There isn't much I remember specifically about the late summer and autumn of 1980. We holidayed in Czechoslovakia and Austria, I despised school, my granny died, and I read English football magazines to brush up on my English skills. But I recall the vibe of that time, and these songs help conjure it. * * * Kelly Marie - Feels Like I'm In Love.mp3 Here's a great bit of trivia: Feels Like I'm In Love was written by [...]

What's more pointless than artists rerecording their old hits? Artists rerecording their old hits with arrangements that are exactly the same as the originals, right down to the mistakes. Styx has endured a lot of slings and arrows over the years, not all of them fully deserved. The band has frequently been disdained as vacuous arena rockers, bloated prog-dinosaurs, and even silly theatrical balladeers. Much of the reason for why their music is so divisive stems from the tension between original singer/songwriter Dennis DeYoung and guitarist/songwriter Tommy Shaw, who joined the band just before it began to embark on [...]

So, the clocks have been turned back, an act that still is an odd thing to me as I grew up in one of the few swaths of the US that didn't acknowledge such antics. (Paloma is like a ninja somehow resetting all of the numerous timepieces in the treehouse so swiftly, so deftly that I never see her do it, but the feat is accomplished by the time I awake) As the citizens of my hometown were ignoring the changing of the times in autumn, 1984, my friends and I had all reached our sixteenth [...]

With all the attention being paid to celebrating the legacy grunge bands this year, it's easy to forget that the early 19902s were also a true turning point for a genre that was previously known as college rock, but had been rechristened alternative thanks in part to MTV shows like Alternative Nation and 120 Minutes. Among the bands that found themselves suddenly gaining new fans, which included a young Scotty B, thanks to MTV airplay was the Boston-based act The Lemonheads . So, just over a month left of living in Jasper before we start to head out west. A bit of stress is starting to sink in as the comforts of a sparsely populated town will turn into a few million. There are probably more people that live in certain apartment buildings in Vancouver than in all of Jasper. Whoa. Mind...Blown... Here's what I am listening to right now. Photo by Heather Kaplan Here are three reasons why The Mountain's Goats' cover of Styx's "Babe" proved a premiere moment of Lollapalooza 2011: 1.) It's f'ing Styx! 2.) Though no more than three people in the audience appeared familiar with the 1979 Chicago-rock classic, John Darnielle and co.'s rendition dripped with sincerity and enthusiasm. 3.) That was except for the part which Darnielle declared the "worst" of the song. Thanks to You Ain't No Picasso for providing us with the mp3 download posted below! The Mountain Goats – [...]

The Mountain Goats pay tribute to Chicago by covering Styx's hit 'Babe' at Lollapalooza.

As we shared with you last month, legendary progressive rock bands, Yes , will release their first full studio album in ten years, entitled "Fly From Here. " We also shared with you the title song, which this week Rolling Stone has "exclusively" posted the final version but it is really the same song it has been for years, but never released officially. Stream the live version here or the Rolling Stone exclusive here . Nonetheless, Yes is back and they're sharing some snippets of the new [...]
Ohhh, this is always a fun game. Many people think that the best music comes from the year that they were born. Well, step aside every other year...1979 just took first place. I mean, how can you argue with the tail end of motown, the birth of punk, ska and hip hop with a bundle of classics wrapped into one year. I know I am forgetting some amazing songs (Pink Floyd, The Cars, The Ramones...Journey)...these are just some of my favourites. Enjoy! Free mp3: Clash - Train in Vain [...]
Having no older siblings, I had no older siblings to influence my musical tastes or to bequeath me their albums. My parents would play albums by Roy Orbison, Ray Price, and The Statler Brothers on the wood-grained, late '60s cabinet console stereo in the living room. The radio in the kitchen would be tuned to the station in our small town which was '70s light rock (and, by the '80s, country), but it was mostly for news and weather. The earliest memories I have of music is from hearing it on the [...]
It's always interesting me to parse together the inspirations inherent in every piece of music I post on this site, especially as I get older and the inspirations for musicians become closer to my own heart. On first listen The People's Temple seem to be mixing the paint piles of a slew of bands from [...]
To be sure, things seem pretty normal right now, don't they? The office-ice machine isn't holding you and your co-workers hostage; satellites, tanks, and Humvees aren't rolling around on their own; g

Having recently taken a stroll down memory lane, I have been hit with the memories of some of the classic albums that have changed my life. I could list the majority out for you, going a bit into each one, but I'd prefer to stick with the reason you're all here right now, to hear the word of the amazing album The Grand Illusion by the equally amazing Styx , and why I think it as such. For it is this album that is more steadfast in my memory then any others. It was their grand opus, [...]
