A tip of the titfer to Cousin Cole and Pocketknife for this sweet little video promo for their forthcoming album, Tambourine Dream. As well as our favourite doomed sisters, it features tastes of the duo's graceful remixes of Iron and Wine, Nico, Panda Bear and The Boss. Flagrant Fowl is like a less-proggy Beyond The Wizard's Sleeve and everything we've heard from them is gold. Tambourine Dream should be out by the end of October.

Thirty years after their initial release, I was finally introduced to the band Suicide and their self-titled debut album . I can either beat myself up for not knowing about them for thirty years or be glad that it wasn't thirty-one years. Not sure which to go with yet. Suicide was a two man band with Alan Vega singing while Martin Rev pumped out the beats and synth keys. Here are the two things that struck me about them. 1) This album could have been released last week and the [...]
Suicide have had a quite a bumpy ride all told and yet are clearly an influential band, surviving many guises and I actually have a number of tracks that I would love to post. Alan Vega and Martin Rev have been pushing the boundaries of electronic music for a while but haven't moved from cult to legend whilst some of their counter parts have, themselves never really passing into the pop echelons. Of course the ones who did (Depeche Mode) made millions and then some didn't (New Order). I've realised that I haven't posted any New Order and [...]
Hilly Kristal was Googling, and re-Googling, the name of his club. "See, now it says [number] matches," he said to the woman sitting across from him. He tapped the screen a couple times, let his finger slide down. This was October 29th, 2006, two weeks after Patti Smith and her band and her guests and a room full-to-bursting with well-wishers stopped by for one last stomp on consecrated ground. Places have power. If you don't believe that, then you've never gotten close to the bathrooms at CBGB's. The awning had been pulled [...]
Today was the big chili cook-off at the Beverly Hills Farmer's Market. You're going to wait until tomorrow (isn't that the refrain of Silverchair's first single?) to hear all about it. If I had two describe it in two words, I will say, "Tears. Hair." I'm sure you will be waiting on the edge of your seat for my description of the event. Yes, there will be pictures. No, they are not good. RULES for uninitiated noobs : With 100MB of webspace, I give birth to a weekly Mix Tape to be deposited on your iPods [...]
Hey there. Tomorrow show last night (I know that doesn't make sense to you) was fun. Everyone was there. If you weren't, you're a nobody. Also, I was privileged enough to met a few more new people, all of whom were very nice. Except that one guy. God, what an asshole! Today I drank some booze and watched a lot of baseball. Lazy days... Hey, here's a mix tape. I scored a lot of this material from Steve, in return for his spending the past week raping my entire CD collection and my portable hard drive. [...]
By now everyone should be sick of this Virginia Tech nightmare, so I offer this interesting tidbit about how the media helps propagate similar copy-cat crimes and murder suicides by flooding their stations with this type of news. taken from here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/C opycat_suicide The Werther Effect – Following the 1774 publication of Johann Wolfgang von Goethe's The Sorrows of Young Werther, readers began to imitate the protagonist's behavior. They not only copied his peculiar style of dress, but also emulated his more extreme action of suicide. In 1974, sociologist [...]

pic courtesy of here Trains are interesting things. I have this reoccurring dream about a train. I've packed my bags, bought my ticket and am waiting at the station. But the train never comes; I wait and wait but nothing. Finally, after waiting so long I decide to take a nap, only to wake up later to see the train leaving the station without me on it. I quickly get up, grab my bags and proceed to chase the train. I run hard [...]

I very rarely get the opportunity to combine my love of old punk rock bands and comic book superheroes in a single post. But with the release last week of the latest Nicholas Cage vehicle ("vehicle"... get it!!), Ghost Rider (which managed a whopping 27% overall approval rating over at Rotten Tomatoes), it seems that my time has finally come. Well before the advent of Hollywood blockbusters based solely upon the spectacle that is CGI technology, New York City's Suicide wrote this little homage to Marvel's own leather jacket wearing, motorcycle riding and, um, "head-on-fire" skeleton anti-hero. [...]

With the run up to the show this past week (and I thought I'd give you all a bit of a respite before I roll out the big recap), I haven't had the chance to discuss some stuff I've been enjoying, both old, new, and new to me. Making up for it in a cluster, here's five... These New Puritans - "En Papier" These New Puritans continue to impress , even if their relative blog invisibility makes finding their songs a bit [...]

Well, the truth is I don't really have any choice. I'm off to Las Vegas this weekend, so heaven will have to wait. Of course there are those who equate Las Vegas with heaven, but I cannot count myself amongst them. I have never visited Vegas and, truth be told, it would not even bother the nether end of my "100 Places To Go Before I Die" list. Indeed, the only reason I'm going is to attend a work-related conference (if any of you do locate a Las Vegas conference calendar, let me assure you that the Credit [...]

Here are the mp3s as promised last week, if you checked out part 1, you can just skip down to the songs... hope you find something you like. I've been a fan of magazines since I was around ten or eleven years old. And most of my magazine money over the many years has gone towards music mags, my first subscription to a music magazine being Rolling Stone. But this was back when RS still had some bite, I think it was around 1974 when it began showing up in the mailbox. Now the [...]

Who knows what evil lurks in the hearts of men? The Shadow knows, and based on today’s track, the members the pioneering synth/punk band Suicide know as well. “ Frankie Teardrop â€, from the band’s self-titled 1977 debut album , is a ten minute and twenty-five second journey into the heart of darkness. Frankie is a young factory worker whose world implodes into a nightmare of blood and violence. It’s an old narrative, and one repeated in countless folk, country, and blues songs. Here, set to a muted, throbbing synth line and punctuated by harrowing shrieks and [...]

I know alot of other sites do semi-regular covers features, and so far I've been resisting the urge. Now, in the steamy home stretch of summer, I fear the tension between me and cover versions is just too great to deny. I can't take all these longing gazes, sleepless nights, and petty arguments springing from nowhere, any longer. While common decency won't let me do this on a regular basis, I need a release. So here, in an abundant, unthinking burst I give you more cover love than you can possibly handle. Hopefully things won't [...]
Digitalism have never really blipped up on my radar (xxjfs2 has had them on his for a while) in the past - so-so remixes of stuff, ok-ish solo things that didn't really grab me. They just seemed...
