There's certain go-to visuals that each genre of music is notorious to returning to time and time again. For rappers, it's gorgeous women shaking what their mommas gave them. For those metal gods of the world, it's Satan. And now we at CoS have discovered the tried and true video concept for indie rockers: cats. While Best Coast went for the lolz , veteran indie rockers Superchunk have decided to tackle a question that has plagued mankind for eons with the video for Majesty Shredding 's [...]

I have a long-running fear that every cat I see is just waiting for the right moment to kill me, so this video of a cat mugging people, getting lit up on cheap alcohol, punching people in the balls, and straight thumping on people is basically my worst nightmare. But luckily the video is for "Crossed Wires," one of the better tracks on Superchunk's masterful comeback album, Majesty Shredding. Great song: Terrifying video. Majesty Shredding is out now.

Bruce Peninsula By rights, we should have seen a new record from Toronto's Bruce Peninsula ages ago. Their 2009 debut A Mountain Is A Mouth seemed a long time in coming from when the choral gospel-blues-folk collective began dropping jaws with their live shows, but after its release the band was everywhere and it seemed there was no slowing the momentum behind them. But life, as it is wont to do, threw a curveball and in late 2010, after their second album had been recorded and they [...]

Have you ever wondered what your cat does when you aren't around? Yeah, me neither. I don't even have a cat! Anyway, Superchunk's new video for "Crossed Wires," from last year's acclaimed Majesty Shredding , uncovers the secret life of the house cat... and it's not pretty. If you think robbing Jon Wurster is bad, well, you ain't seen nothing yet. Also, I have never thought to arm wrestle a bartender, but now I have a goal for Friday night. Check out the video for "Crossed Wires" below. [...]

In about 63 hours, I'll be throwin' some 'bows at Ear X-Tacy to make sure I get my hands on every Record Store Day release I need. Of course, "need" is hardly the proper term, but when you're standing there holding the last copy of a Japanese Les Savy Fav import on coke bottle clear and orange swirl vinyl - well, that's when "need" is the right word. With that in mind, here is my list of RSD desirables. In looking through the list, there were some entries I logically knew I [...]

Documentary: It's a lofty goal to try and answer the question "What is Indie Rock?" and capture the whole of the late 802s to early 902s scene before the great music blog plague that is upon us now. Indie rock splintered pretty much as soon as it was born into all sorts of sub-genres. ...We had paper zines back then to rely on and the internets was not accessible to everyone - it was a discreet affair. Sure in there were music scene curators like epitonic who were listening, and many amazing [...]
Superchunk - Like A Fool Buy US:

Toronto - After The Mountain Goats played their first song, I heard a fan behind me shouting out for "Going To Georgia." Seriously? Shouting out requests at a concert is a dubious activity at the best of times, but this was a demonstration of some serious overexuberance and/or impatience. Not to mention a serious misjudgement of how good John Darnielle's hearing was. Still, his enthusiasm could be forgiven, seeing as how The Mountain Goats had not been through town since 2007. Despite the long gap between visits, Darnielle and co. made a great impression on the packed crowd. They entered to [...]

howdy! man i actually i had like 3 posts planned for today, but yours truly is a dumbass. now, this is good and bad, well not bad just merely an annoyance for me. i was attempting to use fireftp, which is a great firefox extension, apparently i put the password in incorrectly, and after three attempts it bans the ip that is trying to access my server. great to know this actually works, but sucks when the guilty party is the person who actually runs the site. still may get at least one more up, but until then here is [...]

Do you like music? Well this one is a call to action. A temporal mix that hopefully reads more timeless than momentary. A sort of "Music Now!" demand in line with the standout Frightened Rabbit track off their Sings The Greys debut. I always seem to end up with a bunch of late 60s tracks, and the ones on this mix seem to be especially central to the overall gesture. Almost as a challenge to myself after having an argument with a friend on the quality of 80s music, and realizing how few products of the [...]

Superchunk and Coliseum will team up for a limited edition 7-inch split for Record Store Day. The split will feature each band's take on a classic Misfits song.

Record Store Day exclusive split release from Coliseum and Superchunk (who crafted two of our favorite records last year) featuring their covers of the Misfits which both surfaced last year around Halloween. Coliseum takes on "Bullet" and Superchunk covers "Horror Business". This is one of our top pieces of vinyl we will be hunting for on RSD 2011. Mp3: Superchunk - Horror Business Coliseum - Bullet

by BBG Art for the Superchunk/Coliseum split Now that Coliseum has given their epic Goddamage EP a revamp (a must, if you don't have it already), the band is currently tearing up the streets of the EU with Rise Against . After returning from that trek, Ryan Patterson & the boys will hit the US highways/byways for a string of US dates that will include NYC twice: May 14th [...]

Bright Eyes @ Radio City Music Hall, March 9 Words : Jeffrey Greenblatt Images : Jeremy Gordon It's hard to believe that it has been four years since Conor Oberst last recorded under his longtime moniker Bright Eyes , an eternity for a guy that is known for his prolific output. Since the 2007 release of Cassadaga , Oberst has stayed busy by releasing two "solo" albums of breezy, folk-rock with the Mystic Valley Band along with his contributions to the Monsters Of Folk - a [...]
![[Live in Boston] Covers from Superchunk, Rival Schools, + Wild Flag](http://cdn.elbo.ws/posts/3279778_lg.jpg)
Sharing a few live cover songs, all recently performed here in the Boston, on this gray Sunday afternoon... First, a song from late in Superchunk 's set at the Royale back in September. This one was both a gift for aging fans of early Boston hardcore in the crowd and maybe a quick, minute-long lesson for some who weren't even born when SS Decontrol was putting out records almost 30 (!) years ago. Featuring rare lead shouting [...]
