Bickford is de man van The Strugglers . Het handjevol CD's dat de The Strugglers in de loop der jaren uitbracht is prachtig. De vocalen van Bickford gaven die CD's steeds weer een extra dimensie. Maar Brice Randall liet The [...]
North Carolina's Brice Randall Bickford has been releasing music as The Strugglers since 2001. I only have three of his tracks on my ipod, but for some reason they pop up regularly whenever I shuffle. I'm currenly redoing my iPod after ditching iTunes in favour of MediaMonkey (do it!), I have 3875 tracks loaded at the moment, and both of these tracks popped up on shuffle this afternoon while I was pottering about. The man obviously wants to be heard! Morningside Heights - The Strugglers [...]

Women / photo by David Greenwald Apologies for the tardiness, folks, but with some distance from the - let's just go ahead and say it - shitty trends that characterized 2008, I feel pretty good about the year. It didn't offer a lot of new classics to my ears, but it was a fantastic time for indie-folk (excluding Bon Iver: Shitty!) and new artists, or at least those who were fresh to me - I became a Hold Steady and Mountain Goats convert, and the debuts of Fleet Foxes, Women and White Hinterland, among others, have [...]

One of our favorite bands who we haven't heard much about recently, Koufax , just recorded a 3 song Daytrotter session. Head over to the Daytrotter site to download/stream all the songs . We've also got "Roll the Dice" which appeared on the band's 2008 release Strugglers . Horray Koufax! Download: Koufax - Roll the Dice (live) [MP3]

MP3: Koufax - Any Moment Now Koufax is back atcha with tales of class struggle, celebrity, parties, politics and flats ( or apartments as we call them ) on September's "Strugglers". It's awesome and like all of their albums, it sounds familiar while changing the sound enough to give you a new & unique experience ( this one has saxophones! ), though at one point you'll swear you're hearing a b-side from "It Had to Do With Love" on "Name of Love". A half hour later and you'll want [...]

You Should Know Hailing from North Carolina, Brice Randall Bickford has been making music under the moniker The Strugglers since 2001 and has released three full-lengths and an EP. His newest album, The Latest Rights marks his fourth full-length, and with the help of violinist Daniel Hart (John Vanderslice, St. Vincent) and a slew of other accomplished North Carolina musicians, the album's nine tracks are expertly crafted. Bickford is a bit vocally reminiscent of Mark Kozelek both in emotional pull and timbre, while musically the songs [...]

Brice Randall Bickford II + friends + Carrboro, NC = The Strugglers. It's all about location, right? Grab the finely aged "Goodness Gracious" and bask in a little Southern twang & steel guitar — warm, sad sounds, protective like an grown-up version of your childhood blankie. Like he sings in the song: "Don't you know what will happen with you staring at the world like this?" Or download "Morningside Heights," the poppy, wise opening track from the band's 2008 release The Latest Rights and get lost in the violin's reel from down South to [...]
(Editors Note: Well, it's almost time for SXSW and for once I'm going. So, over the next two or three weeks I'll be previewing the shows I hope to see. This list will be unlike anyone else's, which is one of the cool things about SXSW.) If you love the Mountain Goats, think Jeff Tweedy is godlike, and kill for Richmond Fontaine then you've got to hear The Strugglers ( here , here ). B.R. Bickford and friends make up The Strugglers. The new album features violin from Daniel Hart and contributions from [...]
Yeah, I know - too much talking, not enough music - isn't this a music blog? Well, ok - here's some stuff to tide ya'll over until I can some more time to work on this - I think I need guest writers to keep up any sort of regularity. Anyway, here's some of the awesomeness I've been enjoying this week: The Twelve Canons I just stumbled upon these guys the other week - it's like Nick Cave at some unholy church ceremony freaked on hallucinogens and trying to crawl up the [...]

If you wanted to raise objections to the music of the Strugglers, I could pretty much anticipate any critical move you might make against them: the pained tone, the confessional lyrics, the languid feel. But I find myself still loving this stuff. I first heard the Strugglers on the excellent compilation Songs for Another Place. They get extra points, I guess, for being from Carrboro, NC. Some singers have emotional reserve, and it's admirable; one senses the mixed feelings, the reluctance to give in to the full nakedness of singing. But this guy's voice is lovely in its discomfort, while [...]

Over the last year, the majority of bands I've posted about fall into one of four categories: They are from Sweden. They are from Vermont. They are from Brooklyn. They are a one-man band. The Strugglers fall into the last category. Brice Randall Bickford II has a rotating cast of musicians join him but he's THE GUY and hence, the band. I learned about The Strugglers from the Will [...]
