I think Phoebe hit the nail on the head last night when she told me, "Never pick things up at night." This was while I was on my way home from Newport Beach, where I purchased a new turntable from somebody I found on Craigslist. I'm not lying when I say this, because I've never quite had this sensation before...but I'm pretty sure the guy I bought the record player from wanted to kill and eat me. If that had happened, I would have held all of you responsible. The night started out innocently with a phone call [...]

A beautiful concert and why I love Death Cab for Cutie: I thought about some introductory words, but everything sounded kinda lame, so I'll start with the concert right away. Styrofoam opened and t hat was really something. I just knew a few songs before and they started with one of them ('After Sunset'). I didn't know what to expect and was surprised [...]

Styrofoam is the name Arne Van Petegem uses when he's making music. I've been swooning over his sounds since 2003's I'm What's There To Show That Something's Missing. He recently dropped a new record called A Thousand Words , and it manages to be both more of the same wonderful Styrofoam formula and a refreshing departure at the same time. In a lot of ways, A Thousand Words is business as usual-there are requisite glitches and odd synths and distorted static sounds layered atop one another. There are two big differences from [...]

Belgium's Styrofoam are out on US tour supporting their new disc, A Thousand Words . They are being joined by Omaha, Nebraska's Broken Spindles for a night of laid back electronica. Regionally, you can catch them over the next couple of days. 6/02/08: DC9, Washington, DC 6/03/08: The Barbery, Philadelphia, PA mp3 : Styrofoam - After Sunset mp3 : Broken Spindles - Wake Up
When you reach the apex of the blogosphere, record labels and PR firms from around the world want to be your friend. They'll send you countless albums in the hopes that you will write positive reviews and help launch careers. Or, at the very least, you'll be too embarrassed to have your name affiliated with a certain soul-crushingly pedestrian bands and you'll get $3 in store credit from your local second-hand record store when you sell the promo just to get it out of your study or home office or wherever it is you choose to blog. This [...]

Ben Gibbard The song that began the Postal Service, amazing, and the remix is quite possibly even better! Nice acoustic version from a Ben solo performance a couple of years ago. Its been years since we got a new album from The Postal Service, and it looks like we're gonna have to keep waiting for a lot longer. In the meantime there have been a slew of electronic pop acts that have tried to build on what the Postal Service left behind, but most of those were just fleeting projects that never really took off. Now we get a Belgian artist called Styrofoam and the

I posted yesterday about Styrofoam's song "Couches in Alleys" featuring Ben Gibbard and have since listened to the entire album that song came from. I absolutely love it. Think a more industrially electronic version of the Postal Service, with a bit more energy, but the same style of singing for the most part. The best part of this album is the change of singers in nearly every song. The first song features some great rapping by Alias accompanied by the soft singing that dominates the album. Gibbard's song is the true standout, but there are [...]
French site La Blogothèque has been showcasing videos of indie acts the calibre of Okkervil River, Islands, and Jens Lekman, singing and gallavanting around the streets of Paris in a series dubbed Concert à emporter (Takeaway shows). Check out the above video of the four members of Grizzly Bear performing "Knife" acapella style. Also, a little late for the weekend, but here are a couple of tunes I recently rediscovered in the music library.. The World Provider - Valentine (featuring Feist) [Buy Buy [...]
