Filed under: Concerts and Tours , News Next Monday will mark the 30-year anniversary of R.E.M. 's first-ever live gig at a dilapidated Athens, Ga. church. In honor of that event, a number of that city's luminaries -- including Cindy Wilson of the B-52s , producer John Keane and members of Pylon and the Squalls -- plus special guest Mitch Easter, who produced 'Chronic Town,' 'Murmur' and 'Reckoning,' will perform covers from the band's catalog this Friday, April 2, at the Melting Point in an event titled "R.E.M. One common dilemma faced here on Musical Pairings is that we receive submissions and otherwise discover music by a lot of talented artists and musicians that we'd love to promote, but whose album we haven't yet found an appropriate Musical Pairing. For this reason, we're starting a new semi-regular post here on Musical Pairings featuring some of the new music that we have received, but have yet had a chance to use as a Musical Pairing or Local Pairing. ~~ Tim Williams ' new album is the first featuring the [...]

Supercluster may have that famed super group make-up, but it lacks in the pretentious ego-driven in-fighting to which such groups are prone. The artists behind Supercluster are responsible for some of today's best groups, from Of Montreal and Casper & The Cookies to Deerhunter and The New Sound Of Numbers. Despite the who's-who of indie pop, Waves is a portal into lo-fi psych pop famed to regions like Athens, GA. Also unlike the typical super group, Supercluster lacks overproduction thanks to the hand of Jason NeSmith (Casper [...]

After quite a long absence, the Graboid is back and this time around with a proper title. As much as I liked the original 'The Daily Graboid' title, in the grand scheme of things it just never really made much sense considering it had always been a weekly post. I've always meant to have the change eventually, but considering how long it's been since I've last put this up, it just felt right to start back anew with this different title. So with that being said, you can expect to see this every Tuesday since I [...]

Editor's Note: Usually, I use Sundays to rant and rave about just about anything and I'm just as likely to discuss broad topics about music as I am my cat or wrangling at Home Depot. I've been fairly off the radar for the last couple of weeks while Brian, Rob, James, and Justin have been covering the album review duties superbly. Rob's debut review of The Ettes earlier this week was solid and we're glad to have him on board. Justin's finally getting over his Canadian hangover and Brian has officially shaken the flu. Wrap all of this together with [...]

Athens' "Appalachian Wave" crew Supercluster is a bone-fide Georgian super-group that ebbs and flows in size like any community and features members of Pylon, the Olivia Tremor Control, Circulatory System, Instruments, Casper & The Cookies, Deerhunter, etc. Their new album Waves follows 2007's Special 5 EP and includes some of the last material recorded by Pylon's Randy Bewley, who passed away earlier this year . Accordingly, Pylon friend and fan Bradford Cox jumped in to play guitar and help with production. As far as this particular track, "Brave Tree," vocalist/keyboardist/producer/ Pylon member Vanessa Briscoe [...]
![Randy Bewley, R.I.P. [Obituaries]](http://cdn.elbo.ws/posts/1557649_lg.jpg)
At 5 p.m. yesterday, Pylon guitarist Randall "Randy" Bewley passed away, and my beloved hometown of Athens is a lot poorer for it. Randy contributed to our town in multiple ways, as a member of a legendary band, as an elementary school art teacher, and as a father of two, an all-around great guy by all accounts. To call him a unique talent would be an understatement. I will put this in as delicate manner as possible: Randy Bewley was not a good "traditional" guitar player. He was not the guy you'd call [...]
(Photo courtesy of Cable and Tweed.) After a short dinner break, the festivities at Little Kings started up again with a treat. Side-project Supercluster , which boasts an impressive lineup of musicians: Randy Bewley (Pylon) Vanessa Briscoe Hay (Pylon) Bill David (Jolly Beggars) John Fernandes (everyone) Bob Hay (Jolly Beggars) Hannah Jones (Sound Houses) Kay Stanton (Casper and the Cookies) This semi-acoustic set was a welcome change from earlier bands that day, with Bob on acoustic, Bill on mandolin, and John on violin.
