Los Angeles songwriter, Blake Hazard, has announced a new solo album, The Eleanor Islands, available July 9. The Eleanor Islands is the first new music from Hazard since co-founding The Submarines with ex-husband John Dragonetti in 2005. The pair released three acclaimed full-lengths between 2006-2011. In conjunction, Hazard has premiered the video for first single, "Colonnade", directed by Simone Leuck, via SPIN - repost here. "The video plays with stereotypical representations of a female breakup and the glamorous leading lady in crisis," said Lueck. "Referencing the theme of duality and an imaginary man from the opening verse, Blake exists in [...]

Continue to check your Facebook news feed and feel immense jealousy for your friends that are there and regret that you are not there. 2. Throw away your phone for the day, sit back, and relax to this ultra chill playlist instead. If you're still reading, congrats on picking option number two. With the Olympics going on, I've been watching way more live TV than normal, which has given me plenty of opportunity to see which of the latest hip, indie tracks are being harvested for mass consumption via car, beer and cell phone commercials. So that brings us to another edition of my long-running Commercial Watch series, where I watch the ads so you can keep skipping them with your fancy DVR-machines. There's twenty commercials embedded below with MP3s / streams of the songs included. Make sure to click the continue reading link to see them all! [...]
Ever since the release of their self-titled, debut album, The Lumineers have steadily become more and more popular. Why? They understand how to make simple folk songs that are really good and extremely catchy. The songs ‘Ho Hey’ and ‘Submarines’ showcase the band’s tune crafting ability wonderfully. ‘Ho Hey’ starts off with soft, acoustic guitar strumming punctuated with cries of, ‘Ho!’ and, ‘Hey!’ The song builds quickly and by the end you’ll be stomping your feet and singing along. ‘Submarines’ is a piano driven track, with interesting lyrics referencing World War II fears of [...]
One of my favorite songs to cruise in the car to, Amp Live’s take on The Submarine’s “1940” experiments with hip hop and an all around chill attitude. It is simply one of those tracks where words do not do it justice, so I am forced to stick with “really, really good”. The original song is powerful, yet slow in tempo; Amp Live speeds up the pace to turn it into an extraordinary beat. While you may recognize Amp Live most as half of the hip hop group Zion I, he has truly taken off as a producer with a [...]

Pony Trash is the Minneapolis-based side project of Polica bassist Chris Bierden. The four-piece band recently dropped their debut single in the form of the shoegaze, slow roll "Submarine." The breathy, psychedelic-infused vocals are reminiscent of Pink Floyd's trippier material. The band has plans to release a 123 EP later in the year, with no concrete date in place. All of Pony Trash's four members maintain roles in a variety of other musical projects, indicating the inner-connectivity of Minneapolis' growing underground music scene. I keep stumbling upon more and more terrific sounds coming from this city. Female [...]
Here is a list of awesome things: I mentioned that The Lumineers set at Wakarusa was one of the best things ever - my best friend next to me so greatly enjoying herself was a highlight, too. I want to see this band over and over this year. These slightly re-worked songs are brilliant. The addition of mandolin/piano dude was a good one. A really good one (and he was a g'damn treat live, his excitement palpable). Same goes for bass dude. Chicks that play the cello are [...]
Guster takes fans on a chaotic ride during their acoustic show and prove that they’ve still got what it takes.

Even when the Submarines try to strip their material down, they still sound fussy and slickly polished. Under the Submarines name, married couple John Dragonetti and Blake Hazard sprinkle twee-ish melodies all over the sort of neatly-polished indie pop that makes it onto the soundtracks of television dramas like Grey's Anatomy (which it has). If the thick veneer of gloss could be peeled back a tad, the duo's songs might be more inviting, instead of feeling like elaborate store displays customers aren't allowed to touch. For the Shoelaces EP, the Submarines indeed...
This weekly show preview is a day late. This makes me very Twilight Sad because that was the show I would have told you to see. Because of this, I'm going to have make up for my mistake, and suggest even better shows than normal. So stick with me; this next week is going to [...]

Ra Ra Riot, The Submarines, and Papa get Santa Ana in the mood for a great weekend with their upbeat grooves.

by teepoo Here's your Sunday remixes. Hope you're having a great one! Ra Ra Riot- Oh, La (The Submarines Remix)
This is a stellar remix of one of my favorite Submarine song. It does what a good remix should always do- keep the feeling of the original while adding distinctive flavor. The addition of the xylophone and accordion (or is it organs?), as well as the accentuation of Blake Hazard's vocals are slight but powerful nonetheless.
