There were goblins and ghouls aplenty on the streets this Halloween weekend. And most of them even wore costumes. But whether you were ghoulish by choice or by birth it was a good weekend to embrace the inner music monster and head on out to see some shows. Here's the results of all that show seeing. (Well, some of the results--the video posting people seem to be a little slow today.) So pull out some leftover Halloween candy and prepare to revisit…the weekend. Emery on Friday at the Monster + [...]
We're sad to report that Levi Stubbs of the Four Tops passed away on Friday at the age of 72. Stubbs' raw edgy vocals brought a sense of urgency to songs such as Reach Out I'll Be There and Standing in the Shadows of Love. Levi influenced many artists that came after him including Billy Bragg. For more on Stubb's legacy, be sure to read Greg Kot's article . Let's see what else is happenin' this morning... The live music universe is a world filled with ebbs and flows of energy; when things get busy, they really get busy and then there will be a down period. Suffice to say that in Chicago, right when that 90 day limit Lollapalooza puts on its performers finishes , October is busy. Everyone is touring. In addition, there have been a number of announcements of late pertaining to New Years Eve. So gathered here is a pretty solid compendium of who's playing where on December 31st. The venue link will get you to ticket information for the mentioned shows. [...]

STS9 just announced their fall tour dates and their plans for New Year's Eve in Atlanta (like always). The run looks pretty solid. The band is bringing along Pnuma Trio, Count Bass D, and Elliot Lipp for some select dates. They're doing Halloween night at Stubb's in Austin, then they meander their way to Thanksgiving with a break in between to get ready for NYE. Sound Tribe Sector Nine (STS9) has become an independent touring giant in recent years, selling out large venues such as the annual pilgrimage to the Red Rocks pavilion just out side of Denver, CO. They are a "must book" band for any of the major jam slanted festivals, and provide, to this date, the only live set of their kind amongst the others in their field that get lost amongst the menagerie. Peaceblaster is the band's fourth, full-length album, but is amongst a dozen or so live recordings [...]

Solesides and Def Jux have finally released new information about the long awaited The Mighty Underdogs album Droppin' Science Fiction . The hip hop group, composed of underground heavyweights the Gift of Gab , Lateef the Truthspeaker , and Headnodic , will drop their debut full-length on October 14. We also now know all of the special guests on the album. Based on the fact that the Underdogs' EP The Prelude featured collaborators on just about every track, we shouldn't be surprised by the list. Each week, dozens of songs and albums from up-and-coming (or just plain unknown) bands debut on the world's music charts. Some of these bands will never be heard from again; some may become the next little thing. That's why we have Chuck Eddy exploring the world beyond the Billboard 200, where he'll look for diamonds in the MySpace rough. This week out, he tackles new R & B, a few rock bands whose names seem like word jumbles, someone from the most recent season of The Real World , and a singer who dreams of winning [...]

Last night, Sound Tribe Sector 9 ditched their tour mates, Umphrey's McGee, to play a two-set show at the Higher Ground in Burlington. During the second set former Tombstone Blues Band bass player Mike Gordon joined STS9 for what folks on The Lowdown are describing as a funky improv. In other Mike Gordon news, WNEW [...] Last night, Sound Tribe Sector 9 ditched their tour mates, Umphrey's McGee, to play a two-set show at the Higher Ground in Burlington. With Sound Tribe Sector 9 and Umphrey's McGee set to kickoff the Northeast leg of their co-bill tour tomorrow we figured we'd preview the shows with a review of last week's Midwest run by Reuben of Partyin' Peeps . You can catch the STUM9 tour at the Roseland Ballroom in NYC tomorrow night, Philadelphia's Festival Pier on Friday and in Boston at the Bank of America Pavilion on Sunday. It is 4:06 a.m. on Sunday here in the windy city and we just got back from STS9's late night show [...]
One of the weirder collaborations at last weekend's Rothbury Festival was between Tenacious D's Kyle Gass and General Motors. GM sent Gass to promote their brand new GMnext initiative and he wound up creating a few hilarious viral videos with some of our favorite jambands including Perpetual Groove. The Shock Doctrine , as envisioned by author Naomi Klein, is a dystopia of compromised governments, national security overreach and corrupt multinationals hiding behind the veneer of free-market capitalism. "Shock Doctrine," the new single from California music collective Sound Tribe Sector 9's forthcoming full-length Peaceblaster ? Not so much. The Santa Cruz-based band released the digital-only single Thursday from its official site and as part of its self-owned 1320 Records podcast from iTunes. (The podcast also features 1320 bands like Count Bass D, Pnuma Trio, Collective Efforts, sub-ID, Jacob Fred Jazz Odyssey and LoPro [...]

Vegoose is kicking off this weekend but I'm not going. That is unless someone wants to buy me a ticket. And airfare and a hotel room, preferably the Venetian with a nice view, throw me some gambling money and cash for booze and so on. Don't really have the dough right now to fork out for that, and because I don't see any spontaneous acts of charity coming my way in the next 48 hours, all I can do is theorize what I would do if I was going. I looked up the lineup and boiled it all [...]

Add another one of my favorite bands to the ever-growing list of "bands/artists that produce their own podcasts" -- STS9 . Umphrey's McGee , Wilco and Tea Leaf Green have been doing their own podcasts for a while now and I'm psyched to see STS9 join in. They announced through their mailing list that they've posted their first podcast up -- a mix of live stuff and studio vignettes that many of their fans would not have heard yet -- and I can say that it's quite good for [...]
