Sunny Sweeney's Concrete (Big Machine) is a multi-influential combination of vulnerability and swagger. The Texan native started out as a member of a comedy troupe in New York City and along the way was encouraged to embrace singing. The album is well-stocked with listenable, fun songs revealing Sweeney's persohality and penchant for dark humor. She's got the Gretchen Wilson it-is-what-it-is-and-tonight-I -don't-give-a-damn persona out in full force. Sweeney's expressive voice has a sweetness that can turn on its heel and take on a weary, jaded edge. On "Drink Myself Single Tonight" she launches into an amusing take [...]
That charmer singing about a broken heart in the above clip is one Sunny Sweeney, a resident of Longview (just a short jaunt east along I-20, past Miranda Lambert's Lindale and Eisley's Tyler). N... Spend any amount of time with Republic Nashville artist Sunny Sweeney , and you will be enchanted. Get this: a female country singer who loves traditional country music, has what she calls a "healthy obsession" with Merle Haggard, and unwinds by watching the Loretta Lynn biopic Coal Miners' Daughter. She even has a favorite line from the 1980 Oscar-winning film. "I love it where she says, 'Doo, you sound like a big ol' bear," she says. Just like Lynn with her 1960 single "I'm A Honky Tonk Girl," that she and husband Mooney travelled around [...]

Ginny's Little Longhorn Saloon, Austin Hey folks! Today's excellent post comes from longtime commenter, first-time guest-poster Dave D. (Not to be confused with my poker buddy Dave, who has posted here before ). Dave D. is a self-described honky-tonk addict who occasionally takes work in Nashville or Austin strictly to feed his honky-tonk addiction. So sit back and enjoy his take on the female side of the current honky-tonk scene in Texas: * * * * * Although country music radio these days [...]
The first thing I noticed about Sunny Sweeny was her East Texas accent. It reminded me a bit of Natalie Maines of the Dixie Chicks. I'm glad I didn't let my initial prejudice get in the way of listening to the whole album, though, as Sweeney puts out a compellingly sweet and swinging album of Texas-style honky tonk.
