I've never really understood the phrase 'strike while the iron is hot'. What is the relationship between the action of 'striking' and an iron? I have ruled out the possibility that it is an old phrase used in order to gain motivation to do the ironing, as I am an experienced wielder of the iron and can safely say I have never struck any of my clothes with it, only smoothed or pressed. Maybe the iron in question is not the same utensil we associate the word with in the 21st century? Furthermore, the verb 'to [...]

Former-comedian and current has-been Jerry Seinfeld recently took to the press to make fun of Lady Gaga's love of press. Jerry went on a tirade in which he says he hates the Gaga, yes as deep as "hate," and that he is mad she was allowed in his section at the game when he wasn't there himself. Jerry, keep to your jokes and get out of things you know nothing about, like pop culture. Click below to read his tirade against the lovely Gaga. "This woman is a jerk. I hate her. I can't [...]

The Strike - Danger More Than Music Festival Columbus, OH 6/27/98 Cold winters, humid summers and The Strike. The most memorable things about Minneapolis. Download: The Strike - Danger (Live Video)

Meet Francis and the Lights, the latest breakout act from Weslyan University (MGMT and Santigold are also alums). Helmed by lead singer Francis Farewell Starlite, 'and the Lights' refers not to his backing band, but to stage lights, which are growing bright on this New York-based band. In a departure from the traditional label deal , Francis and the Lights formed a separate company, Francis and the Lights, LLC, to handle the band's business intersts. Normative Music's investment of $100,000 allows the band to maintain creative freedom while they develop their music and build a fan base. [...]
Carolina Wallin Pérez plays in or fronts literally half dozen groups in and around Stockholm. She has a solo record due out in the fall and a Kent cover available now as a single. But it's her group with Kristin Amparo Sundberg called STRiKE that I've got for you today. These demos are drum and bass, but not the techno version, it's really just drum and bass (and vocals). I imagine when/if they get fleshed out a bit they'll be a little more polished, but the energy is there and the song too. [...]

If you like the original Strike track "U Sure Do" (if you're not familiar at all, it came out fifteen years ago and scored majorly on the UK dance charts), you're absolutely going to flip out on all of the old school remix techniques that are employed in the remix done by fellow Union Jack, DJ Dunno . Bass heavy, jack beats, and lots and lots of audio samples and tools just sort of fidgeted into the mix on this one, which makes the not-even-four-minutes original into a nearly seven minute stomper. (mp3) Strike [...]

I continue to watch for signs of how the current Writer's Guild strike will affect the entertainment industry. This article , written from the NATPE Conference this week, focuses on a couple of potential developments. One possible change: "the death of the upfronts as we know it," predicted Matt Seiler, president and CEO, PHD North America. Seiler said the real business of buying and selling ad time actually takes place in advance of upfront "extravaganzas." Distributors and advertisers have to think differently about future relationships, [...]
Earlier this week, Patrick Goldstein wrote an open letter to Patric Verrone , President of the Writers Guild of America, west. Goldstein's main purpose seemed to be to urge the WGA to take the deal that the DGA signed with the studios . Right from the headline, the piece is flawed. In comments that I posted at the United Hollywood blog , I pointed out the problems: "Do the right thing, WGA," the headline reads, setting the tone that the WGA holds the power and it's [...]
In my latest Spot-on column, I take a look at the Writer's Guild strike and the role that writer play in today's entertainment and information environment. I ask the question: Do Writers Still Matter? Just this week, while listening to an NPR report , the host and reporter were discussing how the strike might affect upcoming awards shows and they joked about whether anyone wrote the banter for American Idol . Well, of course, that show and other reality programming employs writers. Reality programming is [...]
