pic I can't believe how silently this entered and exited this week's music news: The (sort of) return of Belle & Sebastian ! God Help the Girl , 'a story set to music', is a project dreamed up by Stuart Murdoch some years ago when touring Belle & Sebastian's album Dear Catastrophe Waitress . According to GhtG's Myspace page, the idea came to Stuart [...]

Frank Yang Even without the " NME Presents" endorsement attached to the tour, I suspect the White Lies / Friendly Fires / Soft Pack show at Lee's Palace on Tuesday would have been a sell-out. All three acts came with their own built-in buzz, so in fact the venerable British publication may have been counting themselves lucky to be associated with the tour rather than the other way around. Sole non-Brits on the bill, The Soft Pack - formerly known as The Muslims - were tasked with kicking [...]
Yesterday's post wasn't so much an April Fools prank but rather an out-cry of apathy from my part. Today, however, I've put a little effort in on getting you guys something more your time. In a story from Stereogum , Belle & Sebastian front-man and songwriter Stuart Murdoch made an open call for female singers to work on a project entitled God Help the Girl , accompanied by an LP of the same name. The record reportedly contains nine singers, Belle & Sebastian, and a 45 piece orchestra [...]

Last August, we first detailed Stuart Murdoch brand new adventure - with Belle and Sebastian on a hiatus, the Scottish frontman had hard at work on a musical entitled God Help the Girl . Eight months, a massive talent hunt, and some serious recording time later, Murdoch has finally completed his project, and come June 23rd will officially unveil it for all to hear. But we'll get to the details later. First, the fascinating ordeal behind the creation of God Help the Girl : [...]
Belle & Sebastian's Stuart Murdoch is set to release a solo project. God Help The Girl is due for a June 23rd release. The album is billed as "a story set to music". It features dozens of collaborators and a number of different vocalists. As you can gather, we've got art and a track list (complete with vocalists for each):Act of the Apostle - Catherine Ireton God Help The Girl - Catherine Pretty

Good grief this is like a gigantic great indie-kid wet dream. The short story: this has been put together by Bryce and Aaron Dessner of The National and released on 4AD to benefit the Red Hot Organisation , an AIDS/HIV project. From a musical point of view, you really couldn't ask for a better snapshot of this particular moment in independent music. It's phenomenal, from the amazing Feist and Ben Gibbard collaboration, to the gorgeous Iron & Wine, to all the other curiosities and unreleased gems they have managed to pull together. Compilations like this are usually [...]

Dark Was The Night is the upcoming stunning new double CD set from the Red Hot Organization and 4AD . Honestly, and I never say this about compilations, let alone double records, but this thing could well be my favorite album of the year. Dark Was The Night was masterfully produced (and I'm not just saying that, this thing really is a producer's tour de force) by brothers Bryce and Aaron Dessner of The National , and it includes contributions from the following impressive roster of artists: [...]

What is it that makes a song a classic? A few things that come to mind include distinctly piercing melody, moving lyrics and fully formed stylistic feel. Of course, I'm sure there are a million examples to disprove all of these above. But perhaps Belle and Sebastian principle songwriter Stuart Murdoch knows. After all, he's written a decent number of them, including "The Stars of Track and Field" and "Judy and the Dream of Horses". Who says those songs are classic? The universe does, that's who. Maybe it's because both feature [...]
According to Stuart Murdoch's diary , the new Belle & Sebastian album is about to go for mastering: I'm aiming to master all the "God Help The Girl" songs by the end of November. I think there are 18 of them. It's a good feeling to think about making records. Sleeves and schedules, running orders and what not. It's been so long since I did it that, I suspect the landscape has changed. Do you get the same thrill when you look forward to a record coming out? I suppose I must ask the youngsters [...]

our guest contributor for today is stuart murdoch of belle and sebastian ! most of you would know the title of this blog is borrowed rather loosely from the band's "i'm waking up to us", one of my favorite songs of theirs, so it's particularly apt that our 100th post is graced by stuart himself, sharing candidly about his daily routine and its accompanying soundtrack from a good twenty years back: every day when i leave the house and walk over the iron bridge and up to the glasshouses, i listen to [...]

i'm not sure how this one escaped me, but scottish band butcher boy 's debut album profit in your poetry is an understated classic, combining the bittersweet taste of glasgowian charm with the lyrical prowess of john darnielle. it was released last year on the how does it feel to be loved label , an offshoot from the well-loved bi-monthly london club nights of the same name that's featured guest djs ranging from stuart murdoch to stephen street. butcher boy's frontman john blain hunt has also been running club nights of his own - [...]

Belle and Sebastian are my favourite band ever. There, I've said it. I first found them back in 1997. It was at a time when I was actively looking for a band I could call my own. Up to that point I felt like every artist I loved had been fed to me by someone else, whether that was trawling through my dad's record collection and finding Bowie and Floyd; or if it was John Hunt copying the Beatles' 67-70 album for me (with the tape running out two thirds of the way through Across [...]
