Joe writes: Anyone Can Play Guitar, a film by Jon Spira, is possibly the definitive document of a local music scene, with all its passion, small-mindedness, resentment, jealousy, good fortune, ill fortune, stupidity... and some truly great music. Ed O'Brien and Colin Greenwood from Radiohead, one of the biggest and best bands in the world, appear alongside people who are unknown in the wider world, but were legends in a world of their own creation - the Oxford music scene. The film's thesis is [...]

Anyone Can Play Guitar By Kenny McMurtrie November 29, 2011 When was the last time Mark Gardener was asked to turn it down by an annoyed old biddy? Probably not for many a year yet that's what happened here tonight. Mid-way through his short semi-acoustic set a sinister silver-haired figure was seen to scurry in through the street door of the bar and engage the bar staff in animated conversation and two songs later it was all over. Fair enough - Midnight wasn't far off and [...]
The first in a new series looking back at classic Britpop albums investigates Supergrass's million-selling debut album.
HBO's hit series How To Make It In America had the it's Season 2 finale last night and it was a great one. It good not have ended any better. With that came some awesome music as well. I am disappointed that the season is over but am happy with the overall result of everything. Below [...]

Colin Greenwood , do Radiohead , Nicolas Godin , [...]

Photo courtesy of Cité de la Musique's Flickr The Velvet Underground's 1967 debut album The Velvet Underground & Nico is a massively important album, a 2006 addition to the Library of Congress' National Recording Registry and the No. 5 album on our list the 100 Greatest Albums of All Time . As such, an album of its groundbreaking magnitude deserves only the most elite of collaborators for a tribute concert, which it got during last month's The Velvet Underground Revisited concert in Paris. Featuring Radiohead's [...]

Feist & Friends Cover Velvet Underground Live Earlier last month, Radiohead's Colin Greenwood, the HotRats (aka Nigel Godrich with Gaz Coombes and Danny Goffey of Supergrass), Soap&Skin, and Air's Nicolas Godin, teamed up for a one-off tribute to the Velvet Underground in Paris, aptly titled Velvet Underground Revisited. The set was comprised almost entirely of covers off VU's Andy Warhol-produced 1967 record with Nico, including a faithful take on "Femme Fatale" that featured a guest lead vocal by Leslie Feist. You can take a break from [...]
"Tiny Fingers" is lush and exotic, with sounds of broken sitars, brass, and wind chimes backing a gentle acoustic strum. Like everything on Red Velvet Snow Ball, it would be the perfect accompaniment to a day of greenery – lying in the green grass, staring at the green trees swaying above you, and perhaps indulging in something that would make the sky appear green.

The Bullitts via Pink Floyd, David Bowie, and Supergrass link up w Mr. Badu for psych-r&b (did we really just take it there) jam that sounds not quite like anything you've likely heard before (except those above bands). The Bullitts - Run & Hide (Feat. Jay Electronica) The Bullitts ( Official ) ( Twitter ) Rating 8.3

When you're taking a look ahead to where popular music might be going it sometimes helps to understand where it's come from. This way you can begin to recognise patterns and influences as they appear. The difficult trick for any modern magpies is to successfully blend the old ideas with some new ones. The future of music isn't decided by those that attack the past, pillaging it of it's best bits, re-packaging it and then re-selling it to innocent punters. Regurgitating a Michelin starred meal will not a chef make you. There's plenty of admirable examples of this [...]

You may recall that a couple of months back we hit you with our love for Supergrass ' 2005 record, Road To Rouen . Well, that love certainly hasn't ceased, and as such, has left us scouring the internet for more material from the era of that album. Lucky us, the band was in top form in a live environ, and we stumbled upon three tracks from the record on YouTube. Two recorded at Ronnie Scott's, "Roxy" and "Low C", and one recorded at Somerset House, "Low C", [...]

Being billed as the UK's answer to Kings of Leon immediately lumps a rather large weight on the shoulders of London trio Them Changes. But nevertheless, that seems to be the word about town. Not bad for an act that started its life as Michael Kiwanuka's backing band. They eventually decided to form their own [...]

So as I started writing this blurb for Mini Mansions' (a band I had heard of in passing but not really digged into yet) track for "Monk", I was thinking... "UK band Mini Mansions sound like Supergrass" (or something like that.) So I go to look up what town English town these Mansions blokes are from and lo and behold, suprise surprise, they're actually from L.A. AND is fronted by Queens of the Stone Age bassist Michael Shuman. That's a pretty nice pedigree. "Monk" is a great tune, somewhere between the dusty blues-inspired sounds of 60's bands like The Zombies [...]

Every now and again, a record comes along that defies the catalog of its creator. It presents a new sound, or an old sound in a new light. Most importantly, it takes that artist to a new level, because it exposes depth in their work that had previously been absent or unknown. When we were driving from Dallas to New Orleans with an old friend, Road To Rouen was dropped in the CD player, and that's exactly what happened. The record takes the rock and roll prowess of Supergrass , and veils it [...]
Who's Medi? Since I just found out, let me tell you! He is basically the French equivalent of Matt Costa mixed with Daniel Merriweather and with a dash of Jamiroquai here and there. Expect to hear a mix of soul, 702s inspired funk, and smooth rock. His debut album You Got Me (Moving) comes to us after ten years of music [...]
