Jonwayne before, imagine J Dilla and Notorious B.I.G. had a white baby who grew up playing Nintendo 64 for at least 6 hours a day; alternatively, stream the track below- Buy Cassette [...]

Photo by Dominick Mastrangelo Chvrches have a lovely roller rink video for their song "Now is Not The Time." Where previous roller rink videos might focus on the retro dress or mad tricks, Chvrches instead lets the lights play while skaters circle like ghosts and their synth pop song sweetly fills the cavernous space. You can also hear their KEXP studio session here . [ Stereogum ] Today a [...]
Oh No, the Stones Throw alum whom some might no better as the younger brother of the beloved Madlib , just released the newest of his Disrupted Ads tracks "Boom." Aptly paired up with little-known action sequences in films, where the "Boom" works well, the supposedly nerving track seems a lot more fun with the video. Check it out below and grab Disrupted Ads today.

(Notes: You aren't ready for this). Calling CX Kidtronik's "Locked In" just another "stellar" Stones Throw Release does a disservice to "Locked In." The cut-throat beats Kidtronik brings, with the help of M.O.P. member Billy Daze are gripping, terrorizing, and Holy Hell mesmerizing. It doesn't take too long for you to get launched in to the all-world frenzy of "Locked In," but the blistering force is over before you're even ready to let go. Get a listen below and watch out for Kidtronik's Krak Attack 2: The [...]

CX Kidtronik holds a special place in my heart. At a Stones Throw concert five years ago, CX opened for the likes of Madlib, Peanut Butter Wolf, Karriem Riggins, Erykah Badu and more. I had never heard of him, and I am pretty sure no one in the crowd did either. With that said, he jumped right in to an absolutely absurd set of booty shaking and MPC blasting. But what really set things off, is when CX got pushed into the crowd by his hype man, and fell head first, right on top of me. Apparently he had a [...]

Crow44 is the moniker of Desmond Pierce, an elder British statesman of music from North Yorkshire. While his music career started in the 60s as a member of a Yardbirds-esque group, for the last decade, Pierce has kept himself busy cranking out lo-fi bedroom tunes on his old PC. Eventually, his prolific output caught the attention of multi-instrumental aficionado James Pants as he was scouering the Internet "on the hunt for vampire music," and passed what he heard along to Stones Throw ...
No label has been getting better press lately more than Stones Throw Records . The underground hip-hop label has another gem to offer in its February arsenal, in the form of Julian Malone . His newest cut, "909," comes his sure-to-be-excellent mixtape Diff.Rnt , and uses one of Clams Casino's more well-known A$AP Rocky beats featured in "Bass." Check out the track below.
Just listen to this. I know it should trigger fandome from many people that enjoy the likes of Ariel Pink and maybe Mac DeMarco or Tune-Yards whatever quirky genre straddling, tempo changing and melody challenging. I recoiled on first listen, but there is something oddly charming? So I put it to you. Verdict? The track is by Crow44 . It is called "Love You To Death". It is on a self-titled EP and you can read more about the project from Desmond Pierce here . Given the title, I figured [...]

From MED & BLU's upcoming The Burgundy EP is the glorious "Burgundy Whip," highlighted by the always-stellar production of Madlib . And for those wondering where that R&B sample is coming from, it's fellow Stones Throw alum Georgia Anne Muldrow . Stream it below and grab the EP February 19.
Recently, while trolling some Google search results for the word "vampires," James Pants developed a mild obsession with an extremely obscure, North Yorkshire-based bedroom musician named Desmond Pierce. Pierce is an older gentleman who adopted ... read more
