You would think a "leading technology company" earned such a lofty claim through smart business practices. They probably synthesized commonly found elements into a new medicine, or cracked some DNA code that could stop babies from being born with superfluous toes. Whatever they did, it's got to be important enough to warrant the term "leading technology company." You wouldn't think such a lofty claim is earned by launching a new digital file format in the hopes of becoming more popular than MP3s. That would be stupid. BACH Technology thinks they can replace the MP3. Their new file includes [...]

Back when I was in high school, I had a friend named Sam who used to brag about his love of Nurse With Wound. Whenever he had one of their tapes in his Walkman, he'd hand me his headphones and wait for my reaction. All I heard when I put them on was what sounded like an torturous mix of TV test patterns and fingernails on a chalkboard. I couldn't imagine why anyone would want to listen to such noise. When I asked him what he enjoyed about it, he told me he found it "calming." He had ADD and, [...]
The notion of a remix album is a strange one. First of all, what purpose do they serve - to provide intriguing reinterpretations of their catalog, or to throw a bone to fans hungry for a new album? Secondly, are remixes to be judged on their own merits as songs, or do they need to [...]

Sunroof ! Cloudz --- James Ford Ah yes, the old "desert island discs" question. Mine always change (don't everyones?), and this time Shaun says I can only pick one. It's a tricky question. I was even considering a rant against the concept of the "album" and how it's excluded a great number of pricelessly perfect single songs from the critical pop music cannon… but heck, "desert island" questions are fun, and the absurd hypotheticals and ridiculous restrictions are [...]
Skullflower is a long-running band that include Matthew Bower - an extremely prolific musician from UK, who was also a member of such bands as Pure, Total and Hototogisu. Skullflower itself started out where some of his other projects ended in the late 80s. Musically, almost all of Bower's project share his regard for all kinds [...]

Thanks in part to Bob Dylan (well, not Bob Dylan himself, but one of his fansites), this website has shattered its single-day web traffic record. Right now it is on pace for almost 2,000 unique visitors, which is pretty impressive considering the highest previous single-day total was, like, 900 people. So, thanks a lot Bob Dylan, you overrated piece of shit! Your lyrics suck, man! RULES for uninitiated noobs : With roughly 100MB of webspace, I give birth to a weekly Mix Tape to be deposited on your iPods or Zunes or Kingklangs or whatever the [...]
I used to go bowling with my father a lot when I was younger. He is one of those forty-plus-year-olds who work a 9-5 job all week (most Saturdays, too) and then go bowling on Sunday mornings with friends. It's one of his few opportunities to do something human. When I was a youngster, a morning spent with my dad and his friends was a vacation. They talked dirty and smoked a lot of cigarettes. This was in the days when bowling alleys only allowed scoring by hand. As I sat and watched the old men bowl, playing with my [...]
Sometimes great ideas in rock are really simple. Here's a case in point: Sunroof!'s Bear Melt does little but slide between two chords, with a ringing electronic whine and squiggly electric guitar providing the texture, but it does it so well that there are no complaints here. Whether or not this is a noise rock take on the Jefferson Airplane song of the same title, I couldn't really say. Having listened to them both recently, I can see some similarities. Sunroof! is one of the many projects of Matthew Bower, who has been [...]

Photo credit: Soul Dirty Where in the first two instalments of this series the sky was illuminated with scorching psychedelic freak-outs, now we're gradually slowing things down and glide into more dark territory. Although we still start off with the frantic psychedelia of La Otracina, soon the music slows down with the more spaced out and hypnotic rock of Pharaoh Overlord and continues to gradually decelerate from there on. This part three acts as a bridge towards the next three instalments of the "Dark Stars in the Dazzling Sky" series in which [...]
As I write this, I'm watching Mike Lowell hit his second home-run against the Yankees in a hotly contested battle up in Boston. I had a good weekend, thanks for asking. There was socializing, drinking, seeing an old friend, and more. Oh yeah, and Obscure References is trying to put together a national tour. Well, I mean, we've done calculations. So far we contemplated an entire tour (or, as I called it, a "heist") where we pretend our gear was stolen every night (thus cutting down on our costs because we could drive our cars, and not have to rent [...]
