News Craig Hlavaty of the Houston Press recently conducted an interview with guitarist/vocalist Michael Sweet of Christian hard rockers STRYPER.
Stryper, the world's coolest and heaviest '80s Christian heavy metal band of the '80s, comes to Scout Bar Monday night, touring behind last month's covers LP, The Covering. It's an appropriately... Continue reading "Stryper's Michael Sweet: "God Formed This Band"" >

A brief period in the late '80s and early '90s yielded a fantastical number of cutting-edge metal bands. Today, fans of this pre-internet groundswell of proggy, arty, and otherwise undefinable bands can rejoice at the reactivation of Coroner, Anacrusis, and the great Atheist. But conspicuously absent is Milwaukee's Realm, once most likely to succeed among [...]
Like Axl said we're getting on a plane shortly, so let's make this shit quick. Some emo haircut band called D.R.U.G.S. (just typing that makes me queasy) sold a lot of records, and Devildriver and Darkest Hour did pretty well too. Numbers and commentary after the jump: Top Hard Music Chart 1 DESTROY REPLACE UNTIL [...]
News "The Covering", the new covers album from Christian hard rockers STRYPER, sold around 4,600 copies in the United States in its first week of release to debut at position No.
If you don't understand what that headline is a reference to, you've probably got the intelligence of the average fan of said band. And you probably believe in real-life transformers, characters from Street Fighter and the planet Nibiru. Elsewhere, Deicide had a solid first week while Motorhead and Crowbar had solid second weeks on the [...]

Stryper - The Covering Release date: February 15, 2011 Thus spake powerhouse vocalist Michael Sweet, via Untombed : The artist designed a character that represents the bad or "the evil" side if you will, in us all. The booklet, (in comic book style) will show the transformation of the character and the back cover will show him transformed. The message will be the transforming power of God's love.
Allan Horrocks and Andee Connors run Aquarius Records in San Francisco, CA. It's the best record store in the country, especially if you don't live right next to a record store and especially if you like metal. I interviewed them a few months back for the ongoing Taco Riff series, and figured they'd have a [...]
Derek Kerswill is the current drummer for the mighty Unearth, and has also worked with Kingdom of Sorrow, Seemless, Icepick, and, uh, Stryper. So I was curious to hear Tangents, his new, non-metal side project, 'cause, well, I'm always curious to hear the non-metal talented metal dudes make - it always feels like it gives [...]
The Metal Sucks staff may have more "-stein" and "-berg" surnames than the trading floor of a Wall Street investment bank, but I know Axl and Vince are open to exploring the entire spectrum of global faiths. I am sure we can also agree that music is the one common thread that unites all of [...]
When The Darkness hit the scene in the 2003, critics began braying about the "hair metal revival." Well, as it turned out that "revival" was pretty much confined to one band and, really, to one song. Once college kids got sick of shredding their vocal chords trying to hit the "I Believe in a Thing Called Love" high notes, hair metal slunk back to 1984. This is probably a good thing, though it
If the you young 'uns don't know Stryper, well, they were like the Underoath or Demon Hunter of their day. Which is to say, they played Christian metal. Their songs had names like "To Hell with the Devil," and "Calling On You," and for their 1985 album, they even covered "Battle Hymn of the Republic [...]

You can tell the crowd is anxious during set-up; they tire of waiting and start chanting " STRYPER! STRYPER! STRYPER! " The set lights up in a yellowish-orange glow, and Stryper finally gets on stage. Someone screams "I love you!" and Stryper lays into "Soldiers Under Command"; immediately fists are in air and you know it's going to be a good show. It's legendary Stryper's 25th Anniversary Tour, and it's the last show of the US leg, which is here in Portland at the Aladdin Theater . There's no spandex and not [...]

Our friend Allyson at Bring Back Glam has been reporting from Rocklahoma all week. She's obviously a big fan of the event, given that a) she runs a site all about glam and b) she wrote the text for the Rocklahoma coffee table book that came out last year. But she's been making (perfectly valid) complaints [...]
Filed under: News , Holy Hell Plenty of heavy metal musicians have dated porn, um, actresses, but Stryper guitarist Oz Fox is gonna one up 'em --the axman will marry Annie Lobért, a 41-year-old who used to be a high-class hooker. The couple met in February 2008, and will be married this Friday in Las Vegas. But here's the kicker: Stryper has always been a Christian metal band and Lobért is the founder of Hookers for Jesus, a Vegas ministry that aims to help victims of sex trafficking.
