It is with four hours of sleep within an epic 48-hour period that I bring you the first of three reviews chronicling 2009's epic NIN|JA tour , a three band billing consisting of Nine Inch Nails , Jane's Addiction , and Street Sweeper Social Club. Nearly 20 years ago, me and some friends piled into a shitbox with a cooler of beer and some weed and headed to Mansfield, MA to check out a bunch of cool bands on this new festival called Lollapalooza. Yesterday, I piled into a different shitbox and made the same drive to check out Jane's Addiction and Nine Inch Nails , both of which were on that original 1991 tour. 1991. Not only was the last time Jane's Addiction and Nine Inch Nails shared the stage, but it was also the last time all four original (or most popular) members of JA toured together. This year marked the inaugural Lollapalooza tour, which was Jane's frontman Perry Farrell's design to send off his band in style. While on tour with NIN, Street Sweeper Social Club, the new band composed of Boots Riley and Tom Morello, got Trent Reznor to join them for a cover of MC5's "Kick Out Jam." While I might not be such a fan of this individual song, it's amazing to see a lineup of three contemporary pillars of rock and hip hop music playing together. Thing is, the sound of Tom Morello's guitar is like a bug zapper for bros, who are more or less only interested in #3. Ah, the cult of Nine Inch Nails. I can remember the hordes of "NIN" shirts roaming the halls in-between junior high classes like it was yesterday. As a 90's grunge kid, there was a lot of crossover into Nine Inch Nails. In a follow-up to a previous piece here at RE , in a move that can only be called genius, Rage Against the Machine guitarist Tom Morello has joined forces with Coup MC Boots Riley to form a new group called Street Sweeper Social Club .
