In my ongoing effort to understand virtually everything, this week's target was woman. Since up until now my knowledge had consisted chiefly of, "they smell different and probably have non-penis genitalia, although let's not be so sure" this is a big step for me. To understand the female mind, I first turned to Molly, but she knows very little about women despite being one. When I have to learn about feminism, I'll fax her a request, but until then, she's more ginger than woman. This led me to Paige Parker, a dating guru for women [...]
In the most embarrassing quasi hip-hop news since the K-Fed search engine , 7-year-old Floridian Bobby Tedesco choked on, then swallowed, a $10 set of grillz his mom bought for him at their local flea market. What's worse? Doctors think he'll have to get 'em out the old fashioned way. Here's an X-Ray . If mom had splurged on a pair of those custom Paul Wall chompers this would've never come to ... pass. Or, as one witty All Hip Hop reader retorts: "Gives a new [...]

Home again, home again, jiggety jig. I had a fantastic loooong stretch in California this past week+. In addition to seeing two unbeatable concerts and witnessing a cousin get married off in a burst of winery festivities , I also got to see lots of old friends, swim in a bonafide swimmin' hole up in the Sierra Nevada mountains, chat up an old neighbor we call Larry Woodstove and find out the haps in the 'hood I grew up in , eat my favorite gelato twice and In 'N' Out three times, [...]
I went to see an 11:15am showing of The Simpsons Movie at the Arclight today, and I guess I'm going to take a few minutes to write about it, even though nobody cares what I have to say. The crowd's excitement was quite palpable. The girl sitting to my immediate left was actually taking pictures of the crowd before the previews began. The usher who welcomed everyone to the theater kept screaming "Eighteen years!" and harping on how long the wait has been, so would you please turn your cell phones off for the betterment of the long-awaited [...]

Hi all and welcome to the new music blog created by me Dazzler and a bunch of other muso folk who should hopefully show you some light in the foggy musical wilderness. I wanted my first post to be a testiment of why I wanted to have a music blog so I have decided to pick my current hometown (Oxford) and some of the bands of Oxford that have changed me in some way. Fell City Girl are one of the sad stories of Oxford, for four years this four-piece-epic-rock-anthem-a- thon band created some of the greatest nights of [...]

I've just emerged from moving hell. Mostly unscathed but thoroughly digusted with my gluttony when it comes to clothes & shoes. I'm too embarrassed to go into too much detail regarding this issue but suffice it to say I'm hitting the resale shops hardcore this weekend to try to unload some of this bad retail therapy. My new apartment is really cute though. Once I unpack everything & get it put away, it's going to be adorable. But right now, it is an ongoing project that seems like it will never be done. [...]

Song, by Toad is quite squarely, it appears, the bitch around Toad Hall these days. Now, I do a perfectly respectable professional job, in a perfectly acceptably lazy, half-arsed way and when I got my grand-and-a-half payrise last year I was, if not thrilled, not irritated either. Thing is, Mrs Toad's bonus has just been announced and it is comfortably more than my entire annual wage. Given, as The Hold Steady have already categorically proven with copious scientific research, that "guys go for looks, girls go for status" it does sometimes cross the mind [...]
Για σήμερα χαλαρά κομμάτια για να πάμε και να γυρίσουμε με το καλό The Pogues - Sayonara * Damien Rice - Dancing With Tears In My Eyes (Cover Ultravox) | Σίγουρα είναι ο Damo ? Johnny Cash - A Boy Named Sue (Live@Folsom Prisons) Dixie Chicks - Not [...]
The best thing about the previous decades is that over time, the dust has settled and a select few are crowned as the best. Now either this is yet to happen for the 90s or the talent was a lot more spread, because looking at my list of must-include bands, I'm gonna need at least 4 episodes. This also isn't helped by need to categorize my episodes, thus including bands that may not be must-includes yet fit perfectly into a category, such as in this week. It is a celebration of Britpop – where a new brand of music (really [...]
After all this mellifluvium - yes, I know, but it's my word and I'm sticking to it - I thought I'd cut loose and produce some more raucous, feel-good music in advance of the weekend. We have a couple of beers with our lunch here on Fridays and it always nudges me into the weekend in the best possible mood, so why not share the joy around the information super-cul-de-sac, I thought. So, the story of my life in seven songs. Why seven? Why not, ten seemed a lot and five a little few, so [...]

You can help as well! Details on the protest below the accompanying story. Dozens of top British bands and musicians today joined forces to oppose the multi-billion pound replacement of the Trident nuclear weapons system. A statement was issued on their behalf, warning that ordering a new generation of nuclear weapons would make the world a more dangerous place. Signatories included Thom Yorke, Damon Albarn, Razorlight, Snow Patrol, Bloc Party, Franz Ferdinand, Super Furry Animals and Supergrass. The statement said: "If Britain says it needs nuclear weapons for its security, other countries are likely to follow [...]
PopMatters has a divine article trying to pin down those varied vocalizations that singers have been throwing in the midst of their songs since time memoriam. Maybe James Brown is the best-known for his off-the-wall hollers, but read about the rest. Here are some snippets from the extremely well-written and entertaining article, as author Zeth Lundy takes you through the different species of yowl
Ok this is really exciting and also very important...Its that time of year again for " Neiles Life Year End Lists " A list of top albums and songs of 2006...Why so early?? Because I did my list for 2005 around this time last year. Actually it was November 24 of last year that I did my favourite albums of 2005...I believe its the best time to do these lists. A) Cause there isn`t a lot of good albums that come out in December anyway, except for those BullShit albums that the major labels push on us [...]

Dear Friends, what shame has befallen our family! We are now outlaws, doomed to live the rest of our days with the Mark of Cain upon our foreheads... Let me explain. The other day Dearest Father-In-Law set off in his motorcar. He turned right out of his street onto a divided highway (that's a dual carriageway for those of you in the UK and Ireland), proceeded west to the next intersection, then did a u-turn to head east on the other side of the median strip. Alas, this was an illegal maneuver, and there happened to [...]

SUPERGRASS - I Should CoCo Jul 18, 1995 Capitol One of the wonderful bands to come out of the whole Britpop 90`s thing..It was the song "Alright" (Feat. in commercials and some movies) that made me a fan of Supergrass waaay back in the day.. Supergrass - Caught By The Fuzz Supergrass -Alright [...]

Loch Fyne, Scotland, Easter 2005 Dear Friends, it has been an odd day. And it all centers around changes. Some made me happy, others saddened me, all reminded me of the transient nature of things. I was going to make a binary list here: good news and bad news. Upon reflection I decided, however, that I really shouldn't be judging them in that way. Things happen, and the trick is to greet them when they do and reflect on what it is one is supposed to learn from them. Even the uncomfortable ones. [...]

Sometimes it's nice to come back to music that's familiar to you. I've been listening to so much new music lately that I think i needed a nice break this weekend. So i decided to stay up all night and make a little mix, and as you can see it's very Britpop influenced. Eh, who am I kidding it's completely Britpop. There's stuff here from bands who aren't exactly british but I still consider it Britpop anyways. At one point this is all I would ever listen to, a [...]

Play it: The New Adventures of Jesus This week, The Onion AV Club put together a fabulous mixtape of songs that use the second coming as a starting point (sort of.) ZZ Top's (13-bar blues) "Jesus Just Left Chicago" is the obvious launching point in this endeaver ("took a jog through Missippi, muddy water turned to wine," but it bobs and weaves through modern interpretations and ireverent "what if's." It ends with a plea from a heroin addict ( [...]
