Rarities For those of you who actually come to this blog to read posts rather than just hijack music, you've probably noticed my affinity for folksy acoustic music. While I obviously enjoy the aforementioned genre, I feel I've misrepresented my tastes as being too one-dimensional. One of my other soft spots will always be for early emo music. There is something in its unbridled messiness and off-key singing that really appeals to me (I've probably listened to each Mineral album in excess of a thousand [...]

Emo came rather late to me, around July of 2001. By then, most of the bastions of the old guard ha lost much of their luster or were already sent to the industry scrap heap. Mineral's supposed deal with Interscope had fallen through, The Get Up Kids had traded in the art of synchronised jumping in favour of acoustic guitars, and MTV was starting to take notice. But there was something about those pre-millennium emo albums that was just a notch above the chasing pack. Maybe it's cause they do sound like they are often [...]

Division Day have been together since 2001 when Ryan Wilson, Rohner Segnitz, Seb Bailey, and Kevin Lenhart formed a band in Santa Cruz. Their new album Beartrap Island comes out on Eenie Meenie Records digitally on Sept. 18th and in stores October 2nd. In anticipation of the release of the record the band are doing either a remix or an exclusive cover each week. They start with this over of the Sunny Day Real Estate song called "Every Shining Time You Arrive" the original version of which appeared on their 1998 [...]

OK, so here's a brainteaser to pose at the next party you go to... Question : How can you have a debut album that has two different release dates a year apart? Answer : If your band is named Division Day , you've signed over to Eenie Meenie Records , you've recorded a couple new tracks to add to it, and you're re-releasing it. That's right, previously released in 2006, Division Day's debut full length album Beartrap Island is getting [...]
It started in the rowhouse alleys of Baltimore like most afterschool specials: couple of carefree young folks walking home from guitar hero practice. Tommy whips out a copy of the Thrushes’ Sun Come Undone that he ripped from his older brother’s hype machine stash. Reginald runs home, Carl’s not so sure about this, but they spark earbuds and before you know it, A's in World History and Basic HTML Programming are becoming B's and C plus pluses. Away messages are peppered with Nietzsche quotes, Loveless posters plaster bedroom windows. Dinner table conversation is sparse, forks scrape absently; sarcasm [...]

It's been rather dry around here, unlike in London, and on Sunday the most beneficial thing happened. A storm system lodged itself directly over where I live and it rained hard and steady until early afternoon. When I checked the radar to see what it was doing, it was churning and turning in one place, moving exceptionally slowly. A bit unusual for these parts, but not entirely unpleasant. As a matter of fact, it made for great reading weather, and by the time you read this, I'll know what becomes of Harry Potter and [...]

I remember, and it's not good.
Song: Black Friday Rule Artist: Flogging Molly Album: Swagger Comments: This is probably the most famous song about Jason Vorhees killing spree at Camp Crystal Lake. Essentially it explores his unofficial coda of "If it's Friday the 13 th and your a camp counselor you must die!" Song: Death on Friday Artist: Adolescents Album: OC Confidential Comments: The Adolescents wrote this song for an episode the television series [...]
Way before what teens today think of as emo, the term was shorthand for emotional hardcore. It was not a dirty word that referred to the lifestyle that gets so much negative press these days. Originating in the Washington, DC music scene of the mid-1980's, some so-called "first-wave" emo or emocore bands included Rites of Spring, Embrace, and Moss Icon. Then came Fugazi (featuring ex-members of Rites of Spring and Embrace), Jawbox, and so on from there... This is (according to me) a brief history of emo in music only. Yes, it will be incomplete in some [...]
Sunny Day Real Estate was formed in 1993 from components of other bands in Seattle, Washington. At a time when the music industry was looking towards the dreary Northwest for grunge and alternative groups, Sunny Day seemed to fit the bill. Their melodic guitars, unintelligible lyrics, and tendency to name songs with numbers (see songs "8", "5/4", "47"...you get the idea) somehow missed the big fame wave that Nirvana, Pearl Jam, and others were riding, but the band had their own following. The original band consisted of Nate Mendel on bass, drummer William Goldsmith, and guitarist/singer [...]

(Jawbreaker at Gilman Street, sometime in the early '90s; photo from San Francisco Audio ) When did we start referring to old school rap as old school? I mean, back in the ?80s, ABC rhyming/boom bap/high-top fades/four-finger rings were on some next shit. Surely, nobody was referring to any of it as ?old school? back then. Reason I mention this is cause I?ve been listening to a lot of emo from the ?90s lately ( Jawbreaker , Sunny Day Real Estate , Texas is the Reason , etc.). [...]
I apologize for the quick update today; I got a few things going on that I need to take care of. However it’s just for today and possibly tomorrow. Just hold tight and things will return to normal shortly. I imagine that a lot of people my age or even a bit older probably got wrapped up with How It Feels to be Something On when it came out in 1998. It’s often considered THE Sunny Day Real

This blog has moved - Update Your Bookmarks and Links. It's been ten years since Jeremy Enigk released his first solo album, "Return of the Frog Queen", so to say among fans of Enigk that the release of "World Waits" in two weeks is highly anticipated would be an understatement. The album has been gaining some very positive buzz due to the quality of the released tracks and the some great early reviews, but it seems that the album still has a biggest significance to long time fans [...]
We're super busy today , but I am pleased to report that my computer should be working again (I haven't tried it yet, so I can't say for sure ), so we should be back to posting fancy remixes and advance tracks and the like any day now. Hooray! My mom sent this to me the other day, she found it on El Chuco , a blog that features street art in my hometown of El Paso -- it's Marty Robbins performing "El Paso." And below that, another El Paso [...]

I'll be honest, I haven't followed or paid much attention to Jeremy Enigk since post-Sunny Day Real Estate. I never listened to The Fire Theft or Jeremy's first solo album Return of the Frog Queen. So basically everything i'm hearing from him now, including this new solo album (first in 10 years) World Waits is completely new to me. I'll also be one to tell you that you don't have to be emo

In honour of his upcoming show at the El Mocambo, I've decided to share some of my favourite Jeremy Enigk songs. The former Sunny Day Real Estate and The Fire Theft frontman is expected to release his second solo album later this year, and judging from the two new songs posted on his MySpace page, it's unlikely to dissapoint. >>>> Jeremy Enigk Abegail Anne from 1996's Return of the Frog Queen [...]
