Monday - Verse Metrics kicked off the week with some Fresh Meat action Tuesday - there was a distinct lack of sessions this week, but thanks to my mate Tom we had this cracking live recording of Idlewild in Shetland Wednesday - the fabulous Lorraine McCauley was my 43rd entry into the Scots Way-Hay club Thursday - I had a live recording of Frightened Rabbit in San Francisco Friday - after a bit of a lull over the past few weeks, Friday Freebies was back with a [...]
Super Adventure Club As the perjury trial of Tommy and Gail Sheridan entered its second week at the High Court in Glasgow, the good folk at Armellodie had a cracking wee idea. They've decided that it might be fun to soundtrack the whole affair and celebrate the release of Super Adventure Club's 'Chalk Horror' (out on Monday) by giving away a free download of their track ' Tommy Sheridan '. Mitchell Museum Those fabulous 'Museum kids new single 'Tiger Heart Beat' is out this week, if you haven't already seen it make [...]
Monday - Skies Fell took on some Fresh Meat action Tuesday - Sexual Objects Session for Vic, plus our good friends over at Gerry Loves told us a bit more themselves as my 8th DIY label Wednesday - Zoobizaretta became the 35th entry into the coveted Scots Way-Hay club Thursday - there was a wee announcement of a special gig in November (more of that below). There was also a wee interview with the lovely folk at Instinctive Racoon [...]
So, whilst the first half of 2010 was relatively quiet on the live music front, August was absolute mayhem. And as the dust settles on another festival period, and we try to assess the physical and financial damage in a calm and orderly fashion, it doesn't look like things are slowing down on the gig radar. Which I'm rather pleased about. Monday 6 th September 2010: Miaoux Miaoux and Wounded Knee at Electric Circus . Bart's House . Sneaky [...]
I must be the last person in bloody Scotland to review this album, but I have never really clicked with Super Adventure Club particularly, so I suppose it was inevitable that I showed very little urgency when it came to really giving Avoid Zombies* a proper, attentive listen. It's reminded me, in a slightly by-the-bye sort of way, of the value of labels and collectives too. Armellodie Records seem to be on a bit of a roll at the moment, and the fact that these Edinburgh to Glasgow transplants were working with Al was definitely something [...]
I will be in Macclesfield at Unconvention, pretending to know what the fuck I am talking about when it comes to new music business models when you come to listen to this. I do get a shiny new pair of Converse, courtesy of the sponsors, which is cool. But above all, me, the chance to talk shit... well, it's just a match made in heaven isn't it. My Granddad lives in Manchester too, which is rather convenient, so on Sunday I will go round to his house and say hello. Who knows, it might even shunt [...]
And now for something completely different..... For those of a nervous disposition, this might well be the time to look away, as you are about to enter the weird and wonderful world of the Super Aventure Club a scuzzed up head fuck of a band. Yes they're on the same label as last weeks Scot Way-Hay'ers The Scottish Enlightenment, the similarities end there. Based in Glasgow, the trio have created a unique sound which is clearly differentiates them from pretty anything else that is coming out of Scotland at the moment. It is at this point that [...]
Launch nights, are they really like buses, na not really but alas we have two which have come up pretty quickly after one another. January is notoriously a pretty shitty month for gigs, everyone's skint and there's generally not much going on apart from Celtic Connections. This year might well buck this trend as there are not one but two cracking wee gigs lined up in the first couple of weeks of January. First up is the launch night for We Sink Ships Radio, at the 13th Note this Friday (08/01/10), which boasts a line up of [...]

All over the shop
I feel a bit hypocritical extolling the virtues of Record Store Day - the annual, global celebration of independent music shops which takes places this Saturday for the third year running. Most music lovers treat vinyl as hallowed slabs of black magic, yet I regard them as impractical eyesores; while hardcore fans spend their savings accumulating every morsel of their favourite band's back catalogue, I'm down to my last crate (of seven) in a decade-long mission to offload every CD in my possession. Indeed, the last time I felt any inclination to buy anything in a record shop [...]

Live in Edinburgh This Week - 20th April 2008
This week the Edinburgh gig scene gathers pace slowly, but by the end of the week it's going great guns, culminating in a weekend of Triptych splendour that will be the last of its kind. I think there's pretty much bugger all going on today and tomorrow, but Wednesday is busy and it just gets [...]
