The pandemonium and mass confusion that accompanies the opening of a music festival, let alone one such as Sasquatch Music Festival where you park in a semi-organized fashion in random fields next to tents and cows, is akin to very few other experiences in a lifetime. The herding, the terror in the eyes of lost souls, the cattle brands... Well, there might as well be cattle brands because, let's face it, as much as we all enjoy a multitude of bands playing incredible music in one of the world's most stunning outdoor venues, organizing ourselves on a mass scale just [...]

photo by Brittney Bollay Allen Stone and his band were the first act on the mainstage Friday night, and without a doubt, they opened up Sasquatch! with a bang. Stone's set was 45 minutes of pure energy. He played all of the crowd favorites, including "Sleep", "Satisfaction", "Unaware", and his wonderful version of Bob Marley's classic "Is This Love". The backing band sounded tighter than ever – they played three quarters of the set with no breaks, using pieces of classics like Stevie Wonder's "Livin For The City" and Michael Jackson's "Thriller" as [...]

photo by Gerrit Feenstra For those of us out here at the Gorge, Memorial Weekend has started. Camping grounds are packed full of tents and cars are blowing their speakers on pump up tunes. Waiting in massive lines exchanging tickets for wristbands, we got to meet new friends and share our love for the bands we are excited to see. Inching closer and closer to opening time, the anticipation builds and excitement fills the air. It's no secret that Sasquatch! is a massive communal experience, but every year, the same joy of sharing those ecstatic feelings [...]

If you're lucky enough to be a part of the sold out 2012 Sasquatch! music festival, there are a couple of things you need to know and understand. Firstly, analyze and decide on the schedule. There will be conflicts with regards to which artists you want to see and when. You'll be able to find out schedules from the guides at the various booths, but plan ahead and get to the front of the stage by quickly checking below. You can catch performances which are happening simultaneously, but make [...]

The electronic trio plays the Casbah tonight // Follow Owl and Bear on Facebook and Twitter for contests, MP3s, and links that don't make it onto the blog.

Just back from their first, highly-anticipated European tour, the members of STRFKR have yet to unpack their luggage and adjust to the time change before hitting the road again. Starting tonight, STRFKR kick off their whirlwind 14-city tour with San Francisco's Painted Palms, playing multiple sold-out dates. After selling out both San Francisco nights, the band added an all-ages Oakland show, kicking off the tour which will end in Florida at the end of January. Check out the...

Not to sound too spooky or anything, but Halloween is currently in full swing and so are many of the bands I talk about here. I know, spooky right? But more than that, some are getting ready to tour, currently touring or about to release their best work for me to judge... don't worry, you can judge them too. And speaking of judging, Jesus Ween is also in full swing which is far creepier. But back to my original point, the bands I'm talking about specifically include Washed Out , STRFKR and Owen. Washed Out's new video [...]

About a month ago, I was at the Polyvinyl Records 15th Anniversary show in downtown Champaign, IL and I had a blast. It was the first time that Pygmalion Festival has done an outdoor stage and it turned out fantastic (I'm hoping they'll bring it back next year). I wanted to do individual reviews for each band but other things kept coming up that got in the way (computer crashing, this site being pharma hacked), and now too much time has lapsed since the event for there to be any hope I'd be able to recap all the greatness that [...]
HBO's best show, How To Make It In America premiered it's third episode of the second season this past Sunday. Just like we've done for the first two episodes, we will provide you with some of the best music from this one. Though a lot of awesome things happened in this most recent episode, in my [...]
Is 2011 really almost over? It seems a little early for bands to be planning tours for 2012, right? Maybe not. Though Strfkr have filled up the rest of this year with shows in Europe, they'll be returning stateside after the new year. The band's routing doesn't bring them around to New York City (yet), but we expect they'll be back here before long. Strfkr tour dates: Nov 18, 2011 - Club Control - Bucharest, Romania Nov 19, 2011 - Postbahnhof - Berlin, Germany Nov 20, 2011 [...]

(credit to venueszine for the picture) Living in central Illinois, there's not much going on in the cultural landscape that's worth mentioning, but Polyvinyl Records in Champaign / Urbana, IL has been a beacon of excellence since their inception as a fan-zine in 1995. This weekend, Polyvinyl is celebrating it's 15th anniversary with a huge concert on the closing day of Pygmalion Festival with a bunch of artists from their roster (including Braid, Japandroids, STRFKR, Asobi Seksu, Deerhoof, Someone Still Loves You Boris Yeltsin and more). In honor of the [...]
Washington DC - You've got to get past the name. It's juvenile. It's offensive. It's vulgar. Understood. But as soon as you accept Starfucker is… Starfucker… you will love them. And your love will only grow once you see them live. I was lucky enough to see the band at Black Cat on September 12 and they rocked my world. True to the indie-music genre, not one of the band members can weigh more than 80 pounds and they were all decked out in hipster-appropriate wear (including hand-drawn T-shirts, daffodil-yellow cardigans, and the ugliest grandma glasses [...]

New video from one of my favourites, Starfucker (STRFKR)! "Bury Us Alive" is one of my favourite tracks off Reptilians so it's nice to see a video for it, even if I had no clue what was going on during the entire three minutes and twelve seconds. Maybe someone can enlighten me?
Come see the awesome that is Day 1 of Bumbershoot! We've got all the highlights, from Mavis Staples to Vetiver.
