Not only do I have a cold, and that invincible drowsiness which comes with it, but being self fucking employed I can't even have a bloody skive! God dammit! I feel like Kevin the Teenager from the Fast Show, it's just so unfaaaaair! Anyhow, to explain myself, yes that really is an armoured dinosaur up there at the top of the page. I did a Google image search for 'heavy cold' and apart from a bewildering array of machetes, that image featured quite prominently. And it's an armoured fucking dinosaur for goodness' sake! More such mental (and rather [...]

Almost exactly 3 years ago I went for a run -- a normal run in my neighborhood, but my first run since softball ended that year and following a couple week break for recovery. My left knee had been in bad shape that summer, the worst since I resumed playing softball, still with the torn ACL that also afflicted my right knee but clearly with something else wrong, which had made it difficult to run all summer. I'd been running regularly despite the knee injuries for years, and had successfully completed six 5k races between 2004 and 2006, setting a [...]

Someone new on the Wolf Parade forums asked for Spencer's contact info, which led to a thread of people questioning his motives, because he didn't seem to know enough about Wolf Parade and Sunset Rubdown to be asking to get in touch with our savior Spencer -- he didn't know who Camilla was, for crying out loud! -- but then us indie hipsters (yes, I said "us") came to realize that the original poster was just a teenager, trying to send Spencer a 500-word essay he wrote titled "Why Spencer Krug is Awesome." And [...]

Sunset Rubdown - Three Colors (Daytrotter) I want a girl who's excitable and quits her job suddenly and bites my earlobe in public and lets me take pictures of her topless and calls me ' Dahlin ' and fucks up her haircut on purpose just to see if strangers on the street will say anything and has an obnoxious laugh which she unleashes without self-consciousness and never turns down a triple-dog dare and plays a few bars on every piano she sees and leaves notes in between the pages of library books and listens to Sunset [...]

Photography by Me ... Okay... before we begin, check this out, originally tumbled by drowse , of the dad from Everybody Hates Chris doing a collection of the most random Old Spice body wash commercials. They are back-to-back-to-etc-etc without a pause, giving them an even greater sense of randomness and WTFness! Awesomeness? Yes.... yes it is. Alright, the reason for the season, today's mixtape. This one's been brewing in my head ever since I first heard [...]
I'm losing the girl I love. It feels wretched, and sense-killing, a slowly increasing panic that's spreading in my head like a bacterial virus I have no control over. It feels like I've actually, physically got a hole in my chest. I keep checking to make sure I haven't. All I want right now are pitch-black bedrooms, nondescript sidestreets, and rain, rain galore, so much rain. I want to hide, and never try again. I want to, but of course I won't. Here's the only possible song, and even a video with cute dogs. [There is a video that cannot be displayed in [...]

This upcoming weekend brings two of my most anticipated events of the summer, Pitchfork Music Festival in Chicago and the opening of Inception . It's been exactly two years since Christopher Nolan's last opus, The Dark Knight (I remember because that's also the weekend I got married) and that is one of my favorites movies of all time. I've been trying to stay spoiler-free for this one (although I did read a couple of the all-out rave reviews it's been getting) but from what I [...]

Photograph by Meqo Sam Cecil It's really not Wolf Parade's fault. Five years ago, when the Canadian rock fetish was just getting sexy and every new act seemed to be named after some kind of Canis lupus, Apologies to the Queen Mary rocked our cores before lighting our own hearts on fire. With a debut album that stellar and a wave of hype washing across the continent, there really was nowhere else to go but down. While 2008's At Mount Zoomer may have been more of a commercial success, it [...]
The early 20002s avant-indie breakup song for walking alone. Great cover from the original Xiu Xiu .
This weekend we will be heading to Chicago for our third consecutive Pitchfork Music Festival in Union Park. There are so many reasons this fest is so great especially when compared to the other huge fests I've gone to in the past. Maybe one of the best parts of the fest is the ratio of big name acts to the small size of the festival grounds. There are only 3 stages at this fest, 2 of them being right next to one another, and a third just a 5 minute walk away. And [...]

Wolf Parade has created an album that will blow your mind; it will make you ask why so many other bands just don't get it these days. This piece of work will take you on a musical journey that you will wish would never end, and you will play it over and over again. You will tell your grand kids on how epic the album was and how these damn new rock stars can never create anything similar to it. Unfortunately, that is their first album. Their latest work comes very close though. The World Expo 1986 [...]
Expo 86 goes along way towards cementing the band's legacy as one of the better acts over the last five years. More like it: Live Review: Wolf Parade at Fillmore Live Review: Wolf Parade at Fillmore CD Review: "At Mount Zoomer" by Wolf Parade

Photo & subsequent "hipsterization" by me!!! Well.... I was looking forward to a long, hard bike ride today, but apparently Accuweather wasn't so "accu" after all as the afternoon thunderstorms hit at 8am, just as I arrived on my bike at Tuck's to ride. Nice. It's not the rain that bothers me, I love riding in the rain, but heavy wind with thunder & lightning, well, even I know when to say, "hmmm....... maybe we should wait a bit, eh?" One man's lost [...]

and medicate with sighs." sunset rubdown - stadiums and shrines II

There are two new songs out by Wolf Parade in advance of the late June release of Expo 86 . Why two songs? Well, because there are two songwriters. One is by Spencer Krug and the other is by Dan Boeckner. They both sound pretty good. It's only Wolf Parade's third full-length album. Of course, both of the lead guys are involved in side projects. Boeckner performs as Handsome Furs with his wife Alexei Perry and Krug heads Sunset Rubdown . What Did My Lover Say? (It Always Had to [...]

Awesome new stuff from Wolf Parade , the very talented lads who make up the meat of Sunset Rubdown and Handsome Furs among many others. Released into the wild wild webs these two tracks will get you amped for their third full length Expo 86 (check the cover above) and it's been a long time between drinks - no Duran Duran pun going here. I don't know if I've got more complicated since first here Queen Mary but these two feel a lot more accessible than what's come before, [...]

Following up his great 2009 record Dragonslayer with band Sunset Rubdown, Spencer Krug is now set to return with more trippy Mad Hatter-inspiring rock tunes, this time with Wold Parade. The band's new Expo 86 —named after the World's Fair held in Vancouver in 1986—is due out June 29th via Sub Pop. You can grab two new tracks from the album here: Wolf Parade - "Ghost Pressure" (from Expo 86 ) [...]
Two new tracks from Wolf Parade's upcoming third album, EXPO 86, made the internet rounds today. "Ghost Pressure", a thumping piece of electro-rock, and "What Did My Lover Say? (It Always Had to Go This Way)", a typical Krug triumph, are seamlessly furthering the hype for EXPO 86, which should be one of this summer's [...]
