Not a bad week at RSTB when two of our most anticipated singles of the last couple of months come striding in and meeting expectations along the way. Sun Araw – Sun Ark 7" As usual Cameron Stallones comes wafting in on the last vestiges of peyote wrangled psych comedown and if these shimmering waves of ectoplasmic good will aren't enough to set you in the mood to float its time to reassess your priorities. Both sides provide [...]

To christen his new batcave Sun Ark Studio, Cameron Stallones a.k.a. Sun Araw has released a new 73 of the same on Not Not Fun. The A-side "Bump Up (High Step), with it's live lo-fi sampling feel, sounds more like Ferraro-led projects like Matrix Metals or Lamborghini Crystal than his previous dub-revisionist space voyages or romps with Vibes. Surreal airspace haunted by disembodied funk loops, woodwinds, karaoke mantras, blasting organ stabs, and random FX solutions. Side B's "Live Mind" is more traditional Stallones, with a busy high-end preference that recalls his Boat Trip 33 from 2008 [...]

DOWNLOAD :: Sun Araw - "Live Mind" - [ MP3 ] In regards to the album, NotNotFun says: "Left coast karaoke machine enthusiast Cameron Stallones leaves no loop unturned in his endless questing for the ultimate kaleidoscopic island-psych cocktail, and relocating from the LBC to Glen Rock (half Glendale, half Eagle Rock) freed him up to construct his own hermetic jam cove – dubbed Sun Ark Studio – thereby ratcheting up his workaholic-ism several levels. And so this Sun Ark 33 RPM single serves as both [...]

Maybe half a year ago, I was stunned and outraged to hear that one of my new favorite bands, Pocahaunted , was breaking up. The "Olsen Twins of drone," Bethany Cosentino and Amanda Brown, fused psychedelic drone with spooky chanting to the tune of about a release a month. Not all of those CDs/cassettes/vinyl were groundbreaking, but they were rarely uninteresting. Then the well seemed to dry up. From those ashes, though, have sprung two sublime bands. First, would be the resurrected phoenix that is Pocahaunted. Though they go by the same name, the group is hardly [...]
"THE SUN ARK IS A SICK ARK. LEAN BACK." Sun Ark is the new 7" from cosmic explorer Sun Araw, out now on Not Not Fun. "Live Mind" is the dubby, hazed b-side, which the label calls "a cool new boat trip on an evolved vessel." Not convinced that's a metaphor, as this literally sounds like a leisurely excursion through some dank space jungle on the aforementioned futuristic ark. Edition of 500, all... click through for more...

2009 was the year of lo-fi/glo-fi/chillwave/etc. You are probably even exhausted from hearing those terms. I sure am. I am not tired of the music (yet) however. I really love how a ton of the bands that are on my year end list weren't even on my radar last year. It is just really nice to see more people making it. ( most of that has to do with the almighty gorillavsbear ) There aren't going to be many surprises but here we go... My favorite albums of 2009 [...]
Really quite glad my iPod is really old w/ shit battery power cos I was getting soooo sick of my short attention span and never being able to settle on a song to listen to, wheeling through that thing for many a bus/train trip to find the "right song". No fun at all! My walkman is good like that; choose one tape, get lost in it. EASY. Naturally there were plenty of amazing cassettes to get lost in. Also I am really glad that Alt-Vinyl exists in Newcastle. SEE BELOW: [...]

Cameron Stallones sent over this swampy, psychedelic scuzz-out from his non-Sun Araw/Pocahaunted project, Magic Lantern. The group's aptly-titled new full-length, PLATOON, should be here in a month or so, with Stallones promising "energetic moon-cone wipeouts" and "thigh-quaking sweatfests." This is definitely one of those (not sure which): mp3: magic lantern :: dark cicadas (excerpt) ******** click through for more...
Topaz Rags Sounding like the perfect accompaniment to an old-school detective movie featuring lots of nudity, this track packs such an uber-atmosphere it leaves a thin trail of cigarette smoke behind it, with its emotional and haunting jazzy-blues shuffle painted in almost shamanistic colors. There's definitely an influence here from fellow Californians such as Pocahaunted and Sun Araw , in that awesomely vamped Echo Park sound. Topaz Rags - Sightings ( mp3 )
Mental Groove is releasing Sun Araw's extremely limited new Geneva Hits cassette, featuring live versions of "Heavy Deeds," "Horsesteppin," and a cover of Neil Young's "Barstool Blues," recorded @ l'Usine in Geneva over the summer. Listen to the tape here; only 50 copies worldwide though, so chances are it'll be gone before you get over there, or you may be able to score a copy at one of Sun... click through for more...

On their most-recent record Monster Head Room Ganglians became the first indie-rock band I've heard that truly, truly ACTUALLY SOUNDS LIKE THE BEACH BOYS IN THEIR PRIME (and that goes for Brian Wilson solo and the ACTUAL BEACH BOYS since their prime). With the comparison being thrown around so much -- and confusingly directed at bands like Beachwood Sparks and Sun Araw [...]

2009 has shaped up to be quite a year for HT faves Blind Pilot . The Portland-based act have logged a lot of miles on the road over the course of the last six-plus months with headlining tours, festival appearances and holding down the opening slot for a number of big name bands which include the likes of The Decemberists, Gomez and the Counting Crows. Showing no signs of slowing down, Blind Pilot will head out yet again for another round of dates with a two-month run that kicks off on October 9 - with The Low [...]
![[New MP3s] Meth Teeth, At Swim Two Birds, A Grave With No Name, Sun Araw](http://cdn.elbo.ws/posts/2018089_lg.jpg)
Meth Teeth are based out of Portland and there sure doesn't seem to be a hell of a lot written about them. From what I've gathered they began as the one-man folk project of Mattey Hubele and Kyle Raquipiso later joined the band. So, a two man band I guess and they sure as hell can make quite a bit of noise. 2009 sees the band release their first full length Everything Went Wrong . There are only a few traces of folk here but what is evident throughout is some well executed lo-fi garage pop/rock. Touches of pop [...]

in a wonderland they lie, dreaming as the days go by, dreaming as the summers die: ever drifting down the stream, lingering in the golden gleam. life, what is it but a dream? monopoly child star searchers : prince of parrot shooters skaters spencer clark fifth generation magnetic tape floop and jungle clatter glued together by ethnicky twinklings and terry riley's beard twine. it jumps and scratches like some arabesque psychedout godard musical. it sounds like the mental wheezing of cheap whistles, recorders and [...]
