In this edition: Indie labels rule the day today as Dad Rocks! has a great sophomore effort on Mount Modern , and we get to know the Sunderbans. As always, we have your weekly considerations and a mountain of new videos. Dad Rocks! - Mount Modern Dad Rocks! seems like a natural shoe-in for our house musician here at The Dadada. Last year's Digital Age was one of the best EPs (and debuts) of [...]

This weeks round up of the tracks that I haven't had the space to post... I'm Not A Band From: Berlin, Germany Gloomy electronic pop from Berlin the ancestral home of gloomy electronic pop. Black Horses sounds like the future. Go Try [...]

We were delighted to discover Sunderbans have a new EP, Wolf Heart due out today. The release succeeds the band's feature on Huw Stevens' Music Sounds Better With Huw VOL 2 compilation last autumn, and their brilliant debut 73 single We Only Can Because We Care released by Young and Lost . Inspired partly by the descent to insanity induced by the days and nights spent locked away in a Dalston cellar, the self-recorded and produced EP showcases the band's musical coming of age. From the sparse beginnings of [...]

Now that we've had the top tens from all the Mad Mackerel contributors, we will give you a definitive overall top ten in a couple of days. Before that is our penultimate top ten list of the year - the favourite new bands and artists that have come our way in 2010 which was perhaps the hardest list of all to compile. So with honourable mentions to Gaoler's Daughter , White Noise Movement, Pop. 1280 and White Dress , here we have our favourites. Hopefully we'll see a lot more of them all in [...]

As if you need a reason to get yourself down to Counter Culture again, the lovely girls at Young & Lost and combining musical forces with Hit Club and are taking it over for their Christmas Party on Wednesday 8th December and it sounds like it will be one hell of an evening with a whole host of live acts and DJs spinning the night away. Live in the two rooms they've got Get People , ExLovers , Fixers , The Van Doos , Entrepreneurs , The [...]

Hola! It's a big Wednesday this week as we bring you an OIW night like you've never seen before! In honour of the wonderful Superhumanoids being in the UK to support their "Urgency" EP (out on OIW Records ) we are throwing a B.I.G. party on the Thames for them before they jet off back to L.A. It all kicks off from 7:30pm on the Tamesis Dock in Vauxhall and any pirate or sailor-related dressing up is definitely approved of. Full details HERE . [...]

Well as if by magic as Mr Benn used to say...no sooner do we post a new track from the excellent Grass House than we also get a new track from their label mates The Sunderbans . Death Stalks The Forest is another top notch slice of classic UK indie - these boys really do know how to put a song together and this one maintains the promise and quality of their earlier tracks that got us so excited in the first place. The naggingly insistent bassline is in place, [...]

This year, one of MM's fave labels, Young & Lost Club have put out a whopping fifty singles. They are celebrating by whittling thirty four of them down to a compilation of the greatest hits and misses! And it is a cracker. The compilation includes Noah & The Whale , Vincent Vincent and the Villains , Larrikin Love , Johnny Flynn , Bombay Bicycle Club and many, many more bands that have gone on to success, fame, and maybe even fortune. In fact, few people can claim to [...]

"The DIY movement is about using anything you can get your hands on to shape your own cultural entity: your own version of whatever you think is missing in mainstream culture. You can produce your own zine, record an album, publish your own book - the enduring appeal of this movement is that anyone can be an artist or creator. The point is to get involved." - Amy Spencer's 'DIY: The Rise of Lo-Fi Culture' . Here are some more of the brilliant bands that you'll be able to [...]

Lots of stuff to put into the goody bag this week! I aptly named it the Spring goody bag since Spring seemed to have started earlier this week. Not anymore though, today was drizzly and cold, as ever. Anyway, onwards to more exciting things than the weather! 1. longtime favourites of mine Born Ruffians have just released a track from their forthcoming second album Say It for you to download for free. I really like it. It's still Born Ruffians, yet a bit different and [...]
Sunderbans are one of my favourite new bands right now. So much so that I wrote an introduction piece for Faux's upcoming March issue. Sunderbans' debut single 'We Only Can Because We Care' is out next week. To promote the single the band produced a video, as bands do these days. To hear more about the band check out my write-up in Faux, which is out March 8th (in print and online). Coincidentally that's the same date as 'We Only Can Because [...]

All in all a pretty good month, actually a very good month, for new music - here are some of our favourite tracks from February. Put them on a mix and impress your friends... Dan Sartain - Ruby Carol mp3 One man revival of perfect, greasy rockabilly. U.S. Girls - Red Ford Radio mp3 Sparse, repetitive, claustrophobic. Brother Dege - The Battle Of New Orleans mp3 [...]
I know we've done a lot on the Sunderbans lately (click here for the music downloads), but they've dropped us a line to say the video for the brilliant single We Only Can Because We Care , directed by Nicola Probert is up and running... We Only Can Because We Care from Sunderbans on Vimeo .

Watching a band evolve is one of the more enjoyable facets of Indie life. It's proud parenting for those of us who haven't delved into the real and complicated world of family life yet. Look at Los Campesinos!, for example. As their career progressed, I've experienced unbridled, novel, joy (their first, dazzling, frantic releases); anxiety at their bratty teenage years (when the once-fun Tweecore sound became grating); and finally, most recently, joy and pride again as maturation has arrived in the form of their new, brilliant, single, Romance Is Boring . [...]

The Sunderbans have proved a popular post on MM, and so here is the b-side to the brilliant forthcoming debut single We Only Can Because We Care and as a little Friday bonus here is another top-notch track we discovered from what are rapidly becoming our favourite new band. Pre-order the limited edition single from Young & Lost Club here . Download Sunderbans - Life Support mp3 (from We Only Can Because We Care 7") [...]
Last month we were introduced to the rather wonderful Sunderbans via the Young & Lost Club series of free singles (btw, well worth exchanging your e-mail address for), and their excellent track Road Kill.No sooner have we posted that, then the band announce that their debut limited 7" titled We Only Can Because We Care, is scheduled for release on March 1st. The band take their name (not
There seems to have been a plethora of tunes that have caught hold of our ears and not let go over the past few days and weeks. Here for your listening pleasure are some of them. We're short of time for one reason and another so have been a bit lazy and nicked the press release copy where it actually seems to fit with the music! No matter - four beauties for you today.First up, Jason Boesel's
