I just heard that Minneapolis's own Radio K will be recording a live broadcast with one of my favorite Austin bands SUNSET this spring at the SXSW Music Conference in the band's hometown. I am not sure if Bill Baird's project is still under the radar, totally hyped, or last year's news. Regardless, they are good. They touch on influences from pretty much every decade since the 1960s but still sound remarkably fresh. In the same vein as Of Montreal (but sounding completely different) SUNSET produces experimental, art-pop that is still completely accessible to the unpretentious ear (i.e. [...]

Austin's own {{{Sunset}}} will be releasing a new 7" record next year on February 9th. It'll contain two songs, "Loveshines II" and "I'm Not a Perfect Person (Looks Like I Fucked Up Again)". It'll cost you $4, plus S&H, and is limited to only 500 copies. Pre-order it here . You can currently listen to the songs on {{{Sunset}}}'s Myspace . According to {{{Sunset}}}'s blog : "Loveshines II" was recorded live as a band, then we did a full live overdub. [...]
He may have created a brand new nomenclature given the rapidity of his floating array of monikers but it seems mister Baird has finally settled on Sunset (thankfully shorn of the brackets) and now there's nothing to distract us from the music he (and his band) makes. And when he hits the spot there's very little that can match him in indiedom, take this little beauty for example from Sunset's

Ahhhhhh yeah, it's weekend time, which for Noah Sanders just means that I won't have to go to work drunk on Sunday. There's a slew of good shows happening about town and I'm going to try to tap in to the deep parts of your grey matter to pick which ones I think you'd best like. Alright, bald-faced lie, these are the shows I might be attending and if you'd rather do something else, I think you're wrong, but entirely right in your choice to differ. FRIDAY [...]

Usually when we check for venues for shows we recommend for the week we don't check Creekside Lounge ( 707 E. 7th St. ). Great drink specials, good times but hardly any shows. But tonight they have a show definitely worth mentioning. On the bill are School Police, Reverse X Rays, {{{Sunset}}}, and Mellow Owl. Should be a good time, and it only costs $6. After over a week, my custom domain URL is finally working. YAY! Hopefully, my headache will go away now. Unfortunately, I won't get to enjoy it much today, since I do have to go back to work tomorrow. Ah, my lovely 2nd home aka the cubicle. I Love My Job by {{Sunset}}

Finally, a new post, plus a Taco. Yes. My busy work season is almost over and the holidays are approaching which I'm pretty happy about. I saw Stephen Malkmus & the Jicks last week in Lawrence, KS. Blitzen Trapper was the opening band. Great show and great company...you know who you are. I also ran my first marathon since my last post so I'm pretty much a bad ass now. And more importantly, Obama was elected into office which means America voted the right way and things are already happening (even before hes taken office). [...]

When the Austin-based Sound Team released their third and final album, Movie Monster , in 2006, the subsequent acclaim was mainly attributed to the group's ability to apply a wide range of styles onto one album without being overbearing or stylistically uncreative in their own right. With multiple styles from the serene psychedelia on the standout "No More Birthdays" to the infectious dance-rock on "TV Torso" coming into play, I found it fascinating how the group of siblings and high school friends were able to make an album that sounded so cohesive despite containing a wide variety of styles [...]

This week, we're setting suns, pushing squares, singing in french, and being bad kids. We're featuring some experimental pop from the Glowing City : the latest LP from the band Sunset. This is an extremely colorful set of pop songs, which allegedly feed into a song cycle conceived by the band's leader, Bill Baird. Most of these songs stand on their own, but it's interesting to see that they're a part of something greater. We've also got the intricate electronica of Squarepusher. His new LP is called Just a Souvenir and it's an [...]
Here's an interesting little recording project by the name of {{{Sunset}}}. They're based out of Texas and led by singer/songwriter Bill Baird. Baird's got a good ear for sound and he's surrounded himself with a platoon of talented musicians, too. Each song sounds like it has its own aura, and music's influences reach far and wide: Tom Waits, Brian Eno, Brian Wilson, Beck, British invasion, and psychedelic pop. These two songs come from the band's new LP, the Glowing City . And that's out now on the record label Autobus . For [...]

Wow, there's a ton of great stuff going on tonight around town, despite it being a dreary Monday. We're having a hard time trying to decide where we'll end up tonight. Will it be.... I've had this band in the pipeline since, jeez, it seems forever. It's actually strange to get to that point in your 'blogging career' - as it were - where you are receiving band tips on such a regular basis and in such quantity that opening your mailbox is simultaneously exciting and completely overwhelming. Ceci wrote about a Sunset song about a month ago (well, she didn't actually write about it per se, but it was in one of her Friday Five [...]

I was a little late jumping on ex-Sound Team singer Bill Baird's new project Sunset . Baird's buoyant psych-pop debut The Glowing City hasn't left my speakers all day, particularly the ebullient, twisted third track "The World Is Awaiting" which (nary a coincidence) reminds me of the closing track on Sound Team's debut Movie Monster , "Handful of Billions" » [MP3] Sunset - The World Is Awaiting [MP3] Sound Team - Handful of Billions [...]

So what does that make me? The hearsay. Freed has come through with a whole bunch of good recommendations in the past few weeks... namely The War On Drugs and Sunset , though I take full credit for The Lord Dog Bird - even if I'm generally embarrassed to claim it because the name is so ridiculous. He also pointed out Grouper , which may be sort of mellow/slowcore for me, but is still pretty smurfing good. I think I already covered The War On Drugs in this months mix, but [...]

Bill Baird is the brains behind Austin based band and recording project {{{SUNSET}}} . Formed in 2006 by Baird the band has already released two full length albums on Austin label Autobus; 2007's Bright Blue Dream and 2008's The Glowing City. Both albums are literally filled to the brim with psych and shoegaze pop brilliance. The band's music is sort of like an amalgamation of Beck, Bowie, Eno, The Flaming Lips tripped out on some Syd Barret era Pink Floyd. Currently on a white-hot creative streak, {{{SUNSET}}} [...]

I've come to the conclusion recently that that there are two general paths for music to take. One form is aimed at your conscious mind. This form is often lyric heavy, and goes for an immediate impact. Top 40 music Ala Britney Spears is an example of this type when it's done poorly. A well executed example is Tom Petty. It's hook laden, catchy and goes into 'repeat' mode in your head almost immediately. The other form is aimed at your unconscious mind. It may have melodies, or [...]

So I picked up The Glowing City a few weeks back. The best way I can describe it is spaced out electronic folk/pop...that sounds fairly accurate anyway. Wow, what good music. This is what's missing in lots of acts these days. Genuine, honest records from hard working musicians. These guys, Hailing from Austin, TX, are starting to get some attention in cyberspace which will hopefully mean they'll be in my area soon so I can check them out (Brad you lucky bastard, always around the good stuff). "A follow-up to this year's Bright Blue Dream [...]
