theo jemison Ras_G isn't from this world—he's just passing through, making music that connects to the cosmic righteousness of Lee "Scratch" Perry, Sun Ra and Dilla. His newest album—the double 10" Spacebase is the Place , named after the part of the world where you'll most often find him—contains the crushing bass-is-actually-the-place songs any Ras_G fan has been seeking on vinyl for years, and July's Down 2 Earth is a beat tape built on the rhythm of a city bus, with gentle starts and stops breaking up the (dirty [...]

Sun Ra "That's How I Feel" Revisited by Q3000 Q3000: SoundCloud •J• Tags: audio , q3000 , revisited , sun ra , that's how i feel
radioolio : Sun Ra, Brother From Another Planet Sun Ra and his Arkestra were the subject of a few documentary films, notably Robert Mugge's 'A Joyful Noise' (1980), which interspersed performances and rehearsals with Sun Ra's commentary on various subjects ranging from today's youth to his own place in the cosmos. Today's documentary, Don Letts' 'Sun Ra, Brother From Another Planet' from 2005, reuses some of Mugge's material and includes some additional interviews.

Yesterday on twitter we picked up a tweet that said "listening to "Sun Ra WXPN 1976 side A." After reaching out to this person, we were led to this site that had an archive of Sun Ra and his Arkestra on WXPN. Here's the description: On Christmas Day 1976, Sun Ra read a selection of his poems accompanied by music on the program "Blue Genesis" over the University of Pennsylvania's radio station WXPN. The choice of poems and their sequencing offers what Sun Ra thought was most important in his writing. Here are key [...]

One of my favorite things about Sun Ra is that the sci-fi presentation rarely tampered with the genuine jazz/r&b/whatever that the Arkestra was into at the time. The music always was made of good solid terrestrial elements. This one sounds like a groovy '50s party at the house of a man who on special occasions puts on the Christmas lights and sequins and jumps up on the table to describe his interstellar travels. Which is really something any good host should do. Sun Ra - The [...]
Why Moby never sampled this track will always remain a mystery. Sun Ra's "Door to the Cosmos", the centerpiece of his 1979 album Sleeping Beauty , provides that perfect entry point to Motor City Drum Ensemble's DJ Kicks mix, an effortless blend of jazz, soul, afro-beat and various shades of Danilo Plessow's signature deep house. The track, with its soulful gospel intro and the rest of its casual free-jazz, sounds like one of Sun Ra's more laid back efforts even whilst remaining entrancing as ever. That too mirrors the mix as a whole which works [...]

Cosmic tones from 1959 are the order of the day, and it just so happens we have some right here. Ancient Aiethopia come from Ra's album Jazz in Silhouette . This is the sound of the Arkestra before they went all uncompromisingly heliocentric, and while it's clearly experimental it's much easier on the ears than what would follow. A startling bit of music though, especially given the recording date. With Marshall Allen's spacy flute and a propulsive bass groove from Ronnie Boykins, this sounds like a mid-'70s classic. Great. [...]
A different and pleasantly nice mix from Onra for the Oki-ni series. He's opted to put together a collection of Jazz songs, though not done as a mix, as in one continuous mix, it is a nice break from the usual stuff you hear. Tracklisting: Black Classical Rap Rahsaan Roland Kirk Morning Worship Alice Coltran [...]
