NIN|JA at Susquehanna Bank Center, Camden, NJ 6/5/09

As I stood outside in the cold, hard rain on Friday evening, I could hear Nine Inch Nails soundchecking their cover of "Dead Souls" as I gazed at Philadelphia's skyline to my right. It rained all night, and the water had seeped through my clothing. A little soggy, I took my seat four rows behind the pit for Friday's dose of NIN|JA . The view was spectacular; a solid vantage point for the carnage to follow. Though Street Sweeper Social Club played an identical set as the night before , [...]

NIN|JA at Camden Center, Mansfied, MA 6/03/09

It is with four hours of sleep within an epic 48-hour period that I bring you the first of three reviews chronicling 2009's epic NIN|JA tour , a three band billing consisting of Nine Inch Nails , Jane's Addiction , and Street Sweeper Social Club. Before I can adequately draw on the show itself, the story begins at 8pm the night before, as a friend and I got in the car, turned on some of our very favorite music, and drove four hours and change to the venue, arriving just around midnight. Though I [...]

Jane’s Addiction, NIN, Street Sweeper Social Club at Comcast Center, Mansfield, MA 6/3/09

Jane’s Addiction, NIN, Street Sweeper Social Club at Comcast Center, Mansfield, MA 6/3/09 Nearly 20 years ago, me and some friends piled into a shitbox with a cooler of beer and some weed and headed to Mansfield, MA to check out a bunch of cool bands on this new festival called Lollapalooza. Yesterday, I piled into a different shitbox and made the same drive to check out Jane's Addiction and Nine Inch Nails , both of which were on that original 1991 tour. It wouldn't be fair to compare the two shows, since Lollapalooza helped launch an alt-rock revolution and had a rarely duplicated energy. Still, signs of the original [...]

REVIEW: Jane's Addiction, NIN & Street Sweeper Social Club @ the Verizon Center, Indy – 5/30

REVIEW: Jane's Addiction, NIN & Street Sweeper Social Club @ the Verizon Center, Indy – 5/30 1991. Not only was the last time Jane's Addiction and Nine Inch Nails shared the stage, but it was also the last time all four original (or most popular) members of JA toured together. This year marked the inaugural Lollapalooza tour, which was Jane's frontman Perry Farrell's design to send off his band in style. Fast-forward 18 years later… the ever-changing lineup finally returns in original form to front the NIN|JA tour not only to commemorate the band's return, but this time to send Nine Inch Nails off in style. Opening for both bands is Tom Morello (Rage Against the [...]

Three Great Artists Together For One Performance

Trent Reznor Street Sweeper Social Club Kick Out The Jams
While on tour with NIN, Street Sweeper Social Club, the new band composed of Boots Riley and Tom Morello, got Trent Reznor to join them for a cover of MC5's "Kick Out Jam." While I might not be such a fan of this individual song, it's amazing to see a lineup of three contemporary pillars of rock and hip hop music playing together. If you didn't know, Boots Riley is the front man from political hip hop group The Coup; while Tom Morello is a Grammy Award wining guitarists formerly a member of Rage Against The Machine. Check out the [...]

CoS at Sasquatch!: Day Two

CoS at Sasquatch!: Day Two Bigger headliners, popular acts, and more comedians fill out Day 2 of Nick Traver's three-part series on last weekend's Sasquatch! Music Festival . Be sure to stick around tomorrow for his closing thoughts on Day 3, and please feel free to comment and even share your experiences, too! Night 2: It's odd how you're able to adapt to your surroundings. After only one night at the Gorge, you feel as if you are at home. Granted, it might be a little more smelly, but the people around you are in the exact same [...]

Sasquatch! 2009: Street Sweeper Social Club

Street Sweeper Social Club's stated message is to: 1) Feed the poor 2) Fight the power 3) Rock the [EXPLETIVE DELETED] out Respectable things, sure, and when delivering a radical message, it's always good to deliver them with a spoonful of sugar. Thing is, the sound of Tom Morello's guitar is like a bug zapper for bros, who are more or less only interested in #3. By making that reckless, sweeping generalization, alls I'm saying is that's a lot of sugar for this particular message; so much so that it probably would have been entirely obscured [...]

Street Sweeper Social Club Bring the Revolution to Spinner Headquarters

Street Sweeper Social Club Bring the Revolution to Spinner Headquarters Filed under: News , Exclusive A few days after rocking the cell walls of New York's Sing Sing Prison, Street Sweeper Social Club dropped by our office to play some tracks off their self-titled debut album. Tom Morello ( Rage Against the Machine , Audioslave ) and Boots Riley (the Coup) have come together to re-create and redefine the nearly extinct genre of rap-rock with a twist of political and social commentary. It's clear that Morello is back from the depths after listening only a few [...]

From the Closet: Nine Inch Nails

From the Closet: Nine Inch Nails Ah, the cult of Nine Inch Nails. I can remember the hordes of "NIN" shirts roaming the halls in-between junior high classes like it was yesterday. As a 90's grunge kid, there was a lot of crossover into Nine Inch Nails. Their two greatest albums, Pretty Hate Machine & The Downward Spiral , got constant rotation in my CD player on the drive to school. Today, I present my favorite song from The Downward Spiral and one that tends to get lost in the shuffle of " Closer " and " Hurt ", the bass heavy "Piggy". [...]

Tom Morello and Boots Riley form Street Sweeper Social Club

Tom Morello and Boots Riley form Street Sweeper Social Club In a follow-up to a previous piece here at RE , in a move that can only be called genius, Rage Against the Machine guitarist Tom Morello has joined forces with Coup MC Boots Riley to form a new group called Street Sweeper Social Club . I can't tell you how excited I am for this: Boots has always been a lyrical hero to me and a storyteller par excellence, add that to Morello's funky wa-wa guitar playing and we may just have a winner on our hands. ( [...]

Street Sweeper changes name to Street Sweeper Social Club

Less than a month after being introduced to the world , Street Sweeper , the new collaborative project of Tom Morello and Boots Riley, has apparently changed its name. So says tourmate Trent Reznor via Twitter : Wait...what? No word on the reason behind the change, but the new name does sure does add a more personal touch - after all, who wouldn't want to be part of a social club, [...]
