Not being original with the title of the post, using the same one as the book , but it is an excellent description of today's subject and it can't be bettered. This is the first in a mini-series looking at great players that you never saw - and I'm starting from the top with a name that everybody will have heard of, even without witnessing him play. For you young whippersnappers the above image will be explained in a [...]

Back on Christmas Eve , I posted a song by Gorky's Zygotic Mynci that just-so-happened to be called "Christmas Eve" (timing!). That song's lyrics consist of just 13 (lovely) words, repeated once. Posting the song got me thinking about other fully-formed songs whose lyrics are also made up of just a couple words. After a quick perusal of my hard drive, here's what I came up with. Consistent with the theme of the mix, I'll say no more. Enjoy. 1) Silver Jews - Open Field 2) Suede - Feel [...]

Mr abb is right, this has been tougher than usual. I'm pleased we worked it out and even more pleased we've hit on a top four after extended negotiations more convoluted than the US healthcare wrangles and Copenhagen put together. Finally we can walk out to the armoured car in our blue UN flak jackets, shake hands, and pronounce the Big Four. A roadmap to tinnitus, essentially. But before that, my other top records, following angrybonbon's tremendous ten... 1 - Sweet Billy Pilgrim - Twice Born Men I promised a [...]

I have only to glance at Stereogum's post on the most anticipated albums of 2010 to be assured that next year will be better than 2009, when my most-visited album was the Stone Roses' reissue . [Heartfelt thanks again to the person who gifted me that; you know who you are.] That said, '09 had some high moments. There were a lot of albums to which I matriculated like comfort food — at so many moments, only hooks would do — and there were others that seemed to stalk me, especially the haunting, synth-addled Fever [...]
A list of the best albums of the decade as compiled by
Album #6: Dark Days/Light Years by Super Furry Animals While I do think that the Furries have been the second most consistent band of the past fifteen years or so, I must say I did enjoy their previous few records less than all that came before them. However, with this year's Dark Days/Light Years the Super Furry Animals completely restored my faith in their ability to create magnificent albums from start to finish. As always, SFA cover a lot of musical ground in very little space: compare the schizophrenic Crazy [...]
by Mike Mineo ------------------------------ ----------------- 10. Super Furry Animals - Dark Days/Light Years Try and think of a band that has released 10 albums over the past 13 years, all of them attaining acclaim and stylistic diversity in a uniquely identifiable manner. Maybe if Super Furry Animals existed a few decades ago a few contemporaries could have shared this [...]
What a decade, huh? This one's notable as having been spent entirely in NYC, and entirely of the digital age which changed the way everybody listened to music. (Maybe not my parents but everyone else.) We had more access to everything, and less to to spend with it. That said, there was no shortage of good music, though I don't think anything hit me quite as hard as the previous decade -- partly due to age, party due to aforementioned information overload. There's nothing from this year, as I feel it's too close to [...]
Album #12: It's Blitz by Yeah Yeah Yeahs At first I was a bit underwhelmed with It's Blitz . After the Is Is EP I thought the band might head back towards the rawer sound of their debut (still their favourite record of mine). Of course It's Blitz sounds nothing like Fever To Tell . After the initial disappointment the songs started to sink in and I realized that lead single Zero is actually one of the best things the band has ever done. The rest [...]

Below is a list of my favourite records of the last ten years. Ranking these albums was led by a) what the album means to me and b) how often I'd listen to it. Each and every one of these albums blew me away repeatedly at some time between the ages of 18 and 27. Each one has something special going for it, something magical that brings me back to it. For that I can only thank the creators of each. Without further ado, here are my favourite 50 albums from the decade. And remember, you can't be wrong if [...]
Filed under: The Hit List , UK Choosing 25 tracks that sum up all that was good in British music from the last decade was no mean feat. Thankfully the UK more than held its own on the world stage throughout the 2000s producing a diverse array of musical moments that are right up there with the legends of yesteryear. From start to finish this first decade in a new century of music saw UK artists producing some truly exceptional songs. From seasoned guitar abusers and the latest young bucks [...]

We'll be doing some house cleaning of our playlists and album reviews as we near year end. We've got a number of album reviews we've stored away and never finished. These are albums we felt merit a review, but just couldn't work them in the schedule. However, we don't want to miss out posting them before year end, because, at the least, they had some very choice cuts of them. By the way, we'll post a complete recap of our favorite albums before year end. [...]
Filed under: The Hit List , UK The album was dead, they tried to tell us this decade. Downloading and the microscopic attention span of music buyers meant there just wasn't a future in making albums like the days of old. People wanted hits, and they wanted them without the filler. Well, here's 20 home-grown reasons to disapprove the skeptics. From the Super Furry Animals to Portishead , Dizzee Rascal [...]

Alice was beginning to get very tired of sitting by her sister on the bank, and of having nothing to do: once or twice she had peeped into the book her sister was reading, but it had no pictures or conversations in it, "and what is the use of a book," thought Alice, "without pictures or conversations?" So she was considering, in her own mind (as well as she could, for the hot day made her feel very sleepy and stupid), whether the pleasure of making a daisy-chain would be worth the trouble of getting up and picking the [...]

First up, if you fancy a night on the tiles this Friday (the 27th), then why not head along to Pin Up Nights 6th Birthday Party at The Flying Duck. Where you can catch The Dirty Cuts , We're Only Afraid Of NYC , Mitchell Museum (really liking these guys) and Always, Me, Me, Me . With the added bonus of a special birthday edition fanzine and badge for the first 100 to arrive, plus a birthday party wouldn't be the same without cake (and er free toast?!). For further details [...]
