I sometimes wonder what people think of me when their only reference point is the 'Show. ( You'll note I've opted out of the phrase "this here blog". This isn't acccidental. Let's move along, eh? -Ed. ) One of my major fears is that people think my life is far more intriguing, more special, or just more than I can really deliver. Let me be the first to set the record straight: I am far from being amazing. I'm just another guy with an opinion, and sometimes I write about things [...]

* Superchunk : Unbelievable Things (7.0 mb) | Burn Last Sunday (7.0 mb) | Every Single Instinct (5.0 mb) From Indoor Living : Merge Records : MRG129 While my musical tastes usually run to the extremes, sometimes I just like to rock out to some super melodic, fuzzy, pop-y indie rock. And when that happens, Superchunk gets stuck in the CD player and doesn't come out for awhile. Started in Chapel Hill [...]

PBS has a long running show titled Austin City Limits , featuring live performances by musicians and they sometimes put on some of the bands I like. Last weekend, they played a combined show featuring Sufjan Stevens and Calexico . Sufjan's show was disappointing - they only showed four songs, none of which were among my favorites, and plus, he and all his bandmates were wearing butterfly wings. So it was a little unsettling. Calexico was a little better, but not that great. But I got [...]

Woah... all that Pavement is makin' me all 90's-nostalgic. Let The 90's Retro-trend Begin! One of the peaks of my 90's experience was seen the Pavement / Superchunk / My Bloody Valentine bill at The Ritz way back in '92. Here's some Superchunk: Download: "Mower" (mp3) (Sorry "Slack Motherfucker" seemed too obvious). Myspace page is here . Merge page is here . Wiki Wiki Wiki [...]

For the third of our Halloween themed monday morning b-sides, we turn to Superchunk and their take on the David Bowie classic "Scary Monsters." Do I really need to say anything about Superchunk? If you haven't heard of them already, you need to get out more. Or at least read their bio at the All Music Guide . Superchunk - "Scary Monsters" (mp3) The song is [...]
Don't you hate when you wait too long to listen to something and then end up berating yourself all day for procrastinating so long? That's how Phil Avalos and the Quiet Lanes made me feel today. I let them sit in my myspace friend requests for over two weeks before taking a listen. WOW. I gotta make more time in the future for bands that send friend requests, at least ones like Phil's. Their myspace name drops a motherload of indie rock bands that have influenced them (and countless others), Superchunk, Knapsack, GBV, Ted Leo, [...]
I'm way behind in posting my weekly Sirius radio playlists. The last one I posted was Week 8 . Here's the playlist from Week 11 (8/15/2006). On this show I played all music that came out on Merge Records , and all music that happens to be available in MP3 format... 1) Superchunk - Becoming a Speck 2) And You Will Know Us By The Trail of Dead - Mistakes and Regrets 3) Pipe - Chula 4) Dinosaur Jr. - Forget the [...]

I've had a lovely weekend "chillaxin" with friends & really doing a whole lot of nothing in particular, but it's exactly what I needed. However, this week will be crazy --> On Friday 8/11 I'm spinning at my totally fun monthly dance party: SHAKE SOME ACTION! @ THE ROYALE in Park Slope, Brooklyn. It's the best dance party in the BK -- DJBJ & I spin the ass shakers & you shake your ass! Always a good time, cheep drink specials, a dance floor & it's FREE! [...]
Special post alert! Over-affectionate Nausea Warning! Stop reading now if you can't stand public displays of digital affection. Today marks exactly 5 years since I left work as per our usual half-day Fridays and headed to the N train back to Brooklyn. On the way home however, I bumped -- literally -- into a girl who was delivering compost to the Union Square Green Market at that same instant.

Play it: Polvo - The Merge Years ('92-'95) Many of holes in the Merge back catalogue became Rhapvailable yesterday. Of note were nine Superchunk singles (containing about 8 songs not available on their three odds n' end compilations;) several great albums from Lambchop , The Radar Bros. and The Rose Buds ; and all the Merge works of Polvo , which for me, is the real prize here. Formed in Chapel [...]
The big show in town this weekend is the Independent Weekly 's Indy Music Awards . It starts at 6:00 p.m. Saturday (10/2) at the Cat's Cradle and Carrboro Arts Center . Maybe I'm a dope, but I can't actually find a performance schedule anywhere. In any case, here's a selection of some of the local artists nominated for the first ever Indy Music Awards (and wouldn't you be dying for that pig statue?!?): The Rosebuds : " Kicks in the Schoolyard " from Make Out [...]
