If you are looking for an early pregame to your most likely Halloween-related activities this Friday night (and you reside in the Tri-State area - or serendipitously happen to be visiting the UES ), stop into to the Manhattan branch of the Asian Society for the premiere of Live From Tokyo - a documentary focusing on Edo's chaotic indie music scene. On any given night in Tokyo, there are hundreds if not thousands of bands thumping the pavement playing small venues in the interest of pushing indie music's sonic [...]
H.L. Mencken said,"I reserve the right to be a lonely man." I don't crave companionship. It stands in my way. I live for pleasure. There are few persons who can give me as much pleasure as those acts I perform myself. I would rather create pleasure according to my own whim than be subjected to [...]
Sorry I forgot to post this on Sunday! RULES for uninitiated noobs : With roughly 100MB of webspace, I give birth to a weekly Mix Tape to be deposited on your iPods or Zunes or Kingklangs or whatever the industry is currently pushing on you. Sometimes there will be themes that link all the songs together, other times I'll just throw songs at a wall (not literally) and see what sticks. This week includes a couple live cuts (Will Oldham, Yndi Halda), and a bunch of randomly selected tunes. The final track was recorded by [...]

Suishou No Fune - Till We Meet Again (You Returned Home To The Heavens) / A Rose Bloomed / You Look At The Night Sea I started to write about this awhile ago but then got distracted and wrote about Sun Circle instead. Totally forgiveable, right? Especially because I'm doin' it now. I mean, it's not like I totally forgot about it or anything... I've never heard Suishou No Fune until The [...]
Nicci's workplace had their annual Christmas Party at Malo tonight, which meant a couple hours of heavenly eating and drinking. Right now I am full of carnitas, potato and eggplant tacos, beef and pickle tacos and chicken/chorizo quesadillas. I could not be happier. If that restaurant wasn't so expensive (or maybe if I had a better-paying job?) I would eat there every night. Well, not every night - I'd need to eat at Qdoba and Casa Bianca and Patra, too! Hey, how about a mix tape? RULES for uninitiated noobs : With [...]

Perhaps not surprisingly, the New York Mets Mess lost last night to the Anaheim Angels. So begins the Jerry Manuel era...No further comment will be necessary at this time. Matt alerted me to this irritating article published by the Wall Street Journal, about how Disney runs their "Tween Star Machine" . It's one of the most frustrating articles I've ever had the displeasure of reading, and hopefully you will feel the same should you choose to peruse it. I'm not disappointed about the references to how Disney is scurrying to develop a new [...]

suishou no fune the rain falls 2008 (française version) Comme le temps annoncé pour les jours qui viennent se confond avec le morceau de Suishou no fune, après avoir lancé les dés, je vous conseille de filer directement au bonus... (englikhtonian version) As the weather announced for the coming days is to be merged with Suishou no fune's track, [...]

Another ghost trail out of the Japanese psychedelic scene; Suishou No Fune's ambitious apparitions lap at the edges of space and time, leaving listeners delightfully stranded in the stratosphere. Prayer for Chibi is ambitious to say the least, spanning two discs with most tracks coming in around the 15 minute mark. This release pushes the psych-spiritual connection to new heights with chant-like vocals resting on a bed of echo-dipped guitar while tone ringlets ebb and flow through drones like serene waters crashing into sudden walls of restrained fuzz. The mood swings from mantra-like incantation to frantic [...]

In a move reminiscent of, well, just a couple months ago, I drank way too much last night. Lauren and Nick extended a very nice invitation to eat some of their fancy vegan food last night, and since I'm not one to turn down free anything, Nicci and I happily accepted a fine array of pasta, kale, beets, salad, asparagus, mushrooms and fancy olive-packed bread into our bellies. Also, I had a couple Knob Creek drinks, including one which was magically transformed into a mint julep! Before leaving, I grabbed a plastic cup and poured some more Knob into it [...]

Official band photo Suishou No Fune Sir Richard Bishop not only delivered one of this year's greatest albums, but also without doubt the best album title. As a title While My Guitar Violently Bleeds is profoundly ambiguous in a sense that it does not merely refer to a full-blown, aggressive guitar bashing sound, but all the more – and definitely so in Sir Richard Bishop's case – to a profound passion that pores from every note played in an almost spiritual way. The title alone is good enough to dedicate two mixes to it, [...]

* Suishou no Fune : Hikari Ahureru (30.0 mb) From Akatuki : Tour CDR A week or two ago, I was perusing the local weekly when I stumbled upon a listing for one of my favorite, currently performing, Japanese psychedelic band, Suishou no Fune . I was super psyched because I had no idea that they were even touring the US. And, as an added bonus, they were playing an incredibly small venue that could hold at best, 50 or so people. [...]

• A catastrophe is approaching, people! Repent! Repent! Information Liberation reported on the 27th of August that an entity or individual is betting on massive dislocation to occur in the market before September 21st, to the tune of $4.5 billion. The same type of bet was placed six years ago on all the airlines which were targeted on September 11th, 2001, but information was never released as to who placed that bet. According to the website, "clearly someone knows something big is going to happen before the options expire on Sept. 21." They go on to predict either a massive [...]

SXSW 2007 list. Yes I know it's over. but I just had time downloading the songs to make lists. This one is the nicest so it goes first. It's a late nite list with consistent sound, very sexy, and bunch of post-rock in each section. I would post more info, were it for not having a chance to carefully look at each artists webpage. But at least the list nice. Enjoy. "I. City of Love " 01. Dislike - Alone (Ufa, RUSSIA) 02. Slot - [...]
