During a recent lecture at New Museum, New York as part of NYC 1993, Bobbito Garcia and Stretch Armstrong came through to talk about hip-hop from that year. Coming from two early hip-hop pioneers, this is a fantastic look at where the culture was during those days, and how different it was compared to today. The conversation ticks in at over an hour, and is moderated by Ego Trip's Sascha Jenkins. Check it out below and come back to let us know what you think.

MP3: Ol Dirty Bastard, Buddha Monk, 12 OClock - Freestyle (DJ Stretch Armstrong) 95 . The rap internet is remembering Wu-Tang's Ol Dirty Bastard today who died on November 13th, 2004. Above is freestyle from ODB, Buddha Monk, and 12 O'clock from the Stretch Armstrong Show in 1995 that I found threw mediafire and googling. If this is from your site leave a comment and I will put the proper link. ODB doesn't actually rap until about 6:45 minutes in but it is raw and worth it. Also peep: Egotrip's Post [...]

photos by Brook Bobbins In the Stretch & Bobbito world, mainstream was a four-letter word. ...For the eight years it ran, from 1 to 5 in the early hours of Friday morning, "The Stretch Armstrong & Bobbito Show" gave early exposure to artists like Jay-Z, Nas and the Wu-Tang Clan, who eventually went on to mainstream stardom. But for every one who made it, there were several who remained in the underground, happily or otherwise. [...]

It's ridiculous that anyone would read the New York Times for music coverage. Still the sad truth is that staff critic Jon Caramanica wields serious influence over the commercial hip-hop landscape, his master narratives weaving mittens for inept writers everywhere to handle trend rappers. So with another Grammy gala toasting mediocrity upon us, I thought it was a fitting time to eviscerate his write-up of last week's Stretch and Bob reunion show . In this latest attempt to canonize the trite likes of Lil Wayne, here Caramanica further proves that, along with MTV's Sway and [...]

Hip-hop heads (should) know the names Stretch Armstrong and Bobbito Garcia. But, if not, perhaps you can use this post as your introduction to two guys who held one of the genre's best radio shows from 1990 through 1998 on WKCR. During that time, "The Stretch Armstrong & Bobbito Show" acted as a proving ground of sorts for many of hip-hop's biggest and best acts, from Jay-Z to Big L to MF DOOM to Talib Kweli. And last Thursday, Stretch and Bobbito held a 20th anniversary/reunion show that featured a slew of live [...]

Before Valentine's gets into full swing, we offer up this audio morsel, courtesy of Dirty Waters . Taken from a 1997 radio broadcast, Stretch & Bobbito serve up two healthy hours of tasteful selections, low on the syrupy songs prone to making your ears hurt and the mind deject the whole concept of a holiday themed around a winged baby armed with a bow & arrow. Instead, these are heartfelt tunes from an age when even the loveliest of ballads boasted power and men sang with a little bass in their voices. [...]
If there's a reason I can sympathize with young cats who get excited when Earl Sweatshirt flips something dark and different, it's because I grew up tuning into Stretch & Bobbito. Talk about not knowing what was coming next: whiteboys who drop N-bombs; Kool Keith on hallucinogens; songs about masturbation; legends re-emerging to usher in new eras of uncharted creativity. Like I told Bob when I met him at Concepts in Boston last year: if not for his show I might be an investment banker right now. From what we understand, the "surprise guests" mentioned on [...]
