Water Liar's Phantom Limb was a great record last year that truly flew underneath many radars - and with a great follow up, the duo brings us Wyoming . They have taken to more experimentation this time around, all of it salted in a lyrical depression. This album could make a whiskey drinker out of just about anyone, with the way it is able to grip desolation and demise. Space is created in the songs, it makes an air about the stories they flesh out to find the truth behind them. All dripping with a certain sadness [...]
On California X's debut album, the band brings blaring guitar riffs and thunderous drums, but sometimes it can feel like there's some flavor missing in the songwriting department. WATCH THE REVIEW
It was a strong year for new releases, especially indie (which comprises the vast majority of my list). I could easily do a Top 80, but, alas, we have to make difficult decisions. Here's the first part of the All the Young Punks Top 40 for 2012. Nos. 11 through 40 are presented here in dramatic countdown fashion. 40. Craig Finn - Clear Heart Full Eyes . Great story telling by the Hold Steady frontman. 39. Eternal Summers - Correct Behavior. Instantly likable new wave pop music. 38. [...]

Next year, Yeasayer's Anand Wilder, Suckers' Austin Fisher, Delicate Steve's Steve Marion and producer Al Carlson will put out a record as Seltzer Boys, a project borne of the group's one-time live collaboration during a December 2011 stop at NYC experimental venue the Stone. In attendance happened to be pro snowboarder Lukas Huffman, who was so inspired by the project - even tracking down a live bootleg of the gig - that he came out of retirement to launch a video series called Snow Craft . In the series, Huffman depicts artisan snowboarders around the world and their adventures [...]
I originally bought this explosive, lo-fi Astrobrite cassette from Scott during the second night of the Beautiful Noise Festival at Downtown Performance Center in Tucson, AZ. The sound is incredibly dense and textured, and the 4-Track recording process only adds to the thickness and dramatic noise shifts. The original package included actual Atomic Fireball candies and featured colored xeroxed candy as the artwork. Everything was handmade; you knew you were buying something special, not just a demo. The 8 Candy EP (aka Sugarblast ) was a statement. I can [...]
Remember when we announced Suckers' new LP Candy Salad a couple of months ago? Well, the band isn't done yet! Suckers just premiered their brand new video “Turn On The Sunshine” on Stereogum. Featuring Das Racist's Ashok “Dapwell” Kondabolu as the lead character, this Suckers’ video is described as a “sort of ...
Suckers have a new video out now for "Turn on the Sunshine." It's taken off the latest album from the band, Candy Salad , and the video (which you can view above) premiered on Stereogum the other day.
Here's a new video from Suckers for the song Turn on the Sunshine off Candy Salad . That's Ashok "Dapwell" Kondabolu of Das Racist in the video.
Stereogum Suckers' " Turn On The Sunshine " is the sort of mild-euphoric/shambolic-pop nugget that the band nails at will, a standout from the Candy Salad LP released this spring. Its video is one for the memory banks as well, honoring the subtle and bright strains of psilocybin streaming through its heart with a handsomely hallucinating human who's finding joy personified (and choreographed) in his bacon, OJ, and Suckers Brand Cereal™. The part of the handsome hallucinator is played by Ashok "Dapwell" Kondabolu of popular art's [...]

And so we run feature/show pic stories back to back, what? No big deal. After the Lost In Austin session, Suckers decided they might as well play a set at Red7 . We all decided to entertain Ryan and Nathan's bromance by attending and I took some pics, naturally. I am still trying to warm up to the inside stage at Red7, my biggest gripe now being the lights. I missed Boyfrndz [...]
Nathan and I were just discussing the other day when it was that we really got into Brooklyn based experimental pop group Suckers. We think it was way back in 2009 when we sent out an email interview to the band for ACL fest and then left very impressed with an amazing live show from the upstart band . From that point, Suckers has landed on year end lists for music , appeared on award's lists for performances during SXSW , and eventually played our SXSW show this year . All this culminated in [...]
