By 1984, the band Styx was arguably running on fumes. One of the most popular American bands of the late '70s, Styx had released the hugely successful album Paradise Theatre in 1980 which had become their only #1 selling album and spawned a pair of Top Ten singles in The Best Of Times and Too Much Time On My Hands . But, internal dissension within the band was building over the direction of the group's music. When Paradise Theatre 's follow-up, Kilroy Was Here , failed to match its predecessor's success, Styx guitarist [...]

some kids, just like their aged counterparts, are infinitely cooler than others. such is the case with 8 year old jack who we find rockin out to "should i stay..." with a full band no less. and leave it to said kids to make one feel even a older and less accomplished... when i was 8 you could find me and my buddy dominic spazzin out to the song below but instead of real instruments we used random household items and were forced to "sing" into the end of the antenna on our respective ghetto blasters. During the late '70s and early '80s, Chicago quintet Styx reigned as one of the most popular bands in America. However, during that time, the band had gradually shifted from a progressive rock band to a pop-friendly, arena-rock outfit. While the metamorphosis did wonders for their profile on mainstream pop radio and helped their album sales, it also splintered the band into factions. The division between the band mates over the direction of the band had reached a head during 1983 and Styx' tour to support their Kilroy Was Here album. Although the album was a [...]
Ahhh, April Fool's Day is here again and all around the world people are pulling pranks on their family, friends and co-workers. I've been part of pulling off a prank today and I've been the victim of a rather ingenious prank. So, my April Fool karma is about even I suppose. I seem to get the most feedback from the themed posts so I thought I might as well throw a few songs into a post and
Newark, Ohio Styx - Too Much Time On My Hands

My second scheduled vacation for 2007 has begun with the roar of a cantankerous lawn mower and the rumbling of thunderstorms headed this way. As the morning's yardwork has left me feeling completely thrashed and the potential for nasty motherboard-frying surges is limiting the time spent on the computer today, I figured I'd use this opportunity to give my answers to the "Name five to ten songs that have impacted your life" meme AC tagged me with. This was harder to compile than expected, as "significant" is a much different creature than "favorite." Most [...]

There were six of us, on the lawn, center stage pumped and ready to see Def Leppard perform at the Tweeter Center. The place was packed with fans and the energy was undeniable. Styx opened and I love them. I'm such a sucker for late 70s and 80s music. Styx has amazing guitar players, but James "J.Y." Young and Lawrence Gowan share the keys and so they are my favorites. =o) Oh my gosh "Crystal Ball" is just such an awesome song, I love it! And of course "Come Sail Away" which I [...]

...or does Jon Heder , currently appearing in the movie Blades of Glory , have a scary resemblance to former Styx guitarist Tommy Shaw ? I must have way Too Much Time On My Hands .

Although it's been available for a few months from Let's Go Sailing 's website , their debut album The Chaos in Order is scheduled to be released nationally through GR2 Records on March 27th. LGS originally formed back in 2002 when Shana Levy (pictured above) decided to strike out on her own after serving as the keyboardist for the band Irving . Having written some material of her own, Shana felt that it would best be showcased through the formation of a group of her own: Let's Go Sailing was born. [...]

DOWNLOAD: Styx - Mr Roboto (MP3) Yesterday someone compared My Chemical Romance to STYX in the comments . Today I noticed STYX are playing a benefit @ The Hook in Red Hook, Brooklyn, NYC. Don't go expecting any Mr. Roboto (actually, you probably just shouldn't go at all). RELATED: The 25 Worst Bands Ever: #10-#6
Skateboarding has seemingly always gone hand in hand with good music but recently things have become slightly ill in terms of the commercialization of the whole deal. Today’s youth have readily available pay-for-punk pushed on them from every direction; it comes from MTV, Hot Topic and even the once credible Tony Hawk video games. [...]
