For about two and a half albums (plus a double album worth of bsides), Suede were one of the most interesting and exciting rock bands in Britain. Not only did they release a string of too-catchy-for-words singles, but in the overblown yet tremendous Dog Man Star they release one of the defining albums of the Britpop era. Soon afterwards of course they descended into a repetitive and cliched joke of a band, both lyrically and musically, and sadly there was still nothing exciting when Bernard Butler and Brett Anderson reunited for The Tears project. Brett Anderson's recent album [...]
Why a picture of the Munros, you ask? Well because I would like to tell you about a pal of mine called Colin Munro. I first moved up to Glasgow in 1994, after an horrific year of culture shock in Manchester. I came over to the UK for the first time in 93, after an Austrian upbringing, and things were tricky at first. When I left Manchester I decided: bollocks to being friendly, this time I'll just keep my head down and do what I want, and once everyone gets used to me then they can [...]

This is the inaugural post of a new feature I call Listening Post. It is analogous to and partly inspired by Heather Browne's Monday Music Roundup over at I Am Fuel, You Are Friends . I'll try to post one of these at least once a week.
In the last day or two I've been going back and listening to my Suede CD collection. A lot of this has to do with the review of Brett Anderson's debut solo album I read on Twisted Ear , and some of the comments Graham made there. Suede, their self-titled debut album saved me from the ever-advancing crush of grunge, alterna-metal and Blind Melon (blech!) that seemed to be pillaging its way through the dorm rooms of my university residence. Brett Anderson and his axe-wielding foil, Bernard Butler were the natural [...]
The best thing about the previous decades is that over time, the dust has settled and a select few are crowned as the best. Now either this is yet to happen for the 90s or the talent was a lot more spread, because looking at my list of must-include bands, I'm gonna need at least 4 episodes. This also isn't helped by need to categorize my episodes, thus including bands that may not be must-includes yet fit perfectly into a category, such as in this week. It is a celebration of Britpop – where a new brand of music (really [...]

Americans, that's London Suede to us (incidentally, has anyone ever heard of the US Suede?). Via Uncut: Brett Anderson has announced dates for his first ever solo UK tour, where he will debut material from his forthcoming self-titled album. His first solo album is already gaining rave reviews - Uncut described it by saying "we get acoustic guitars, lush string arrangements and the previously cagey Anderson pouring his heart out." The first single "Love Is Dead" will be released on March 12 and will come with four different B-sides. CD1 includes [...]
Back in early 1992, much of the UK music press were getting hugely excited over the emergence of Suede. They remain (I believe) the only act ever to grace the cover of a weekly paper - in this case the now defunct Melody Maker, before they had released any records. Strangely enough, the debut single - The Drowners - was a comparative flop, barely scraping into the Top 50 in May 1992. But give

Who: Suede What: One of many Suede shirts I got that were released during their tour supporting Dog Man Star . When: I bought it in 1995 when I drove down to see Suede in Atlanta. I left the show with a ton of autographs, having met and hung out with the band backstage (after the show they shared some pizza and Red Stripes). Why: I've always had a real problem with calling Suede "The London Suede" . In fact, I've never called [...]

So I didn't quite make it back for a Halloween post, or even a post-Halloween post, but that's just because I've been terribly sick and away for the past week. But now I return with an ingeinus idea from that crazy cowboy Jimmy Dean! Pancakes & Sausage ON A STICK! Finally! I know I'm not the only one who's looking at this with a drool dripping mouth (and that's not just from all the phlegm in my lungs... or is it?). Tomorrow I will begin my quest to find these babies. And as usual, here are songs [...]

(photo by annieA ) Suede. Ugh, right? People who were 18-20 when Dog Man Star came out eulogise the Butler/Anderson lineup and wet themselves when the Tears came out, despite their failing to live up to any expectations whatsoever. But Suede. Ugh. Suede was that band circa 1996 that had some OK singles, but when you bought the album (say, Coming Up) it was just rubbish. Brett Anderson's a whiny, annoying frontman, and the little bit that Bernard Butler did add soon vanished after his departure (partially recaptured in his interesting, if not utterly captivating [...]

It's apparently as well as, rather instead of, The Tears, as Brett Anderson prepares his first solo album : if this endless waiting is frustrating for you ,imagine what it is like for me. i would dearly love to put the record out tomorrow but i know it wouldn't be the right thing to do. i am having trouble staying sane during this period to be honest so please don't imagine i have ever drifted or that i am anything than 1000 % committed. we're trying to carefully lay the right foundations to support and [...]

I gotta change things up for a post. I know things here are usually the standard 3 chord garage beat with the occasional soul thrown in. Lately I've been having a little "high school renaissance." The fantastic Pulp reissues came out and I started going through my itunes library and remembering the good ol' days. Those carefree, happy high school times when I ate the NME and Melody Maker for breakfast lunch and dinner. My friend Don ate them for snacks as well. He worked in the local record shop [...]

“The Asphalt World" by Suede * which clocks in at 9:25 I'll never forget the first time I realized the ability of olfaction to elicit memories. I was eight years old and upstairs in my room. My mother was downstairs in the kitchen making cookies but I wasn't aware of this right away. I was just chillin' and playing with some Transformers and Legos until the sweet smell of cookies in the oven wafted upstairs, grabbed me by my nose and carried me halfway down the hall. Then I paused. Something [...]

Sometimes it's nice to come back to music that's familiar to you. I've been listening to so much new music lately that I think i needed a nice break this weekend. So i decided to stay up all night and make a little mix, and as you can see it's very Britpop influenced. Eh, who am I kidding it's completely Britpop. There's stuff here from bands who aren't exactly british but I still consider it Britpop anyways. At one point this is all I would ever listen to, a [...]
I love Suede . Loved, anyway. But I always preferred Bernard Butler to Brett Anderson . I could watch him play guitar for hours. One of my regrets is that I never saw him play with Suede. The first time I saw them was on the Dog Man Star tour by which time he'd left. And as good as Richard Oakes was, he was no Bernard. Didn't have the flair. No panache. Didn't swing and stomp enough. Was too much of a carbon copy but one where they'd got a [...]
