Sugar Minott - Hard Time Pressure On October 18th, 17 North Parade will release Sugar Minott's Reggae Anthology: Hard Time Pressure , highlighting his illustrious recording career that bridged three major eras in reggae: from Studio One to lover's rock and to the digital dancehall era (where he earned the moniker Godfather of Dancehall). The late singer, producer and sound-system engineer made an inevitable mark on the genre with over 60 albums and cherished anthems including "Herbsman Hustling," "No Vacancy," "Good Thing Going" and "Never Gonna Give Up Jah." The double-disc 36-track set [...]

Jamaican pioneers The Tennors came along just as the frenzied pace of ska music began to slow into the syncopated drum and bass centered groove of rocksteady. Rocksteady replaced the horn-heavy ska sound with a greater emphasis on vocals, which proved to be the perfect vehicle for the Tennors' talented core of singers. In the back of a taxicab in 1967, they won over Studio One arranger Jackie Mittoo with a version of "Pressure and Slide"—a song that sampled from the Stax Records' single "Ain't That Loving You" by Johnny Taylor. "Pressure and Slide" became the [...]

Here's a fun stocking stuffer. I recently bought Super Cat's great early LP, Si Boops Deh! (Techniques, 1986--not to be confused with the lesser Boops! ), which features a wonderful cartoon rendition of Cat passing out money to all of his gal friends on the back cover ("boops" being Jamaican slang for "sugar daddy"). The artwork was signed "Limonious", and when I Googled the name I found The Wilfred Limonious Archive , which is a wonderful collection of the 100+ album covers designed by Limonious that so mark the style of '80s dancehall records. On the [...]

I just got back from a long vacation in miami/key west only to read on pitchfork that dance hall/dub pioneer Sugar Minott passed away last weekend in Kingston Jamaica. It was sad news indeed, especially since I'd gone through a big phase of that genre in the past couple years, of which he was a major part. I highly recommend his compilation album Dance Hall Compilation Showcase Volume 2 , which was on constant rotation in my car all last summer. The compilation features 4 of his dance hall "hits" followed by the [...]

A couple days late on this one, but I only just found out that dancehall pioneer and all around Jamaican legend Lincoln Barrington "Sugar" Minott passed away this weekend of a heart attack at the untimely age of 54. In memorium here's a Sugar tribute to another late legend; a cover of a very early (1971!) Michael Jackson track, We've Got A Good Thing Going , along with bonus dub. Sugar Minott - Good Thing Going [...]

Legendary Jamaican vocalist Sugar Minott has passed away yesterday, 54 years old. Guardian has an obituary . It was during this period that Minott earned a reputation as a pioneer of reggae's dancehall style, in which he would lay new vocal tracks over original 1960s backing tapes instead of using a live band. Other artists had done this in live performance, but Minott brought the technique into the recording studio, triggering a revolution in Jamaican music. His efforts helped to boost the fortunes of Studio One at a period when the company was reeling [...]

Anza-Borrego Desert State Park is named after 1700s Spanish explorer Juan Bautista de Anza (also the namesake for the Juan Bautista de Anza National Scenic Trail ) and from the Spanish word Borrego meaning Bighorn sheep. With 600,000 acres that include one fifth of San Diego County within its borders, Anza-Borrego is the largest State Park in California, and after New York's Adirondack Park, it's the second largest one in all the continental United States. Rest in peace .

Our condolences to the friends, fans and family of reggae superstar and dancehall legend Sugar Minott who reportedly passed away yesterday at the age of 54. His new album New Day was set for release on 21 July. No word on cause of death, but he had been suffering from a heart condition diagnosed back in May that prevented him from making scheduled appearances. This song, "Rub-a-Dub Sound", produced by reggae superproducers Sly & Robbie , was released in 1984 & is considered highly influential to [...]

No, folks, I have not given up on this blog. I sincerely apologize for not living up to this blog's name this year. You'd think at least one post a month would be easy enough. For various reasons that I won't bore you with, I just wasn't able to. My second job has taken up so much more time this year than it did last year. Which is a good thing...extra money is always good. It seems in today's economy you either are out of work or you are working more for the same [...]
