When you've managed to cultivate the sort of cult status now renowned of Thurston Moore and you decide to veer off on some newfangled experimental tangent or other, there are two routes there for the taking: the tried and tested, timeworn path you've trudged down umpteen times in your threadbare Chuck Taylor's, or a screeching careening off into the unknown, perhaps never to be seen in the same esteemed light ever again. The burden of expectation will of course always weigh heavy on the onetime Sonic Youth stalwart, and his is therefore an election between a reverential honouring of the [...]
[Drive Through Oklahoma With Oneida] “Pretty much every road I’ve been on has undergone serious construction and it really… it kind of, um…debilitates my driving when there is just one lane open on a two-or-three lane road. The very small number of cars on a given stretch will pile up quickly. It handicaps my ability [...]

knew the fucker was in trouble and goddam i've been out the loop for a month or so but another passing that seemed to pass by without much fanfare. for me: part of that weird nexus where words and music and image and ritual meet. part of that (internal) elseworlds of bill boroughs and jack kirby, evel kneivel and stan brakhage, allen ginsberg and milton babbitt, charles gocher and philip k dick. huxley and hunter s. and lavey. explorers y'know. explorers... Another sweet WFMU Record Fair find. A sealed copy of this improvised live double LP (recorded in 1998 in a forest in Canada) set me back $25. Technically the full title is No Neck Blues Band Meets The Clear People with Mystery Gypped Live At Ken's Electric Lake , but that seems unnecessarily long to me. In short, it's NNCK with members of Sunburned Hand Of The Man. D.M. Edwards over at Pop Matters reviewed the CD reissue in 2008 writing, "Over the course of the two discs the few inevitable moments of dullness are [...]
On October 4, 1994 a fire destroyed a condominium in Morin Heights a popular ski resort near Montreal . Upon arrival fire investigators found two charred bodies in the wreckage. A quick check indicated that the building was owned by Jo Di Mambro, 69, officials anticipated that he would be one of the victims and [...]
It's weird to think that I like eating sushi now. Because for 26 years I thought it was horrible. Seriously, until a few months ago I thought sushi was no more than a vehicle by which food poisoning could enter one's body. It literally served no other purpose. The colors looked nice (sometimes), the seaweed reminded me of what fat women at the Jersey Shore got stuck between their toes, and the prospect of idea of raw fish seemed as appealing to me as slamming my dick in a door. And yet there I was tonight at a sushi place [...]

Kudos to me for finally finding one of the original numbered CDRs of this album, after years of giving up on trying to collect all the cool early Sunburned Hand Of The Man stuff. Yes, I really am that great. Well, no I'm not. But someone sold all their original CDRs to a local store and I was able to procure just about every one of them on the cheap. Magnetic Drugs is a wonderful and tight collection of aural goodies that will either demand your attention or bore you to tears, depending on your [...]

farewell and adieu to you fair spanish ladies, farewell and adieu to you ladies of spain, for we've received orders for to sail back to boston, and so nevermore shall we see you again. croaked old quint in jaws. and now dear readers it’s time for me to take out my teeth, flash my scars one last time and go hurtling knife in hand towards the gaping maw of that deadly great white… interesting as this writerly venture has been (mostly…), consider it somewhatofa psychological barometer of the past few years. for me anyway. [...]
Just a few tunes to whet your appetite before the big State Of The Blog Address, which will go live at 23:59 PST this evening. Enjoy these songs, I'll be back in a few hours to give my speech. RULES for uninitiated noobs : With roughly 100MB of webspace, I give birth to a weekly Mix Tape to be deposited on your iPods or Zunes or Kingklangs or whatever the industry is currently pushing on you. Sometimes there will be themes that link all the songs together, other times I'll just throw songs at a wall [...]

Spoilers Ahead : If you are not currently up to speed on all this LOST stuff - that is, if you have not completed Season 6 Episode 3 - you will not want to read the following passage, as I will pontificate and spoil many things for you. Anyone who did not like last night's episode is crazy. It might have moved slowly at parts, but last night LOST season six announced it's arrival. This is not to be a catastrophe like the start of season three, nor is it going to be balls-to-the-wall [...]

Last night Nic and I consumed what will inevitably go down as a top ten Los Angeles burger. The "Dry Age Burger" at Oaks Gourmet Market on the border of Hollywood and Los Feliz is quite good. Theirs is (obviously) dry-aged, topped with Taleggio cheese, smoked bacon and a sweet-tasting jalapeno-pineapple compote. I don't know if it will crack the top five, but it will be close. I still have at least three more hamburgers to taste that have won "Best of LA" honors on other blogs. Then I have to begin the process of re-eating most of the finalists [...]

Time to pay some dues here. Or: presenting some artists I discovered through the enthusiastic posts of fellow music bloggers over the past couple of years. So here´s a ten pack of pure gratitude, featuring soul from Terry Callier, Rodriguez, Shuggie Otis and Syl Johnson, folk from the Incredible String Band, country by Willis Alan Ramsey and Tom T. Hall (cheers Paul!), afrofunk by Segun Bucknor and more modern sounds by Wooden Shjips and Sunburned Hand Of The Man. And yup, I actually bought [...]

and it's not about the beards. although i'm pretty sure there's beards involved. it's not brown or beige or tank-fucking-tops or feedeldydeedledydeee. it's not getting into a debate on traditional or contemporary or post- and neo- and psych- whatever. no more hyphens. it is what it is. if dylan electric is judas then john moloney is satan. these songs sometimes are the sounds of tramps fighting in a music store, or acidfrazzled hippies mad streamofconscious chants or drunk scotsmen sobbing into beer or sadsadsad odes to serial killers. that said i could draw you the line from woodie guthrie to david tibet. i could but it's so twisted and fucked it'd blow [...]

Stream [...]

This is what we had for tea tonight. It was delicious. beaupepys had most of the fingers, but I made sure I got the wrist with the lovely juicy bone sticking out of it. I owe my cannibalistic inspiration to Megan of not martha . Thank you. I am now a confirmed fan of the long pig. Here are (of course) Sunburned Hand of the Man with Me & My Marrow from their great [...]

Glenn Jones Big Bear Proceeding chronologically with the recent shows I've been to (also saw Benny Nelson & Brandon Terzakis last night at Weirdo, review soon), here's a recap of what happened at the highly honorable Outside The Lines Studio , which, in case you don't know, is a gallery/studio space for adult artists with developmental disabilities. The place is a big warehouse that is overrun with art everywhere. Sculptures in every corner, paintings on every empty wall. Awesome, right? Even more awesome [...]
