Admittedly, I'd rather be previewing a new disc by Wolf Parade than another Wolf Parade side project. Nothing against Dan Boeckner's Handsome Furs, or Spencer Krug's Sunset Rubdown, but I've yet to hear anything from their other bands that can match the wonderfully chaotic (yet surprisingly melodic) Wolf Parade. Sunset Rubdown's previous release, Shut Up I Am Dreaming, is lurking somewhere in my music library, still waiting for some attention. It never really caught on with me. With "Up On Your Leopard, Upon the End of Your Feral Days" I may have to re-evaluate my [...]
I wanted to sit down and write a review of the new Sunset Rubdown record - Random Spirit Lover - but I found it really hard to come up with the words. I really dig the record but I don't think this is the kind of record you can jump into after a few listens, especially when the record isn't due out until October. The record, on first pass, has some sonic explosions and some beautiful quirky moments, and I think by the time it's actually released, I'll find the words to describe it properly. [...]

Spencer Krug's vocals are distinguishable from about a mile away. And that's a good thing. Because in the first half minute or so of the upcoming album, Random Spirit Lover , you're captured by the familiar rich tone of Krug's vocals, and you're ready to dive right in. Am I saying the album is accessible? Absolutely. But then again, it really depends on what you've been listening to lately. 'The Mending of the Gown' has been going around the blogs the past couple days, [...]
So the new Sunset Rubdown album, Random Spirit Lover , leaked over the weekend. It's their first for new label Jagjaguwar and follow-up to Shut Up I Am Dreaming , which was far and away my favorite record of 2006. Frankly I didn't expect a new effort from the band so soon, but considering Spencer Krug's remarkable prolificacy it's anything but surprising. What is noteworthy, though, is the consistent quality he manages to maintain in every project; Spirit Lover is no exception. The album begins with "The Mending of the Gown," its [...]
Click below the trailer to watch full-length video... Bonnie Prince Billy "The Seedling" [Full Video] dir. by Aran Reo Mann The trailer for Bonnie Prince Billy's latest video is rated "R" for "coarse language and sexual situations." This could very well be a perfunctory detail meant to identify the clip as a preview, or perhaps placed against the red background it foreshadows the horror filminess of [...]
Sunset Rubdown's Random Spirit Lover has just proved that we were all wise to save a slot on our year-end list for it. Spencer's genius (though never in question) is reaffirmed in twelve tracks, this first being my immediate favorite. MP3: Sunset Rubdown - The Mending of the Gown Hearing this song ...

Do the individual members of Wolf Parade ever sleep? Whether they are working together, or in their multitude of splinter cells (such as Dan's Handsome Furs or Swan Lake or old Frog Eyes or...), you have to give it to them - these guys certainly live to make music. And this fact is reinforced when, while most of us patiently await the Parade's next full-length, lead singer & keyboardist Spencer Krug decides to slip a whole new Sunset Rubdown LP under the door. And their sound has never sounded more [...]

I'm a pretty big Wolf Parade fan, so when I got the latest (although a year old now) Sunset Rubdown album in the post I was puuuretty pleased. Sunset Rubdown is the side project of Wolf Parade vocalist/songwriter/keyboardis t Spencer Krugg, and has grown from a one-man experimental thing to a multi-album full band setup. Indeed their third LP Random Spirit Lover is on the way in October, which is pretty impressive considering Wolf Parade are still yet to announce another album! So how does it differ from WP? Well those wonderfully idiosyncratic vocals are still there, [...]
In addition to releasing their second LP, Random Spirit Lover , this fall, Sunset Rubdown now have some October tour dates as well. The sophomore album will be their Jagjaguwar debut, which Pitchfork has rumored to include a new version of "Winged/Wicked Things," a song previously available only through Daytrotter . Sunset Rubdown - Winged/Wicked Things (Daytrotter Session) Sunset Rubdown Dates 10/07/2007 Boston, MA - Middle East 10/08/2007 Brooklyn, NY - Music Hall of Williamsburg 10/09/2007 New York, NY [...]
The first track off Sunset Rubdown's rapidly-approaching new album, Random Spirit Lover, has surfaced in live form. It's pretty fantastic sounding. Thanks to Snakes Got a Blog and the Wolf Parade Forum. MP3: Sunset Rubdown - Mending of the Gown With "Mending of the Gown," Spencer gets all Carey Mercer on us, ...

2007 has proven to be an incredible year in the world of indie rock music as nearly every week has seen an amazing new release. I've probably bought more albums this year than any year well, maybe ever, and have seen some wonderful surprises ( Armchair Apocrypha , You, You're a History in Rust , Tears of the Valedictorian ), some expected delights ( We Were Dead Before the Ship Even Sank , All of a Sudden I Miss Everyone , Neon Bible , Boxer ), some mild disappointments ( Some Loud Thunder , [...]
It's been a strange week, full of biscuits and airports and shopping centres and swimming and cherry trees and realising that Irish television is rubbish, but Irish music is improving. Thanks to everyone who kept checking back. I have assembled a lot of music to go through, so here are two very happy-sad songs to start. That's not a contradiction, it's a fair description. Sad and happy the same way it is to go home after a long time, or settle back into a routine, or be in love with someone and discover that that's terrifying, or finding out what [...]

So I've been wondering what the good boys of Wolf Parade are up to of late since it's been all side projects of late (or is Wolf Parade a side project, I'm not quite sure at this point), from Spencer Krug's Sunset Rubdown to Dan Boeckner's Handsome Furs . (Not that I really mind, as I'm a fan across the board). Anyhow, looks like WP have some shows at the end of the summer (not anywhere near the west coast), with one new one added in Montreal due to popular demand. Hell, if you [...]
An Endless Free Supply by Molly Lambert I love the early Peter Green incarnation of Fleetwood Mac and the spouse swapping coke party it later became. They were basically the Abba of America in that regard. I also love Abba. Anyway “Then Play On” sounds a lot like Los Lobos at times. I also love Los Lobos. They had a song over the credits of The Sopranos the other day. Another impeccable choice from whoever their music supervisor is. Who do you think it [...]

Do you find yourself put off bands by the pettiest of things? Maybe it's the result of the hype, their hair, their outfits, an out of context quote, convoluted song titles or a media invented genre. Or it might be something as simple as their name. Take for example, Destroyer . A band I have actively avoided purely for the fact that I assumed they would be some ugly, thrashy, shouty, noisefest. An assumption based purely on their name. But as we all know, wwhen you assume, you make an ass out of [...]

A couple of the "bigger" indie bands have announced new releases - hurray! Is that a picture of a panda during a sunset? Why, I do believe so! Jagjaguwar will be releasing Sunset Rubdown 's new album Random Spirit Lover in October. The band will be doing a three to four week tour in October to support the album - find two new songs below. One is live and one is from Daytrotter . [...]

This is a community service announcement. In a marriage of perfect proportions Sunset Rubdown has signed with Jagjaguwar . My favourite artist (Spencer Krug for those wondering) and the best Indie label in the world. "Random Spirit Lover" is the title of the album due to be released in October which you can read about here . If you don't own 2006's "Shut Up I Am Dreaming" shame on you. It is music of another world. Well after hearing a few new songs through recent live performances this new record has the potential to be off [...]

It's a simple fact of life that Spoon are great. In a sane world every person would be humming their tunes all day long. Well by now you probably are aware that their new album "Ga Ga Ga Ga Ga" will drop in July on Merge Records . Well for your listening pleasure I have a new track from the album "The Ghost Of You Lingers". I think it's great, just an incessant piano with Britt's haunting vocals. A beautiful, mysterious sound. MP3: The Ghost of You Lingers [...]
