Well, I haven't done one of these in quite a while. A rather long while. Ever since I went away on that vacation-thing. But I've settled comfortably back into this blogging routine, so there's most definitely no reason for me to come back around with a recap of my favourite tracks I wrote about during the course of the week. But considering that it's been a while, I won't limit myself to the usual five suspects, and instead list all my favourite songs since the last Rated Ox I did . [...]

If you're anything like me and love the band Annuals, then you should be more than excited to hear Sunfold, the music of Annuals' lead guitarist Kenny Florence. It's hard to describe Florence's sound as it sometimes sounds like vintage Annuals, while other time it sounds nothing at all like his main band. Everyone that backs him up on the album are from Annuals, so some of the things that made Annuals so unique are all over Toy Tugboats , but what surprised me most was the unique sound Florence has successfully achieved despite having everyone in Annuals still [...]
Sunfold is a reconfiguration of North Carolina indie band The Annuals. In this version of the band, guitarist Kenny Florence takes the helm. Florence uses Sunfold as his outlet for expressing himself with different genres in a freewheeling sonic exploration. Over the course of Toy Tugboats , Florence moves through jazz-influenced songs ("To Wake The Eye") to Frampton/Floyd prog rock ("Gnosis") to banjo-driven ditties ("Shapeshiftin'") to electronic beats ("Gorgee de Rubis"). The listener is even treated to a luau lounge act on "Osk". Sunfold is at it's best, however, when the harmonics of [...]

An old university friend of mine was one half of a pair of identical twins. He used to tell me that he often was bothered by the fact that his twin would always want to do and be interested in the same things as he was. When he developed a taste for Pirate peanut butter cookies, his brother curiously developed a taste for Pirate peanut butter cookies. When he took up guitar, his brother took up guitar. When he became a Montreal Canadians fan, his brother suddenly became a Montreal Canadians fan. You get the [...]

Sunfold (Annuals alter ego) new album Toy Tugboats is an energetic excursion in ten episodes, scratching limbs with folk, pop, rock, and jazz along the way. Dreamy afternoon tales with the guitar chorus on high open the album with "Oregon," breaking through to the see-saw rhythms of "Shrinking The Sphere." Then, comes album standout "Sailed Off To See," a rustic piece filled out with nice pedal steel, a great afternoon mood, and best pick me up in terms of chorus. The lights go down for the smoke filled jazzed out slumber of "Gnosis," working out the nighttime [...]

Luis Cuauhtemoc Berriozabal Garden of Rocks (Kendra Steiner Editions, July 2008) "Once dreamers too,/the dead, out of time,/are buried like seeds,/safe from the lightning bolts." As I settled in for the lengthy car ride with the family to our annual camping trip, I pulled out one of the newer chapbooks from one of my favorite publishers Kendra Steiner Editions . It was the latest offering from Luis Berriozabal called Garden of [...]

Annuals Re-Shuffling is Masterful : New album dances the fine line between musical genres This one's in Stores Now Sunfold makes beautiful music. This has to be the best release week this year and this month has already had some good ones. The albums that are out this week, are all just so amazing that it would be a disservice to choose a few to tout over all the others. The electronic rock aficionados will be happy to know that there is plenty to choose from this week, but they do not dominate the entire list. Make your way down the list and try to listen to them all, because I guarantee that you will be seeing many of them again when end [...]
There were quite a few albums released this week worth checking out… First, if you're a U2 fan, the deluxe editions of Boy, October & War have dropped and all feature an extra disc worth of rarities, alternate mixes and previously unavailable tracks. All the albums have been remastered and sound better than ever. I'm in love [...]

Contest: 3 prize packs of Annuals "Wet Zoo" EP and Sunfold "Toy Tugboats" Surely you must've felt the magic of Raleigh, North Carolina's Annuals on their latest EP " Wet Zoo " by now, how about looking at the same band from a different angle? Taking over leader position is Kenny Florence, whose approach through Sunfold is more of a controlled and formulaic thought process, deliberately applied to different musical styles. [...]
