MARK KOZELEK, DAVID BAZAN (Aladdin Theater, 3017 SE Milwaukie) Witnessing Mark Kozelek of Red House Painters and Sun Kil Moon performing under a giant illuminated cross inside a Texas Presbyterian church (during South by Southwest) was an odd feeling to say the least. Looking like hed ditched his notoriously prickly behavior and sinning ways, Kozelek seemed humble, if not downright vulnerable, for the first time in his nearly 20-year career. Much like the greatest icons of the singer-songwriting stablefrom Elliott Smith to Tim Hardinthere was also something unapproachable about Kozelek. You didnt want to have a beer with [...]

not sure why it took me so long to actually sit down & listen to april , the new sun kil moon album that came out a few weeks ago...maybe i knew that when i did, i'd be set in some sort of melancholy haze for most of the day...there's something about those slow & soft fuzzy guitars that mix perfectly with mark kozelek's mellow croon that just takes me out of it...granted, this one isn't quite as accessible as 2003's incredible ghosts of the great highway , & the absence of a couple heavier, catchier [...]

A whole host of new albums have come out in the last 2 weeks and here's a sampling of some of the better tracks. Cloud Cult - Feel Good Ghosts: Tea Partying Through Tornadoes Cloud Cult 's been around for a while and had some minor indie rock hits a couple years ago with the release of The Meaning of 8 ("Chemicals Collide", "Pretty Voice", "Take Your Medicine") but their followup seems to be a step forward into [...]

[ photo source / site ] Sun Kil Moon - "Heron Blue" . This is a list of predators: vultures, panthers, elephant seals; wolves, jellyfish, asps; sharks, hornets, hawks; winters, springs, summers; doubts, clouds, years; no-signal, ice-cubes, knots; pinpricks, splinters, frays; mouths, and rows; and loss; and cold kitchen floors. [ buy ] Nick Drake - "Place To Be" . If you are in the habit of reading horticultural handbooks, you will know that some plants grow only in certain places. (Sometimes this fact is disclosed in botanical guides, too.) You're not going [...]

Folk-project Sun Kil Moon is not the machination of a certain North Korean leader, nor is it a violent battle between the leading figures of day and night. Rather, it is the beautiful genius of Mark Kozelek (it's actually named after Korean boxer Sung-kil Moon!), who you might know from his former band Red House Painters. Sun Kil Moon's third proper LP April really could not come during a better month. Aside from the not-so-coincidental similarity between the album's title and the album's month of release, April captures everything that early spring brings to [...]

How you enjoy Mark Kozelek/Sun Kil Moon is directly proportional to how you are feeling at any given moment. Once you're familiar with his low and fragile warble, you'll recognize it instantly. It's usually swaddled in downtempo acoustic guitar, very minimal production or percussion, clean fender strat-esque minimalist overdubs, and powerful repetitive structure. It'll flow like molten glass in the dark. If you're sad, it'll make you cry. If you're happy, it'll make you daydream. If you're tired, it'll put you to sleep. Or maybe it'll speak to you at a specific time and never again. [...]

Some albums remind you how crucial tone and mood are to the music creation process, and Sun Kil Moon 's latest April is one of those albums. The songs are intimate, hypnotic, and beautifully played with lush acoustic guitar, piano, and string flourishes. From the sprawling ten-minute epic "Lost Verses" that opens the album (and features Ben Gibbard on guest vocals) to the plucked acoustic greatness of closing track, "Blue Orchids", everything on April is drop-dead gorgeous. Sun Kil Moon is the current incarnation of Red House Painters, both led by singer/songwriter Mark [...]
I got very excited a couple of years ago when Mark Kozelek announced his album of Modest Mouse cover versions, Tiny Cities . A lots of critics dumped on it even before they'd heard it, but I quite liked the songs - at least initially. The big problem was that an album of slow acoustic finger-picking and melancholy vocals all starts to sound a bit same-ish after a while. Kozelek has the same problem here with his third album with Sun Kil Moon, April . And this time the album is over an hour long. It's [...]
I've been a little busy, so I am combining the past 2 weeks of releases into one post. My picks over this time include Los Campesinos!'s first full length Hold On Now Youngster and The Raconteurs' Consolers of the Lonely . I have never been much of a Jack White fan, so the later disc especially surprised me. Regardless of your preferences, there are plenty of quality discs to choose from. Enjoy! Los Campesinos! Hold On Now, Youngster ( Buy ) - " Death [...]

Sun Kil Moon - "Lost Verses" When a song nails the trick silence loves to pull: nothing but a dark calm, the kind you can swim, dive beneath the waves or float on your back with the sun, the clouds crossing the sky like a ritual - I wish the ocean really was that way, like I always imagine it, moving through the air, above my ears, and I have Kitty Pryde's superpower, Mark Kozelek's guitars, and those voices to listen to. What if your breath could be that steady? Does [...]

It's really hard to put Mark Kozelek 's songs into your own words. He's one of my favorite artists, but if you aren't into his music, it's hard to see the appeal, especially when his tracks are so personal. Kozelek speaks in the language of the everyman, but transforms those simple words into breathtaking prose. He isn't concerned with turning clever phrases, instead opting to express his emotions with beautiful words that sink into the even most jaded man's soul. So why is his name not uttered among the great song writers of our generation ? [...]
Another week, another set of new releases - with this week headlined by none other than R.E.M.'s Accelerate , which is currently sitting on my desk, ready to be listened to at some point this week while i'm at work. A few other releases that i'm anxious to check out include Sun Kil Moon's April , EPs from both The Electric Pop Group and Annuals , Mono in VCF's self-titled debut, and Yelle's Pop-Up . There's some other stuff that piques my interest, but [...]
Another busy new release Tuesday is upon us and we sample an array of artists and genres on today's program. As a long time of the Apples in Stereo , I'm very excited that Electronic Projects for Musicians is out today on Yep Roc . It's a b-sides and rarities compilation that spans ten years and several delightful albums. We get to a couple tracks from that, including "Stephen Stephen," a tribute to Stephen Colbert . Also, new music from The Black Keys, Sun Kil Moon, REM, and more. To [...]
