Strand of Oaks has had a helluva 2012, which saw him release another beautiful album in Dark Shores and found him reaching out to the masses on tours with the likes of Bowerbirds, Yellow Ostrich, and The Tallest Man on Earth. Showalter is all set to wrap up his successful year with his first headlining show at Johnny Brenda's this Saturday, and it will likely be one of the last chances to see him play a hometown show before he heads for a tour of Sweden and Norway with Tallest Man on Earth in 2013. Little [...]

well, here we are. 2012 almost over, my 7th year of running this joint has passed, and this is what i have come up with. most of this will not be a surprise to anyone who follows this place with any regularity. this year was increasingly hard, i must admit. i think every record in my top ten has the potential of landing that coveted #1 spot cause they're all amazing records in my very very humble opinion, but at the end of the day there can only be one, much like the highlander. my number one record this year [...]

It's currently Saturday, but aside from unpaid athletes on the TV Screen, it's felt like a Sunday. And this tune has Sunday written all over it. Laid back, chilled vibes and a very unexpected take on one of the most inspiring, transcendent songs known to mankind. "This Must Be The Place" is one of "those songs" the kind that's impossible to hate, the kind that seizes you. It's the type of song that makes babies, breaks windows, and cures politics. The Strand of Oaks take on it mostly makes babies, and also sprinkles in a little [...]

What began as the bored and contemplative musings of a music blogger on a road trip eventually became a large project commemorating the 30th anniversary of Bruce Springsteen’s seminal raw acoustic folk album. Long Distance Salvation: A Tribute to Bruce Springsteen's Nebraska features the original E Street band demos – Springsteen recorded to a 4 track with just his guitar and harmonica – plus 4 bonus tracks as interpreted by many of today’s great Americana, folk, and roots acts: The Wooden Sky, Juniper Tar, Joe Purdy & Garrison Starr, Spirit Family Reunion, Joe Pug, Jonah Tolchin, [...]

I was never a fan of Bruce Springsteen. He was a guy I just missed out on time wise. By the time I was music conscious he was releasing some of his more bombastic music ("Born in the USA") and I was turned off despite the fact that that song was an unlikely anthem given its negative outlook on America. Had I heard Nebrask first things would have been different for me. Instead of loving Bruce though I found my own Springsteens, Dylans and Beatles to love in their place. Ironically a few of them [...]

Philadelphia based musician Timothy Showalter – a.k.a. Strand of Oaks – is out with his latest full length of melancholy folk, the aptly titled Dark Shores . Showalter, whose debut album Leave Ruin stemmed from the loss of his house in a fire and departure of his fiancée, is no stranger to hard times and heartbreak. While Showalter plumbs the depths of despair and dwells amongst the sadness, his songs always offer a glimpse of hope. Produced by prolific songwriter John Vanderslice, the hauntingly lovely collection of ten songs are his most accessible yet. Standouts include the [...]

After spending several weeks with There's No Leaving Now , I was really looking forward to hearing Kristian Matsson, aka The Tallest Man on Earth . Not only did I get to see him grace the stage, but the show was at Paramount, which is perfectly fitting for music of this ilk. Read on for more pics and comments from the set. Strand of Oaks opened the evening up perfectly, setting the mood, though somberly, [...]
